Biography

What makes Shri Sadyojat Shankarashram Swamiji, the 11th spiritual head of the Shri Chitrapur Math (based in Shirali, ), a modern sage ever-willing to save you from the quicksand of plummeting self-esteem as you grapple with ballooning targets, multiplying desires and diminishing time and energy?

An uncanny ability to put you at ease swiftly, listen without interrupting as you ‘unburden’ and then gently, unobtrusively, push aside your flaws and focus only on your positive potential. A firm insistence that you must keep your body fit in order to - nurture an alert mind, sharpen your skills for worldly success and enable your- self better to begin your spiritual quest. A multilingual capacity to de-mystify complex spiritual texts in simple, everyday prose. A ‘presence’ that leads by example and inspires you to first rise above self-absorption and then reach out to empower the less able. Most importantly, a towering sense of humor that constantly light- ens the air, bridges the gap and makes you feel that this New Age Guru is a “friend indeed!” These are some of the relevant reasons why so many young adults, armed with multiple degrees and zooming up MNC lad- ders, are seeking initiation, memorizing chants and proudly professing how Swamiji is helping them to return to their roots, to ‘re-discover’ themselves!

For over 300 years now, the 22,000-strong Chitrapur Saraswat community has been blessed with the grace and spiritual guidance of erudite Masters who have taught their disciples to live a life of purity, simplicity and service to the community. From the time he accepted this mammoth responsibility in 1997, Shri Sadyojat Shankarashram ,who is the 11th Mathadhipati (pontiff), has made seekers understand the importance of self- less service on the path of ‘sadhana’. His initiative and vigilant supervision has led to the formation of several charitable trusts and a growing army of committed volunteers who contribute time, resources and skills to various schemes that educate the local population, class caste no bar, from several villages around the Math in the vital areas of education, health care and ways to generate an income and thereby achieve self-respect. One such project – Samvit Sudha- has won the Motibhai Doshi Award for woman empowerment.

Trained ‘sanchaalaks’ (who are more like loving surrogate parents) at 40 centres around the world, helping to build a strong cultural base in children from double-income and no-grandparent households; regular ‘shibirs’ (camps) for young adults including the NRI gen- next, where an astute mix of outdoor activities, cul- tural packages, intelligence tests, career counseling by experts and oodles of plain fun ensures a wholesome diet for body, mind and spirit; global chains of a pre-decided set of spiritual practices for young and old aspir- ants– these are some of the enchanting and engrossing ways by which Swamiji has succeeded in creating a worldwide family of like-minded members who support one another while pursuing a common goal.
