You will be delighted to note that in 2009, AOF set up as many as four computer centres for the visually challenged. At each, between 6 to10 swank new computers and specialized software for the visually challenged, furniture, air-conditioner has been set up. The computer centres – we refer to them as Centres for Excellence – have come up in Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Chandigarh – one in each region. Three ministers, one Principal Secretary, as well as the Chairman of AOF, Bill Pinckney, and vice-Chairman AOF, Randeep Sisodia inaugurated the Centres for Excellence, two of which are recognized by the technical education departments of the respective state Governments.
Between 1999 and 2005, AOF had 15 projects under which Braille textbooks were brought out for children of 12 states. Our intervention worked and our NGO partners began receiving assistance from education departments of the state governments to finance Braille textbooks. Which is when we re-focused our efforts, and after consultations with our NGO partners, decided to set up computer centres for the visually challenged.
The computer centre had been established in early 2002, at the Rama Krishna Mission Blind Boys Academy, in Narendrapur, West Bengal. This proved most useful not just to the students of this school, but also University students and those employed in PSUs. Besides Narendrapur, we now have computer centres at Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Chandigarh, Delhi, Thiruvananthapuram and Jaipur. Each Centre for Excellence has internet connectivity, Microsoft word, excel, power point, with the specialized software – Jaws, which helps the visually challenged use the computer just as other do.
At Ahmedabad, we have joined hands with Andh Kanya Prakash Gruh, at Memnagar. “The children were curious and keen to get their turn at using the computers,” said Mr Pinckney. Around 450 girls will benefit.
At Kolkata, the Centre for Excellence has come up at NAB, Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road. Here, the Information and Technology Minister Debesh Das, Labour dept Minister, Anadi Kumar Sahu, were present at the inauguration. Graduates will receive a certification from the state technical education department.
At Chandigarh too, the computer center was launched in association with NAB at Asha Kiran - Sector 46 D, a vocational training institute for disabled. Speaking on the occasion Mr. Sisodia said, “this will provide our friends an opportunity to learn the use of computers and lead them to economic independence.”
At Hyderabad, the AOF-Devnar Foundation Centre for Excellence has come up at the Devnar Foundation School. This centre is recognized by the technical education department, government of Andhra Pradesh.
