Incidents Update: During the reporting period two natural disaster incidents were reported.

Central Region:

: On the 5th of February, ANDMA and IRC reported heavy snowfall and harsh winter affecting around 15 families in Kharwar district. Six casualties, including those of two children were also recorded. Families in other districts of the province were also severely affected. In response, IOM and IRC conducted an assessment in six districts: Baraki Barak, Kharwar, Khoshi, Pul-e-Alam, Mohammad Agha and centre, on the 10th of February. 152 families were confirmed for an assistance (houses severely damaged). IOM provided winter warm clothing to all families on the 20th of February, while IRC provided tarpaulins, in addition to 27 latrine kits and kitchen sets to female headed families.

Central Highland Region:

• Ghor-Lal Wa Sarejangal Province: On the 2nd of February, as per information from Lal Wa Sarejangal district’s governor and ANDMA in Ghor, 70 families were displaced from Qafla, Taimazar, Khawzari Bala, Khawzari Payen villages to Dara and Khawzari Meyana villages due to avalanches and snowstorm. Despite the transportation difficulties due to heavy snowfall, IOM together with CDC, Lal DDMC and a representative from Lal district government conducted an assessment on the 8th of February. 65 families were found displaced from Dara and Seya Bomak villages to Khawzari Payen, Khawzari Bala, Khawzari Meyana, Qafla and Taimazar villages. The families are currently living in the mosques and with host families. The main needs of the IDPs were winter warm clothing, Ghor, Lal wa Sarejangal, avalanche/Snow storm displaced families receiving Warm clothing, Blanket, and solar lightening device. IOM, 14 February 2013 blankets, hygiene kits, solar modules and food items. IOM assisted all families with the provision of winter warm clothing, blankets and solar lightening devices on the 14th of February, while food items and hygiene kits have been referred to WFP and OCHA.

 As reported by Lal wa Sarejangal district governor, on the 17th of February, two additional families were affected by harsh winter in Lal wa Sarjangal (Sar Qawala village) of . Two deaths (six and ten days old infants), due to pneumonia and high vulnerability of the families in the cold weather, were confirmed by DoPH. An initial assessment, conducted by ACF-Ghor, ARCS, ANDMA, DoPH and Office of the DG, recommended the families for NFIs, warm clothing, and food items. IOM will provide warm clothing and blankets to both families.

South Region:

: On the 16th of February, as reported to OCHA via Zabul ANDMA, flood affected around 127 families in several villages of Zabul province, Arghandab district. Despite insecurity and challenging access to [1]

the district, an ad-hoc meeting was held on the 20th of February in Kandahar to coordinate an assessment to be conducted on the 21st of February. IOM is monitoring the situation and its field staff in Zabul will join the assessment team. The findings will be shared once the assessment finalised.

East Region:

: On the 4th of February, as per initial reports, heavy rainfall affected 29 families in eight districts of Kunar province: Dara-I-Pech, Asmar, Nurgal, Dangam, Khas Kunar, Chapa Dara, Shegal, and Sarkani. The joint assessment teams assigned by PDMC initiated the assessments on the 6th of February. IOM, WFP and ANDMA covered five Kunar districts: Chapa Dara, Dara-i-Pech, Wata Poor, Asadabad, Marawara; while IMC assessed Nurgal, Khas Kunar, Asmar, Chawki, Narang, Sarkani districts; and ARCs Dangam, Ghazi Abad, Shegal, Narry, and Asmar districts. The assessments of the affected districts were th completed on the 13 of February. 117 families were Kunar, Dara-i-Pech, assessment of heavy rainfall affected families, IOM, 12 February 2013 identified for emergency assistance in Dara-i-Pech, Asmar, Nurgal, Dangam, Khas Kunar, Chapa Dara, Shegal, Sarkani, Asadabad, Watapur, Marawara, and Narang districts. The main needs of the affected families were NFIs, emergency shelter and food items. IOM delivered family revitalisation, winter warm clothing, emergency shelter and solar lightening kits to all families while WFP has committed to provide food items.

IMC: IMC identified 58 families in Khas Kunar, Chawki, Sarkani, Nurgal and Asadabad districts and has committed to provide NFIs, while WFP has committed to provide food items.

ARCS: ARCS identified 89 families in Ghazi Abad, Narry, Dangan, Asmar and Shegal districts, and has Kunar, Dara-i-Pech, distribution of family revitalization and emergency shelter kits to heavy committed to provide NFIs while needs for food rainfall affected families, IOM, 19 February 2013 items were referred to WFP.

West Region:

– Following heavy rainfall reported by ANDMA on the 3rd of February, an unknown number of families were reported to be severely affected in several locations of Farah city. The assessment team consisting of ANDMA and DoRR representatives visited the area on the 4th of February and found that the houses of 35 families were severely damaged. Consequently, ANDMA provided food for all 35 families and UNICEF provided household items for 25 families.
