During Lent ( from 13th March) there will be a Compline service at Fleet on Wednesday evenings 7.30 p.m.

5 Dear friends and colleagues,

This letter comes with my prayers for us all as we enter the holy season of Lent. I hope that it will be a time of reflection, of re- newal and of profound preparation for the joyful festival of East- er.

Bishop Christopher has asked me to help with diocesan prepara- tions for the enactment of the resolution by which the will leave the European Union, and this is the reason for me writing to you today.

The United Kingdom is set to leave the European Union at 11pm on Friday March 29th. As yet, significant votes still have to take place in Parliament, but whatever the outcome of these votes I would like to share with you the request from our archbishop and bishop, that as God’s people in Greater we should commit ourselves to prayer at this time, and to being good neigh- bours to everyone.

It is likely that the national church will produce some easily adaptable resources that might assist us in what I know is already a considerable pastoral challenge. As soon as these resources be- come available, I will send you the necessary links and details.

In essence, the hope is that church buildings might be open for prayer and that the communities that they serve might be invited to gather to pray together and, where possible, to offer hospitality such as a cup of tea and a chance to talk. It is felt that many dif- ferent feelings are likely to be unlocked towards the end of March, and that one of the things that we can do as Christians is to recognise our neighbours’ different needs – and our own – and take very simple steps to meet them. We are planning an oppor- tunity to pray together as a diocese at St Botolph’s Church in Boston at 6.00pm on Saturday 30th March.

6 This letter is not seeking to overburden those who I know are al- ready busy and committed in so many different ways. Rather, it is to try to say ‘here we are, as God’s people, all of us, together, try- ing to be true to him and to those whom he loves and has made in his image’. My sense is that whatever our personal views of the politics relating to Brexit, we can find common ground in the pas- toral issues that are emerging.

It is likely that this prayer will be being used nationally and I offer it to you now, as a first step in making other resources and infor- mation available to you:

God of hope, in these times of change and uncertainty, unite our nation and guide our leaders with your wisdom. Give us courage to overcome our fears, and help us to build a future in which all may prosper and share: through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

With best wishes,

The Right Reverend Dr Nicholas Chamberlain

Bishop of

10 Belfry News Last Saturday, March 2nd, I was invited to a four tower outing in North West Leicestershire, Swepstone, Appleby Magna, Orton-on-the Hill and Sheepy Magna. As I have mentioned previously, one of the pleasures of bellringing is visiting towers. Each are different, the churches, the bells, the villages which one would never visit were it not for that campanological interest. Organised by the Tower Captain at Ibstock, the day included an excellent lunch at the "Unicorn", Orton-on-the Hill, where during the usual lively conversation, the subject of recruitment was mooted. One or two of the ancients such as myself, with looks of nostalgia, recalled the days of the 1950's when young lads and girls were keen to take up ringing. Some of those girls were very pretty and it was not unknown for Tower Captains to specifically teach them in order to attract young lads to their towers. Unfortunately those days went long ago and nowadays it is difficult to find recruits, young or old. With us today was, however, Lawrence, a fifteen year old and someone enquired "Tell me Lawrence, what inspired you to take up ringing". "Well", he replied, "I saw that TV advert about the Mars Bars and decided to have a go" Readers may remember three monk like figures having trouble ringing their bells but on wolfing down a Mars Bar each they virtually went through the roof.

Oh well, good luck to Lawrence and let us hope he keeps up with his ringing. Life in the 1950's was different, far simpler than that of today. When Colin Walker, a ringing friend of my youth died in 2005 I wrote to Mary, his wife and she replied. She said, "It seems a life time ago since the days of bellringing in the 1950's. They were happy days when we were all content with simpler pleasures". True words indeed but times change and we should endeavour to face the future with confidence. Can I interest any- one in learning to ring?.

Pastor Ross A Dean Phone: 01406 424556

‘I alone know the plans I have for you, plans to bring prosperity and not disaster; plans to bring about a future full of hope.’ Jer.29 v.11.

These words of the prophet Jeremiah from God to the Israelites, living as captives of King Nebuchadnezzar in Babylonia during the 7th/6th century BC, were to en- courage them in their hope of an eventual return to their homeland. Until that day should come, the prophet advised them to make the most of their life in exile – settle down, establish themselves, work for their own good and that of their communities in which they lived. In this way they would be preparing themselves for their even- tual return to their homeland.

In the early months of this new year, there is much that we as individuals and as communities can do to prepare ourselves for better times, as we work through our present difficulties. In doing so, we must keep our eyes fixed firmly on the Lord, because his promise in Jeremiah 29:11 still holds good for us today.

As a fellowship we are conscious of those in need of our prayers, as they cope with various illnesses or age-related handicaps and difficulties. We are pleased to report that our pastor, Ross, is slowly recovering from his recent period of ill health and we pray that he will soon be fully recovered.

Several comments were received about it being a delicious meal. The April lunch will be held on Wednesday 10th April at 12.00 for 12.30. Please let Jill (01406 365586) or Jane (01406 363673) know if you would like to book a place. THANK YOU A huge thank you to the hardy souls who attended the Churchyard tidy on a very windy Saturday morning. Lots was done under quite difficult conditions. Let’s hope for better weather next time! Thank you also to everyone who has offered to help out with prayers, read- ings etc. during the interregnum. It is much appreciated. At the time of writing David Smith is recovering from his spell in hospital and we wish him a speedy return to full health. GEDNEY CHURCH SPRING CLEAN A Church spring clean has been planned for Wednesday 3rd April starting at 09.30 am. If you are able to come along bringing brushes and dusters that would be great. A good spring clean during Lent means the Church is spick and span for Easter. We shall conclude our cleaning with a light lunch of soup and rolls as a small thank you to everyone involved. Please come and join us if you can - wear your old clothes and wrap up warm – it could still be quite cold.
