therton’s Ivan Jensen has been declared the inaugural RedStar Annual Award winner for 2013. Ivan’s Aachievements over the past 12 months have been duly recognised.

The Champ had a wonderful year winning 12 junior titles. It all began when Ivan won two titles at the Ingham qualifier. Next stop was the Mackay qualifier for another 2 titles before embarking on his biggest challenge, taking on all comers at the Australian Junior Open Championships in Sydney. It was NORTHERN REGION there that Ivan won his first National title. RED STAR Another couple of double titles in Townsville and Mackay SQUASH AWARDS before winning the Queensland State Title for U15.

All was looking great for a perfect year but despite reaching the final of the Australian Junior Championship, Ivan had to settle for silver in his match up with NSW’s Todd Riches.

A few days in the Teams competition Ivan avenged that loss to Riches and led the U15 Boys to a great team victory.

It was back home before heading to the first qualifier for 2014 in Ingham where Ivan bagged another 2 titles to get 2014 off to a good start.

he Queensland Sharks is the name of the Queensland Junior Squash Team which represents the State at the Australian Junior Team Championships each Tyear. The Decade of Dominance began in 2004 when the mighty Queenslanders finally broke the reign of NSW which had stretched for 11 successive years. Canberra was the happy hunting ground in 2004 and it was only fitting that it was again where the team posted their 10th victory in succession.

The NR star of the decade was without doubt Atherton's Dijo Sexton. Dijo played 7 straight AJC team championships and captained the team at her last appearance in 2010. During that 7 year period Dijo lost just one match in AJC team competition. Dijo played 31 matches for the Sharks for 30 wins! 26 of those wins were 3-0.

Dijo could have kept playing for another 2 years but a combination of factors saw her lost from the game but she will never be forgotten. Her contribution to the mighty sharks might be matched or even beaten but there is one thing for sure, Dijo was an absolute champion who demolished most of her opponents in quick fashion often restricting them to very few points. That is the sign of a person with great concentration and determination.

The talented right hander with a wicked backhand was a fierce competitor who just kept finding something in the tank. Her early duels with from NSW were just awesome. Dijo first beat Tamika for the 13YAG National title in Ballarat in 2005 9-1, 9-4, 2-9, 9-5 but that just ignited the flame within Saxby to train even harder to ensure she never felt that pain again.

A ruthless Saxby returned to Hobart in 2006 and stunned Dijo with a clinical 3-0 victory 9-6 9-3 9-1 in the final of the 13YAG title. Fortunately for Queensland there was still one great performance left in Dijo that year and she produced the match of the Team Championship to down Tamika in 5 close games 10-9 in the 5th. Dijo recovered from 1-2 down to win 7-9, 9-4, 0-9, 9-3, 10-9. 6 © VOLUNTEER Thank you Michele Thornton Tournament Director: Mackay Open

5 www.northernregionsquash.net/ REDBACKS eMag 2013-12 © 2013 Maroon Magic CONTINUED A Decade of Dominance

The only match Dijo lost in AJC team competition was in 2007 to Saxby 9-1, 0-9, 7-9, 3-9.

A special tribute is extended to the Krauss family. Risto, Julius and Karl all played for the mighty Queensland Sharks. It was never easy to fund the boys to attend the various championships around the country especially from Mareeba but their father Peter got the job done. He organized some great sponsors who supported the boys for many years.

Julius and Karl won National titles but it was big brother Risto who paved the way. Despite not winning a National title Risto can be proud of his achievement of three top 3 performances: 3rd in the 13YAG event in 1999, 3rd in the 15YAG event in 2001 and 2nd in the 17YAG in 2003.

Behind all our elite juniors are some great people who influence their development. Sometimes it is a parent but in most cases it is a coach who spends countless hours helping a player to hone their skills. To all those coaches we thank you sincerely. Your efforts and contribution over many years has helped Queensland to once again dominate junior squash.

Three coaches in particular should be remembered with fondness: Austin Adarraga Snr, John Arcidiacono and Kay Barclay.

Medals are presented to Queensland’s best male and female players at the AJC each year. Those achievement awards are named in honour of Austin Adarraga Snr and Kay Barclay in recognition of the enormous contribution each has made to junior squash in Queensland over many years.

Kay Barclay was the female coach for the first 4 wins during the decade of dominance and was recognized by as Coach of the Year in 2005.

Last but not least a special mention needs to be made of Meryl Loss. Meryl was our fantastic cook for many years and she too was recognized by Squash Australia as the Volunteer of the Year in 2006. 7
