COLLEGE

Boarders’ High Tea, Pavilion

From the principal Dear College Community Reconciliation Week Last week Rostrevor College celebrated National Reconciliation Week. Reconciliation Week is built around the anniversary of three key dates: National Sorry Day which was first held in 1998; the referendum of 1967; and the Mabo Decision of 1992.

The first Sorry Day was held on 26th May 1998; exactly one year after the Bringing Them Home Report was presented to the Federal Parliament. Of course, this finally led to the apology on 13th February 2008 when Prime Minister Kevin Rudd apologised to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, for the policies which ‘inflicted profound grief, suffering and loss on these, our fellow Australians.’

May 27th marked the anniversary of Australia’s most successful referendum and a defining event in our nation’s history. The 1967 referendum saw over 90 per cent of Australians vote to give the Commonwealth the power to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and recognise them in the national census.

June 3rd was the anniversary of one of Australia’s most important legal rulings. In 1992 the High Court of Australia delivered its landmark Mabo decision which legally recognised that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have a special relationship to the land that existed prior to colonisation and still exists today. This recognition paved the way for land rights called Native Title.

As a nation there has been much progress in the cause of Reconciliation, but there is so much still to do. As an inclusive community that has embraced our call to continue to work towards Reconciliation, Rostrevor College is proud of its Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. Our diversity is a source of strength and a sign of hope for the future. My thanks to our Indigenous Liaison Co-ordinator, Barrie Bryan, for promoting Reconciliation Week throughout our school community.

On Tuesday night, 26th May, the Boarding House celebrated the beginning of Reconciliation Week with a very special Formal Dinner. The guest speaker was former basketball great and current Aboriginal Programs Manager at Port , Paul Vandenbergh, who was inspirational in his message to all students about the importance of reconciliation to our nation. Other special guests were Port Adelaide players Paddy Ryder and Karl Amon who stressed the importance of perseverance and education during a question and answer session. Congratulations to Josh Gabb who received the Spirit of Reconciliation Award by the popular Friday 5th june 2015 vote of our Aboriginal boarders. Well done to our Director of Boarding, Eugene Evans on organising a very special night. eek 6 6 W eek bsentee line: 8364 8387 8364 line: bsentee erm 2, 2, T erm A

Last Thursday our Year 11 cohort travelled into the city to visit a local mosque and St Patrick’s Church in Grote Street. This is part of their Term 2 Religious studies unit on Catholicism and Islam. The Mosque is one of the oldest in Australia and was built in the 1890’s in Little Sturt Street in the city. The Cathedral is our usual option as well but this year it is undergoing renovation so we decided on St Patrick’s, another church in the CBD with a great history. Given the current world situation it was an important chance to discover the genuine teachings of these two major world religions.

6Adelaide Football Club, Growing with Gratitude Program 7 Annual Catholic Schools Athletics Carnival

On Monday 1 June, our Primary Athletics Team took part in the Annual Catholic Schools Athletics Carnival at SANTOS Stadium. Rostrevor competed in the Section 1 Division for South Australian Catholic Schools. The boys eagerly took to the track and field where they performed extremely well throughout the day.

All of the boys are to be congratulated for their levels of participation and efforts to ensure the day was a success. Rostrevor created history by winning the Championship Pennant for the boys section. The win made it four wins in a row for Rostrevor, a feat that has never been accomplished in the past. This was an amazing effort by the boys as they competed against many schools.

The Under 10 Age Group won the overall points Pennant. Alex Pertl was also the Age Champion for the Under 10 Age Group and Thomas Cusack convincingly won Age Champion Award for the Open Pentathlon.

I would like to thank the parents/family members who supported their son on the day and in particular Luke De Leonardis, Cathy Haddad, Dianne Mahar-Versace, John Pertl, Peter Piasente, Stefan Nijihawan and Brodie Turner who provided excellent assistance throughout the day.

I would also like to thank Brother Coughlin who gave up his time to provide extra training sessions for the squad. Your skills and assistance were very much appreciated.

First XI def Pulteney Grammar School 4-0

Rostrevor’s fifth victory was never in doubt as they dominated with a magnificent display, the only surprise being that it took until 10 minutes before half-time for their control to be rewarded with a Patrick Caraccia goal. Louis Conterno confirmed that superiority with a great goal shortly after the restart - a swerving, dipping 25-yard thunderbolt that flew high past the startled Pulteney keeper. Pulteney were a shadow of the side that have performed so impressively already this season, their flaws exposed ruthlessly as Marc Cavallin who took advantage of an embarrassing lack of marking to head the third. Man-of-the-match Patrick Caraccia took his second, and the Rostrevor fourth, in the final moments and completed what was a harrowing day for the city-based side. Rostrevor recorded a tactical victory over Pulteney, with the decision to use the pace of Noah Bonnici to take on their defence, rather than the power of Jules Esposito, reaping rich rewards. In the end Rostrevor’s pace PRINCIPAL’S and mobility ran them ragged.
