Meet the Coach

This month, the focus of Meet the Coach is on Ross Bird. Ross joined Bayside Netball Club in 2012, and currently coaches our Under 17 Division 3, who at the time of press are undefeated,

Name: Ross Cheverly Bird

Nickname: At Uni it was “Tweet” yelled loudly by friends in large lecture theatres to assist in locating them.

Date of Birth: 23 December 1962

Occupation/Profession: Equity Research Analyst / Strategist

Sport played: Mostly Football and Hockey

Favourite TV Shows: Breaking Bad, Homeland, Gruen Transfer

Favourite Food: Fresh flathead or snapper

Most admired Sportsperson: Gary Ablett Senior

Started Coaching: 2008

Favourite Netball memory: First season of club I coached an U13 section 3 team. We got to the grand final and it was at 3.00pm (at Kingston), much later than our home and away game times. I went to the courts at that time the day before to see what angle the sun was at. Saw where the sun was at 35 minutes later (ie start of the 4th quarter time) to determine which way to go in the first quarter if we had the choice.

At half time, we were 4 goals down (8 – 12) so we went all out in attack. Moved a very fit WD to C and an aggressive style C to WA and encouraged all the girls to back themselves. Second half score was 16 – 4 so we won 24 – 16. I was hooked after that but realise now how much that young team taught me about netball and was just lucky to start off coaching with a motivated group.

Swisse Southern Saints update

The Swisse Southern Saints ended their pre-season with the traditional season launch function. This year it was held at Glasshouse Caulfield Racecourse. The team captains were announced and congratulations to Nikki in the Development team, Charlotte, Zoe and Sophie for the 19’s, Adele in Division 1 and Leah in Championship. The nights guest speaker was Sarah Wall, telling of her journey to play elite netball.

Other news is that the Development continue their winning streak and now are 4 from 4.

The VNL season has started and the club recorded a couple of solid wins against Monash Cen- tral. Bayside representative Rahni Samason played her first game in the 19’s and acquitted her- self very well. Rahni will also be in the 19’s squad for Round 2.

The Championship team also had a good win over Monash and it was Jane Searles first win for the club. We also welcomed 2 new players to the champ team, with Sarah Wall becoming Medicalchamp player Corner number 30 and Maddie White becoming champ player number 31. Division 1 had a narrow loss but against quality opposition, it was a good result for the club.

We look forward to seeing a big Bayside Netball Club presence at our first home game at Mentone Grammar on Sunday, March 24th. There will be a curtain raiser game between Bayside and Eastside prior to the Championship game. Tickets will be available at the door.

Go Saints ______
