Theodore Farris II University of North Texas, USA ABSTRACT Increasingly, research across many disciplines has recognized the shortcomings of the traditional “in- tegration prescription” for inter-organizational knowledge management. This research conducts several simulation experiments to study the effects of different rates of product change, different demand envi- ronments, and different economies of scale on the level of integration between firms at different levels in the supply chain. The underlying paradigm shifts from a static, steady state view to a dynamic, complex adaptive systems and knowledge-based view of supply chain networks. Several research propositions are presented that use the role of knowledge in the supply chain to provide predictive power for how supply chain collaborations or integration should evolve. These environments commonly need supplies, clothing and food in quantities and times that defy other logistics operations. Such humanitarian logistics processes occur through the humanitarian supply chain. One of the critical factors for the uninterrupted flow of humanitarian logistics operations and the management of relevant supply chains is the donations management, a logistic flow with unique features and characteristics. Donations management is an imperative and relevant aspect in humanitarian operations.

Introduction Collaboration represents a strategic alternative to the monolithic approach to business development and competition. The evolution of information systems in these collaborative environments led to a sudden necessity to adopt, for maintaining all kind of virtual activities/processes, the latest technologies/systems that are capable to support integrated collaboration in business services. It is obvious that, all collaborative environments (workgroups, practice communities, collaborative enterprises) are based on knowledge, and between collaboration and knowledge management (KM) there is a strong interdependence. Therefore, we focused on how collaborative systems are capable to sustain knowledge management and their impact on optimizing the KM life cycle.     Collaboration: A Framework for School Improvement Collaboration: A Framework for School Improvement LORRAINE SLATER University of Calgary Abstract: The ability to work collaboratively with others is becoming an essential component of contemporary school reform. This article reviews current trends in school reform that embody collaborative principles and also draws on the literature to provide a theoretical overview of collaboration itself. The article then outlines the findings from a qualitative, self-contained focus group study that involved 16 individuals (parents, teachers, and administrators) who were selected using a purposeful sampling technique. According to Patton (1990), “the purpose of purposeful sampling is to select information rich cases whose study will illuminate the questions under study” (p.169). Accordingly, because of their experience in collaborative school improvement activities, the participants were able to assist the researcher in addressing the general research question, what are the understandings, skills, and attitudes held by participants in school improvement initiatives that result in successful collaboration. This study allowed the essential nature of collaboration to show itself and speak for itself through participants’ descriptions of their experiences. The findings are presented within a graphic conceptualization that not only represents the large number of issues that participants identified in their collaborations, but also demonstrates the complexity of the interrelations between these issues and school improvement. The model provides a framework for thinking about the school improvement process that is anchored in collaboration. Introduction Themes of teacher empowerment and professionalism, school-based management, shared decision making, and choice and voice for parents have dominated school reform in the last decade.

Collaborative logistics is becoming more important in today’s industry. This is driven by increased environmental concerns, improved efficiency through collaborative planning supporting resources sharing and new business models implementation. This paper explores collaborative logistics and reports on business applications within the forest products industry in Sweden and Canada. It first describes current opportunities in collaborative planning. It then discusses issues related to building the coalition as well as sharing resources and benefits. Three business cases are described and used to support the discussion around these main issues. Finally, different challenges are detailed, opening new paths for researchers in the field. So far, however, we understand little about the organization design that can support shared purpose in the context of large, complex business enterprises. Building on the work of Selznick and Weber, we argue that such contexts require a new organizational form, one that we call collaborative. The collaborative organizational form is grounded in Weber’s value-rational type of social action, but overcomes the scale limitations of the collegial form of organization that is conventionally associated with value-rational action. We identify four organizational principles that characterize this collaborative form and a range of managerial policies that can implement those principles.
