From January to August 2020, ISIS caused 292 incidents taking place mainly in Diyala, followed by Anbar, Kirkuk, Salah al-Din, Mosul, Erbil, and Baghdad, which experienced fewer incidents compared to other provinces. ISIS increased its operations with the start of the COVID-19 Pandemic. During April and May 2020, the number of ISIS-caused incidents reached 86, increasing by over threefold compared to previous months. Moreover, other reasons for the increased ISIS attacks were the reduction of activities and missions of the coalition forces in Iraq, and their handout of control to the local security forces, in addition to the withdrawal of coalition forces' troops as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic, which further mobilized ISIS operations during the period.
This situation report entails data summary of ISIS-related explosive hazard incidents necessary for the humanitarian actors to plan and prioritize their prompt responses to the affected areas and communities.
