Com o livro Cancioneiro do Cacau venceu o Prêmio Nacional Ribeiro Couto, da União Brasi- leira de Escritores, do Rio de Janeiro, e o Internacional de Literatura Maestrale Marengo d’Oro, em Genova, Itália. Participou como convi- dado do Terceiro Encontro Internacional de Poetas da Universidade de Coimbra, Portugal. Seus contos fi guram em diversas antologias no Brasil e exterior. Tradutor amador e profi s- sional, ele tem também ensinado em cursos sobre teoria e prática da tradução, em nível de pós-graduação. Organizou o livro “Limites de Traduzibilidade/The Limits of Translatability” (Salvador, EDUFBA, 1966), incluindo na obra dois artigos de sua autoria. LUIZ ANGÉLICO is Professor Emeritus of the Federal University of Bahia, where, for thirthy years, he lectured on disciplines of Ameri- can Literature and English Literature, having written several articles in Portuguese and in English about these subjects and about translation, most of them published in specialized national periodicals. An ama- teur and professional translator, he has also taught courses on theory and practice of translation at post-graduation level. He organized the book “Limites da Traduzibilidade/The Limits of Translatability” (Sal- vador, EDUFBA, 1966), which includes two articles of his own. He has recently fi nished the English translation of the book “De Terre et de Larmes”, with the collaboration of the author of the French original A. S. Scheinowitz. He was dead in 2011. O livro A casa verde e outros poemas, de Cyro de Mattos, com tradução para o inglês do Professor Emérito da UFBA, Doutor Luiz Angélico, compõe-se de duas partes, como o próprio título indica. No primeiro momento, o poeta baia- no Cyro de Mattos inspira-se na Casa Verde, que serviu de residência a Henrique Alves dos Reis (1861-1942), coronel do cacau, e sua esposa, dona Cordolina Loup dos Reis, a fi lha Elvira e o genro Miguel Moreira, que foi prefeito de Itabuna. Com versos despojados, de lirismo puro, o pre- miado poeta baiano (de Itabuna) faz uma viagem no tempo perdido e busca recuperar sua alma através do diálogo que estabelece entre a poesia e a memória, que é o lugar de onde emerge a história com as pessoas, fatos e coisas. Local de importantes decisões políticas do município, reuniões sociais e festivas, a Casa Verde tornou-se cenário de luxo e requinte nos anos 30. Preserva até hoje em seu acervo o passado da conquista e do domínio dos coronéis do cacau. O poeta recria com sufi ciência um tempo áureo da civili- zação cacaueira baiana, sugerido pelas peças e indumen- tárias dos séculos XIX e XX, pertencentes à família de Henrique Alves Reis. Em cada coisa que toca, em cada voz que escuta, no aroma que fl ui nos cômodos, na solidão de Dona Elvira, que não teve o herdeiro para prosseguir o ciclo, usa os referenciais como signos identifi cáveis do homem e a vida. E fi ltra com densidade poética o mando e a solidão, o fausto e o triste, o efêmero e o eterno onde tudo se esconde. O segundo momento do livro é formado pelos poemas “Canto a Nossa Senhora das Matas”, “Um Poema Todo Verde”, “Morcego”, “Boi”, “Galos”, “A Roda do Tempo”, “A Árvore e a Poesia”, “Passarinhos” e “Devas- tação” (I,II). São poemas de vibrante força telúrica, puros como o chão de quem possui um modo próprio de fazer poesia universal sem perder de vistas os muros da aldeia, ou seja, por meio de seu timbre nativo da origem tornada lin- guagem, como bem sublinhou o crítico e poeta Ledo Ivo. Há que ressaltar em A casa verde e outros poemas a tra- dução primorosa para o inglês realizada pelo poeta, ensaís- ta e Professor Emérito Doutor Luiz Angélico. Homem eru- dito, simples e fraterno, de uma atuação admirável como professor de inglês no curso de Letras da Universidade Fe- deral da Bahia, tradutor renomado, sua tradução para a lín- gua inglesa de A casa verde e outros poemas é possivelmente um de seus últimos trabalhos no setor, antes de nos deixar para outra dimensão.
