  • Thames Ward Community Project Reaching Communities
THAMES WARD COMMUNITY PROJECT REACHING COMMUNITIES JULY 2017 Vision Thames Ward Community Project (TWCP) aims to build social cohesion within a deprived and fractured community, and to ensure that the massive social and physical upheaval that will transform this part of east London offers new opportunities for the local community. The project will bring together schools, community groups and residents from across Thames ward, over a period of three years, to develop initiatives that will improve the environment, achieve better health and quality of life for residents, increase their skills and job opportunities and ensure that they have a strong voice and can influence change in the area over the next decade. By year three, the project will have established a resident-led Community Development Trust to continue this work into the future and to ensure that the initiatives that emerge over the next three years are sustainable. Context The development programme on Barking Riverside is set to double the ward population over the next ten years. It is attracting new investment from developers and national programmes that could benefit the whole community. However, to date, there has been no significant investment in community development and, without a clear strategy to engage the whole community, there is a danger that the changes will not benefit the older, established community and might exacerbate divisions rather than bring people together. TWCP will employ skilled community organisers to ensure that residents (in the older estates as well as the new properties) benefit from new opportunities arising from Barking Riverside, and also support them in developing the sense of ownership and control that is needed to build a more resourceful, inclusive and forward looking community.

Three located archaeological features, deposits and finds that date from the Roman, Saxon, medieval and post-medieval periods. A possible Saxon ditch was found. A deposit model based on borehole logs, previous archaeological excavations, evaluation trenching and cartographic study identified a geological discontinuity with alluvium to the west and north of the site and glacial tills to the east and south-east. Finds include Roman and medieval brick and tile, Saxon, medieval and post-medieval pottery, animal bone and worked timber. The evaluation trenching has provided further evidence for Saxon and medieval activity associated with Barking Abbey. Location and reference of archive: The archive is presently held at Thames Valley Archaeological Services, Reading and will be deposited at The Museum of London in due course, with accession code ABR14.

Samples were obtained from the main River Thames, tributaries, standing waters and the London Docks. The samples were examined for Total Coliforms and Escherichia coli to give a measure of faecal contamination. The results were compared with the standards given in E.C. Directive 76/I6O/EEC (Concerning the quality of bathing water). In general, coliform levels in river waters were higher than those in standing waters. At present, there are three EC Designated bathing areas in the River Thames catchment, none of which are situated on freshwaters. Compliance data calculated in this report is intended for comparison with the EC Directive only and is not statutory. Most sites sampled complied at least intermittently with the E.C. Imperative levels for both Total Coliforms and E.coli.

The Essex Birdwatching Society Newsletter The Natural Home of Bird Recording and Birdwatching in Essex since 1949 October 2020 Issue 45 Dear Essex Birders With chillier mornings and cooler days, we are very much in autumn now and many of our summer migrants will be replaced by autumn and winter migrants in the coming weeks. We were hoping to launch the Big County Birdwatch around now but with recent Covid restrictions we have had to adapt this years effort so we will now have THE BIG COUNTY GARDEN BIRDWATCH running from Friday 2nd - Monday 5th October 2020. I hope to send details of this great event in the next week or so.... watch this space! Best wishes to all. Steve IMPORTANT INFORMATION Due to the new law which came into force on Monday 14th Sept 2020 regarding the number of people (Maximum of 6) that are legally permitted to meet in a social gathering, it is with regret that all EBwS field trips planned for 2020 have had to be cancelled. However, there were Green and Common Sandpipers to see and a Wood Sandpiper showed well on the 15th. Down on the river there were still Avocets and a few Black-tailed Godwits and a single Bar-tailed on the 1st. The immature Spoonbill was seen all month and a Cattle Egret arrived on the 7th and briefly became five on the 19th.
