Public works has a lot to offer, and if you can turn the few negative opinions into positive experiences, I would have to say that it is a gratifying field to work in. I can only speak for the division to which I am assigned, but being an engineer in public works allows me the option to do just about anything from roadway design to maintenance work on a park shelter. I definitely never run out of stimulating projects that give me pride in my work and, ultimately, in my life.

now because I’m female, but because I do a good job. Still, I remain sensitive to inequities both real and perceived. Young females entering the profession today may have significantly better legal protections from discrimination, but we all know it still occurs. We owe it to our female colleagues—and our male co-workers too— to recognize it, eliminate it, and educate those involved. Start by respecting ALL colleagues. They will prove their worth or not by their actions and accomplishments, which is a much more reliable way to develop assumptions about capabilities.

Now 20 years after accepting that first City job, I’ve had no regrets. I’ve also never been bored, under-worked, or un- challenged! I still look forward to the day when working in a “gender blind” office doesn’t mean you have to act like “one of the guys.” And I look for opportunities to encourage young women to consider careers in engineering, and point out the need for them in the public works arena.

that there are always multiple solutions/ approaches to projects and our team has constructive discussions to come up with a design or construction technique that best fits the situation. The range of experience and personalities that exists within my work division makes us a strong team.

During my time as municipal engineer, I have recruited to replace each leader of my four workgroups (design, construction, traffic, and GIS) due to a promotion, restructuring, a resignation, and a retirement. As most employers are encountering (at least in the Midwest), recruitment is a challenge due to a shortage of applicants for most positions. Recruiting the right fit for the team is an equal challenge. The City of Ames is continually adapting our recruiting methods and interviewing processes to overcome some of these challenges.

I am currently a senior civil engineer in the transportation division of the public works department. I have been with the City since 2004, and my focus is in traffic signal timing. It was once written about me that “I decide when drivers in Tempe stop and when they go.” It may sound pretty simplistic, but I must continue to balance the competing interests of businesses, pedestrians, bicyclists, drivers, bus transit and public officials.

I enjoy working in this industry very much and look forward to what the future has to hold. Our community is becoming very close to finishing our light rail project, which will bring a whole new dynamic of traffic control to my plate. The challenge will be very welcomed and rewarding to bring about.

Some things have definitely changed over the years. Competition is great for the top jobs at this time. System security and technology play a big role in how public works operates today. It’s a different but exciting game, but the same opportunities exist if we are willing to be “at the top of our game,” and learn from those who have gone before us, with integrity and drive, to lead the way for all women to pursue their career dreams. We hire the most qualified individuals regardless of gender, race or sexual orientation. professional public works organizations no longer wonder, behind closed doors, “Can a woman do the job”? There are fine examples of women in all aspects of public works. All we need to do is look around us, walk to the next office, go out to a construction project, or find a maintenance crew. Women are here and we are here to stay. 97
