In the Beginning In the days when only the American Indian inhabited the territory we know today as “Michigan,” explorers from Europe were actively seeking new lands for their mother countries. Two French explorers, Brulé and Grenoble (sometimes spelled “Grenolle”), were the first Europeans to cast eyes on the great Lake Superior around 1622, and were determined from that first moment to claim this new land for France.
