Auburn Rockets Athletics: Taking Off Again in the Fall of 2017

A new school year brings a new sports season and this fall we have picked up right where we left off last spring.

Speaking of last spring, I would like to congratulate everyone associated with our baseball team, which captured not only the Central Mass. Division 3 Tournament, but the Massachusetts Division 3 State Championship as well. The baseball team was honored as part of our /Alumni Weekend Festivities with a banquet at the Chester P. Tuttle American Legion Post on Sunday, September 24th.

The day before the baseball team banquet, several of our varsity and junior varsity teams—including boys’ and girls’ soccer, boys’ and girls’ cross coun- try and field hockey—participated in home contests. The soccer and field hockey teams all squared off against Northbridge High, while the cross country teams ran against David Prouty and Grafton.

On September 22nd the golf team kicked off Homecoming/Alumni Weekend with a home match against St. Peter-Marian, while the football team hosted North Middlesex Regional that evening at 7:00 p.m.

Prior to the official start of the fall season, Mr. David Lajoie worked with many of the fall sports teams in the weight room at Auburn High. Among the teams that participated in Mr. Lajoie’s workouts were the football, boys’ and girls’ soccer teams, the field hockey team, and also several middle school students.

This summer, football had an average of 45-50 participants while boys’ soccer had between 35-40 participants and girls’ soccer had be- tween 45-50 participants. About 15 middle school participants also participated in the program. The overall participation in the program was more than 150 boys and girls.

Mr. Lajoie is convinced, and I agree, that the summer work in the weight room is one of the reasons our athletes have enjoyed so much success in the 16 years Mr. Lajoie has been running these summer sessions. I would just like to say thank you to him for another great summer.

The fall season is in full swing with 12 teams and nearly 250 student-athletes competing on the freshman, junior varsity, and varsity levels at the high school. In addition, more than 125 student-athletes are competing at the middle school level in football, field hockey and cross country.

New coaches this season include Emily Para (varsity girls’ soccer coach), Dave Stanick (boys’ golf coach), Sean Perkins (varsity cheerleading coach) and Sara-Jean Higgins (middle school field hockey coach).

This fall we will also begin our second season of Unified Basketball. We will play a four-game schedule with games scheduled for the weeks of October 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th. We will also again participate in a second straight Sectional Jamboree from November 15th to 17th. The locations of the games that are part of the Sectional Jamboree have not yet been determined.

Unified Sports is a program that combines athletes with and without disabilities on the same team for sports training and competition. Students are again encouraged to sign up for the upcoming season.

Our student-athlete leadership program begins its third year in 2017 with more than 50 student-athletes signed up to participate. The program, led by our AHS Leadership Ambassadors, will again participate in many community service pro- jects, including raking leaves and shoveling snow for our senior citizens in town unable to do so. If anyone knows of any events or community service projects our leadership program could get involved in, please feel free to contact me.

Many of our coaches are scheduled to re-certify their CPR/AED certification. The plan is to have current AHS teachers, Allison Rusack and Greg Pratt, and possibly the recently retired Kathy Tobey conduct the hands-on training course, which is always informative to all involved.

We are off to a great start. Thank you for all of your support of our athletic programs and particularly the support for our student-athletes. We could not be the athletic program that other school districts strive to be without the help and support that the entire community provides.

New Year Brings Increased Access to iPads for All Students

The Auburn Public Schools is proud to announce that over the summer we have been able to continue to increase our district iPad inventory. Starting this year, we are not only 1:1 in grades 6-12, but now in grades 3-5 as well. This exciting development ensures that our intermediate level students will have on-demand access to their own iPad to access curriculum materials, complete classwork and create exciting online projects. While these iPads will not be going home with students, we feel they will have a positive impact on their learning.

For our younger students we were able to provide additional carts of iPads to students at Bryn Mawr and Pakachoag. Each school now has two carts of iPads per grade level, ensuring that there is an iPad available for every two students. This 1:2 environment will make it easier for teachers to access the iPads for use in daily classroom activities, including integrated curriculum programs such as Think- Central and Wonders, which are optimized for online delivery of the curriculum.

Once again, Auburn has continued to provide a 1:1 environment for our middle and high school students. All students have access to their own device that they bring home with them at night. For many students, especially those in 6th grade, this is a significant change in their regular school routine. The infographic to the left offers 10 helpful tips for all students on how to best care for and manage their devices.

We are proud of the opportunities we provide to our students through our investment in technology. Our students have a great advantage thanks to this investment and the instructional opportunities that they gain from them. As a district, we will continue to provide them, believing they have a positive impact on their learning. Eric Bouvier Director of Technology Page 5 Auburn Public Schools District Newsletter

The school year is off to a great start and the Business Office is looking forward to another productive and successful year. Liz Lynch has been welcoming our new staff and updating salaries for the coming year, while processing the bi-weekly payroll and assisting the Town with Human Resource items for the school department. Sharil Morin has been assisting our school staff with their ordering needs, ensuring that all supplies for the start of school were received and the invoices paid in a timely manner. Sharil also continues to provide support in monitoring the grants received by the District, as well as processing the District’s monetary receipts with the Town Treasurer’s office. Sharon O’Connell has spent a great deal of time in the early summer months processing the District’s bus applications to ensure that all students were assigned to a bus and receive a pass to ride that bus. She also assisted with the opening of school working with our bus vendor, AA Transportation, and myself to address busing concerns and record data on the number of riders on each bus. I can’t stress enough the importance of registering students prior to the busing deadline each spring as the routes are done in early July and late registrations create difficulties in getting students on the necessary route for a safe and comfortable ride to and from school.

With the opening of school, I would also like to recognize and thank our crossing guard staff, who are out there each and every morning and afternoon, come rain or shine to ensure the safety of our students. They work closely with School Resource Officer Brian Kennedy and school staff to continuously improve arrival and departures at each of our schools. We as a District are also very fortunate to have a great team of bus drivers who are dedicated to ensuring the safe transport of our students to and from school. As the year progresses, they come to know each of our students and many of our families who are at the bus stops. As drivers though, they are assigned a route to follow and are not allowed to make changes at the request of a parent or family member. Any concerns with regard to busing should be handled at the school level and I would ask that you contact my office directly with any questions or concerns. Lastly, students are assigned a bus pass for safety and accountability when riding the buses. Each student should have a pass with them at all times and are required to be riding the bus assigned to them. Our buses have limited seating and we plan for the students registered to ride that bus, so exceptions will only be made for emergency situations and should be addressed directly with your child’s Building Principal. Participation in the Auburn Fine Arts Department is growing!

The Auburn Fine Arts Department had a record shattering number of students join the Beginning Band and String programs at Swanson Road Intermediate School. Elementary Band Director, Rob Lesley and Elementary String Director, Kristina Caruso, have boundless energy and enthusiasm. It is clear that their passion for music is having a huge impact on their students.

Over 90 students started a band instrument this year, which is well over 50% of the 5th grade class. The string program started nearly 80 students in the 3rd and 4th grade, doubling the number of students who started last year! Having more students learn an instrument and participating in the music program is a fantastic achievement and I am excited to see the lasting and continued impact this will have for our students.

Our instrument rental night on September 7th was a huge success. The SWIS auditorium and cafeteria were both packed with students and parents excited about joining the band and string programs.

We are excited to introduce a new private lesson teacher to the district who will be helping teach cello lessons to 3rd and 4th grade string students. Renae Renihan is an alumni of the Worcester Youth Orchestra and a longtime student of the Pakachoag Music School. She lives in Auburn and is currently pursuing a degree in Music at Worcester State University.

Last year, the art faculty collaborated on a “traveling” art exhibit entitled “In Bloom” which featured student work based on the theme of flowers. This exhibit features student artists from every grade level from kindergarten to twelfth grade. Over the summer, “In Bloom” was on display at the Auburn Library. Auburn Middle School art teacher, Michele Prunier, created posters with QR codes that can be scanned to see a digital version of the exhibit.

This year, the exhibit is slated to be truly a traveling exhibit, with plans for it to be displayed at the Central Office, Town Hall, and other locations around Auburn. Keep your eyes out for the “In Bloom” exhibit around town!

Last but not least, I would like to report on our partnership with Unibank, who also works with the Town of Auburn, to offer the option of online payments to support our families. Last year, we started off with the Preschool Tuition payments and the iPad Insurance Fees. At this time, I am happy to report that we have added the Bus Registration Fee, the Before and After School Programs (Satellite, Galaxy, Asteroid and Lil Rockets), Fine Arts for Musical Instrument programs and also a Miscellaneous tab which can be used to make a one-time payment, such as a cord and/or charger for the iPad. The reports from our staff using the program are extremely positive as it is straightforward and it reduces the collection of cash at the school department level. I am hoping it has been a positive alternative for families as well. I believe it may be as we seem to have more and more families opting to take advantage of the online payment and I have heard from only a small number of parents who may have had difficulty initially but have been able to resolve it quickly. For added convenience, courtesy of the Technology Department, we have added a kiosk in the front office at 5 West Street, where if you come in to make a payment with only your credit card, you can sign in and create an account, completing the transaction at that very moment. Our staff is also available to assist you if needed. I gladly welcome any feedback from our families on your experience, so that we can continue to ensure it is a convenient, effective and satisfying program for all.

Best wishes for a wonderful year! Cecelia Wirzbicki Business Manager Page 7 Auburn Public Schools District Newsletter
