Hilal Alkan is a researcher at Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient, Berlin. She primarily works on migration and care with a particu- lar focus on gender. As an activist in Turkey, she has worked on gendered peace building and prospects of transitional justice mechanisms. Her most recent publications include “The gift of hospitality: (un)welcoming Syrian migrants in Turkey” (2021) and “Syrian Migration and Logics of Alterity in an Istanbul Neighbourhood” (2020). She has edited Urban Neighbourhood Forma- tions: Boundaries, Narrations, Intimacies (with Nazan Maksudyan, Routledge, 2020) and Politics of the Female Body in Contem- porary Turkey: Reproduction, Maternity, Sexuality (with Ayşe Dayı, Sezin Topçu and Betül Yarar, I.B. Heike Liebau is a Senior Research Fellow at ZMO, Berlin where she currently coordinates the research field Representations of the Past as a Mobilizing Force. She heads the ZMO team of the DFG-funded long-term project Das Moderne Indien in Deutschen Archiven (MIDA) and is co-editor of the Archival Reflexicon, and Thematic Resources, two open-access publications within the MIDA Research Portal. https://www.projekt-mida.de/rechercheportal/. Her research and writing broadly focus on aspects of the social and cultural history of colonial India, 18th to 20th centuries, with special interest in biographical studies and the history of knowledge production. The series ZMO Programmatic Texts publishes wider conceptual articles engaging with the interdiscipli- nary and inter-regional research conducted at ZMO. The series provides a platform for authors to pres- ent and discuss original and innovative contributions to current theoretical and comparative debates, in relation to ZMO’s programmatic research agenda. The Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient (ZMO) is the only German research institute devoted to an interdisciplinary and com- parative study of the Middle East, Africa, South, Southeast and Central Asia from a historical perspective. Current research focuses on the interaction between predominantly Muslim societies and their relations with non-Muslim neighbours. ZMO was founded in 1996 as one of six university-independent, non-profit research centres for research in the humanities.
