MARY MAGDALENE: A MISUNDERSTOOD BIOGRAPHY – ‘Six Men & Six Women’ Series You know if you are feeling tired this morning, you should really appreciate the crew who were here at 8:00 this morning. If I have ever been teaching and felt like I needed to inject an audience with something, I just witnessed it. I mean they were tired, but they were troopers for coming out and being a part of the early service. I know that you guys are excited today because it is one of those days where we will just break our New Year commitments as we begin to go off the deep end. I mean we will be eating really well today, since it is Easter, and now we are hosed. It just goes awry from here on. So I hope you have a good Easter Sunday with good fellowship. And I hope that this morning you will sense something from God’s word that you can take away from the message that will be an encouragement to you. Let me start off with a story. Several years ago, I was serving as an associate pastor in Conway, Arkansas at Celebration Church. It was a new church, and I was there on staff. I came in one Sunday morning, and I saw my bride getting a cup of coffee. So I went up behind her and began to give her a massage on her shoulders. But then she turned around, and lo and behold, it wasn’t my wife! I was horrified in that moment. What made it even worse was she was a first time guest to our church and I never saw that lady again. -

Isaiah declares that the light of the long-promised king will illumine the world and bring endless peace and justice. Paul reminds us that the grace of God through Jesus Christ brings salvation to all people. The angels declare that Jesus’ birth is good and joyful news for everyone, including lowly shepherds. Filled with the light that shines in our lives, we go forth to share the light of Christ with the whole world. PRELUDE GREETINGS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God, Love from the beginning, Word made flesh, Breath of heaven. Amen. Let us confess our sinfulness before God and one another, trusting in God’s endless mercy and love. Merciful God, we confess that we are not perfect. We have said and done things we regret. We have tried to earn your redeeming grace, while denying it to others. We have resisted your call to be your voice in the world. -

Series: The Gospel of Mark "Calming the Storm" # 16 Mark 4:35-41 4-30-17 Sun AM Our hearts have been stirred by 5 revival messages, now its time to get back to the teaching of God's Word to equip and mature saints. The miracle in this passage is not having Jesus in your boat of life and everything will be okay. This passage is about the Creator working in our lives. Two background thoughts- 1. The teaching of Jesus. “The same day” (v. 35) refers to the day on which Jesus gave the “parables of the kingdom” (4:3-24). He had been teaching His disciples the Word and now He would give them a practical test to see how much they had really learned. The hearing of God’s Word is intended to produce faith and faith must always be tested. It is not enough for us merely to learn a lesson or be able to repeat a teaching. We must also be able to practice that lesson by faith, and that is one reason why God permits trials to come to our lives. 2. The miracles of Jesus. Jesus performed miracles to display his power over creation, demons, diseases, and death. This miracles in our text is another opportunity in which the supernatural power of Jesus was displayed. The disciples knew of His divine power yet they were not fully prepared for his display of omnipotence over his creation. TT- Jesus leads the Disciples into a storm as a test of faith and we learn two simple truths about storms. -

North Bethesda Contact United Methodist Church May 2017 Volume 46, Issue 5 6:30 AM Easter Sunrise Service Thirty-eight folks arrived for a lovely sunrise service. Ken Ow used a recording of a trumpet playing “Christ the Lord is Risen Today” on his phone, then amplified it through his bullhorn! Pastor Jeff started with the greeting and service. Karina Mobley did a superb job as the “Child of the Resurrection,” recounting her views of Palm Sunday, Good Friday, and Easter morning. Valerie Blane, as Mary, Jesus’ mother, told listeners highlights of Jesus’ life and the fulfillment of God’s promise with the resurrection. The delightfully yummy breakfast featured Natalie McManus’ famous egg casserole, Mark’s muffins and pastries, Virginia’s selection of cut fruits and special dip, as well as tea, coffee, and juice. Thanks to Ed Swanson for taking care of the chairs. Valerie Blane 10:00 AM Easter Morning Worship Service A joyous Easter celebration started with Tony’s trumpet piece on the organ, followed by bells on the organ. Truly, one could almost see the bell ringers! The altar was full of beautiful flowers and fragrant scents. A fresh, bright white drape hung from the cross. People wore smiles. Some children wore hats! (Do you remember back in the day when all females wore new hats for Easter?) The choir sang Randall Thompson’s “Alleluia,” an incredibly glorious piece, whose harmonies are intricately woven into insistent praise and thanksgiving. Liturgist Merlyn Vemury read the Easter story. Pastor Jeff gave a sermon on the empty tomb. We took a moment to bless Jennifer Fellows who left for a solo trip to Utah to visit her mother. -

WISH YOU HAPPY FEAST OF EPIPHANY Receiving than Giving: The most foundational truth of the Christian life can be located in today’s gospel of the Epiphany. when we focus on the wise men, the theme of the gospel is about searching, finding, and the giving of gifts. These themes, however, are not the deepest truth of today’s feast. To find that truth we must not look at what the wise men do, but at what Jesus does. And what does Jesus do? He receives the gifts that the wise men offer. This action is arguably the first action of Jesus ever recorded in the gospels: to accept the gifts that are given. Our faith is not primarily about what we do, but rather about what God does. God has made us and saved us. God’s actions are the actions that are at the heart of the gospel. Being a Christian is not about what we do, but what we accept; it is not about giving but about receiving. So what is it that we are called to receive? The three gifts help here—gold, frankincense, myrrh—value, mystery, pain. The first gift is the gift of gold, a gift of great value and worth. It points to the value and worth of our own lives. We are persons of great worth. God has made us so. God has instilled in us a dignity that is a part of who we are. That dignity is nothing we can earn and nothing that we can lose by failure or sin. -

A Very Special Child Luke 2:22-24; Luke 2:25-32; Luke 2:36-40 December 30, 2018 – First Sunday in Christmastide Luke 2:22-24 - The Dedication of Jesus Friends, our reading for today, from the second chapter of Luke are often overlooked by the church. In fact, they are not included in the Common Ecumenical Lectionary, that list of suggested scriptures for all Christian Churches to follow. But I believe these are wonderfully special readings. Our first reading sets the stage. We’re told that Mary and Joseph took the baby to the Jerusalem temple for their purification, as was prescribed by Jewish law. There are those who would claim that Luke is a “Gentile gospel,” that Luke was a Gentile; and the Gospel was written for Gentiles. Perhaps those who would claim that have never read the second chapter; and the emphasis on Jewish law and the emphasis on the redemption of Jerusalem. So what is the Jewish law to which Luke refers? It’s from the twelfth chapter of Leviticus. You may have noticed that Luke states, “The time had come from their purification.” Two things will happen at the temple somewhat simultaneously. First, Mary will undergo a ritual purification after childbirth; and second, Jesus will be dedicated to the Lord, as the scripture says: “Every firstborn male shall be designated as holy to the Lord.” Now there’s a key point here. Leviticus says the mother should give a lamb for the dedication and a young pigeon or turtledove for her purification; but, if the woman cannot afford a lamb, she can offer two pigeons or turtledoves instead. -

The Last Supper Seen Six Ways By Louis Inturrisi The New York Times, March 23, 1997 When I was 9 years old, I painted the Last Supper. I did it on the dining room table at our home in Connecticut on Saturday afternoon while my mother ironed clothes and hummed along with the Texaco. Metropolitan Operative radio broadcast. It took me three months to paint the Last Supper, but when I finished and hung it on my mother's bedroom wall, she assured me .it looked just like Leonardo da Vinci's painting. It was supposed to. You can't go very wrong with a paint-by-numbers picture, and even though I didn't always stay within the lines and sometimes got the colors wrong, the experience left me with a profound respect for Leonardo's achievement and a lingering attachment to the genre. So last year, when the Florence Tourist Bureau published a list of frescoes of the Last Supper that are open to the public, I was immediately on their track. I had seen several of them, but never in sequence. During the Middle Ages the ultima cena—the final supper Christ shared with His disciples before His arrest and crucifixion—was part of any fresco cycle that told His life story. But in the 15th century the Last Supper began to appear independently, especially in the refectories, or dining halls, of the convents and monasteries of the religious orders founded during the Middle Ages.
