    DIOCESE OF CHELMSFORD DIOCESAN SYNOD Minutes of the 146th meeting of the Synod held on Saturday 17 November 2018 at the Chelmsford Cathedral PRESENT : The President and 119 Members The Synod began with the Eucharist. During this time the Revd Canon Louise Williams led the Synod in an act of reflection. Members were asked to write down their hopes for the next three years and bring them to the front as an offering. During the opening worship the Bishop of Chelmsford delivered his Presidential Address. It was noted that filming would take place during the Synod meeting and if members had a concern with this they were invited to submit these via email. The results of the elections to the Bishop’s Council were noted. The new Bishop’s Council took office from the date of this meeting. The consultation on the proposed National Clergy Covenant was highlighted and members were encouraged to engage in this. 5. MINISTRY TO REFUGEES The Chair suspended standing orders and invited the Bishop of Barking, the Revd Gareth Jones (Diocesan Refugee Coordinator) Eddie Campbell and Chris Springett (Essex Integration) to address the Synod.

    Great Bromley Letter to America, December 2017 Dear Susanne and all our friends in America and beyond, Another year has absolutely flown by! St George’s has seen many visitors from America, some visiting for the second or third time. It gives me such great pleasure to meet such lovely people who make time in their busy holiday schedules to visit Great Bromley in the depths of Essex. At least seven Stone family visitors from all over America visited in 2017. (According to the Visitors’ Book there have been even more.) I have met them at Colchester or Manningtree Railway Stations or some even hired a car and drove themselves to Great Bromley. Here are the visitors I met this year: May David and Lisa Revell Stone Oregon David Cutting and his sister Oregon Jane Stone Curtis June Cheryl Stone Pervier Watertown July Kurt and Rosemary Johnson Oregon Brian de Rosier (Brian’s second visit to St George’s!) Connecticut September Gail and Louis Pucci All our visitors seem in awe of our beautiful church; they love the Stone window, as we do, as well as the double hammerbeam roof, and are always keen to make donations towards the upkeep of our church so that future generations can enjoy the building. The Society for the Preservation of Ancient Churches Inc was formed for this purpose by Ben Stone and it has promised support in the coming year. We are in turn awe-struck by such generosity and are extremely grateful for your kindness and support. The good news at the end of 2017 is that all the legal documents and licensing are complete for the new local parishes’ structure.

Maybe that's a good thing; maybe now we are turning to you with a realization that we need you so much more and that our lives are not in our own Cycle of Prayer control. Let us not forget all of those around the world who are frightened at this moment. Help those who are victims of terrorism and war.     GS Misc 1081 GENERAL SYNOD CLERGY DISCIPLINE COMMISSION ANNUAL REPORT FOR 2013 This report is made in fulfilment of the duty placed upon the Clergy Discipline Commission by section 3(3)(c) of the Clergy Discipline Measure 2003 to make an annual report to the General Synod, through the House of Bishops, on the exercise of its functions during the previous year. This is the tenth annual report made by the Commission and covers its work in the year to 31st December 2013. The House of Bishops received this report in May 2014. MEMBERSHIP 1. The Clergy Discipline Commission (“the Commission”) is constituted under section 3 of the Clergy Discipline Measure 2003 (“the Measure”), which provides for the appointment by the Appointments Committee of a Commission of not more than twelve persons, to include at least two from each House of the General Synod and at least two with legal qualifications specified in the Measure.1 The Chair and Deputy Chair of the Commission are appointed by the Appointments Committee from amongst the legally qualified members after consultation with the Dean of the Arches and Auditor. 2. During the course of 2013, two members stood down from the Commission. The Revd Alastair Cutting (Chichester), who sat as a member of the House of Clergy, was appointed Archdeacon of Lewisham & Greenwich with effect from April 2013, and so relinquished his place in Synod and therefore his seat on the Commission. The Rt Revd Christopher Hill, Bishop of Guildford, retired in November 2013, and so also stood down. At the end of 2013 the terms of office of Lord Justice Mummery, His Honour John Bullimore, the Venerable Annette Cooper, Mr Niall Blackie, the Revd Canon Cynthia Dowdle and Mr Michael Sayers came to an end.

    Friday 2nd May 2014 NEW BISHOP OF COLCHESTER SAYS THESE ARE EXCITING TIMES FOR THE CHURCH The Venerable Roger Morris, Archdeacon of Worcester, has been nominated by Her Majesty the Queen as the new Bishop of Colchester in succession to The Rt Revd Christopher Morgan. Roger Morris said: “I am really thrilled to have been asked to come and serve the churches and people of this wonderfully varied part of Essex. Everyone I’ve met has been incredibly warm and friendly and generous – so much so that they have made coming here feel a lot like coming home. “These are exciting times for the Church as we live out and celebrate our faith in new, engaging and transformative ways. This is a time in which we are called to re-imagine a vision for the church in the 21st Century which is authentic and relevant and helps us become all we are called to be. “As Bishop, I believe that it is important to make a priority of being available, being approachable and being known. Bishops are often talked about as being shepherds and Pope Francis talks of the importance of the shepherd ‘smelling of the sheep’. That means spending time with and knowing and identifying with the people we are privileged to serve. Although 65% of the population identified themselves as Christian in the 2011 Census, we need to make better connections. Developing a Fresh Expression of Church is an attempt to do something completely new that would give children and families spiritual and practical support in a way in which they would feel completely comfortable. Within the parish are six primary and one secondary schools, four pre-schools, a Child Contact Centre, a variety of uniformed organisations and Korban, a house for the care and support of homeless teenagers (see www.korban.org.uk) housed in St Anne’s Vicarage.

    Serving with Accountability The ‘Transforming Presence’ vision makes spirituality and evangelism two clear priorities in the life of the church, along with the need to re-imagine ministry. However there needs to be some means whereby this is joined together. How do we serve with accountability? Is there a set of ingredients that constitute a faithful healthy Christian community? Is there a set of ministries and activities that we should expect to find in every Christian community, whatever its context and circumstance, and about which we should hold ourselves accountable? And in what ways can Archdeacons help the parishes to develop the mission and ministry of the local church? In Acts 2:42–47, we read “They met constantly to hear the apostles teach, and to share the common life, to break bread and to pray. A sense of awe was everywhere, and many marvels and signs were brought about through the apostles. All whose faith had drawn them together held everything in common: they would sell their property and possessions and make a general distribution as the need of each required. With one mind they kept up their daily attendance at the temple, and, breaking bread in private houses, shared their meals with unaffected joy, as they praised God and enjoyed the favour of the whole people. And day by day the Lord added to their number those whom he was saving.” This is a community which is faithful to Christ. It is a community that is growing as the Lord adds more people to its number. It is a life of clarity, integrity and mutual accountability.
