Weekly Tech Tip: Editing PDF documents for free using PDFescape.com April 5, 2013 Every now and then I need to edit a pdf file. The only problem is that Adobe Acrobat is expensive. I would rather not spend $119 (education price) for software that I only use once in a while. Enter PDFescape.com. PDFescape is web-based software that will allow you to edit pdf files for free. Follow these instructions to edit a pdf file using PDFescape.com 1. Using a browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Chrome, or Opera) navigate to http://www.pdfescape.com 2. Click the Edit Your PDF Now button. You do not need to create an account. Jared Campbell • [email protected] • 321-674-7738 Page 1 3. Click the Upload PDF to PDFescape button. Don’t worry about the Upgrade to Premium button, unless you would like to use their file storage service or not see advertisements. 4. Click the Choose File button that displays then navigate to the pdf document you wish to edit. Next, click the upload button. 5. On the upper left of the screen you will find three tabs which contain different toolboxes: Insert, Annotate, and Page. By default, the Insert tool is selected. Jared Campbell • [email protected] • 321-674-7738 Page 2 6. The Insert toolbox: a. Text – the Text tool will allow you create a text box anywhere on the document. This lets you add text to your document. Select this tool and then click and drag on the screen to create an area for text. i. Notice that you are given some options above the document for simple editing of the text. Note: You are only given 4 fonts to work with: Arial, Courier New, Times New Roman, and Verdana. ii. Select the font size, style and color for your text. iii. Type the text you wish to add to the document. b. Image – You can add images (bmp, gif, jpg, jpeg, and png) to your pdf by clicking the Image button. I do not know what size limitations there are for these files – experiment! i. After clicking the Image button, you will be asked to upload an image. Select the Choose File button and then upload the file you wish to add. ii. Click and drag to place your picture wherever you like in the document. You may move it around and resize it as needed. To move it around, click and drag the picture to the location of your liking. To resize it, click and drag on a corner. Pro-tip: holding down the shift key while resizing will let you resize the image without changing the height/width proportions. iii. To delete the picture, while it’s selected, press the delete key on your keyboard. iv. Note: until you click another tool, every time you click the screen you will place another instance of the picture on the document. Jared Campbell • [email protected] • 321-674-7738 Page 3 c. Link – You can add a clickable link region to your pdf file. i. Click the Link button then click and drag on the document in the location that you would like the link to be. Note: This will create a clickable region rather than a text link. ii. Type in the link location in the properties box that displays. You can link to a URL or a page in the document. d. Whiteout – Select this tool to click and drag a white box in the document. If you would like to delete the white box, click to select it, then hit the delete key on the keyboard. Jared Campbell • [email protected] • 321-674-7738 Page 4 e. Freehand – Select this tool to click and drag a freeform ink line where ever you like on the document. f. Form Field – Use this tool to click and drag a fillable field on the document. This will allow people to type on the document after you save it. g. Extra Tools: Click the More button to find the line, Arrow, Rectangle, Circle and Checkmark tool. These are graphic items that you can place on your document. 7. The Annotate toolbox: a. The Annotate toolbox gives you the option to add a sticky note comment to your pdf as well as add highlighting. i. Note: Sticky Note is a toggle switch. When you are done creating sticky notes, be sure to un-toggle it. This will keep you from adding a bunch of unintended sticky notes. The Page toolbox: b. The Page tool box gives you options to move, delete, rotate, append and crop pages. i. The Move tool will allow you to move a page to another location in the document. Jared Campbell • [email protected] • 321-674-7738 Page 5 ii. The Delete tool will let you delete a page in your document. iii. The Rotate Left/Right tool will allow you to rotate an entire page. iv. The Append button will allow you to join pdf documents together. To use this tool you will have to upload the pdf document you would like to append to your file. v. The Crop tool allows you to crop a page in your document. Click and drag on the document to crop the particular page to a definite size. 8. When you are finished editing your pdf document click the green Save and Download arrow. This will start the download right away. 9. Open your freshly edited pdf file and enjoy the fresh edits!
