In footy’s 150th year, we pay tribute to the clubs and leagues that are the heartbeat of rural and urban Victoria Mornington Peninsula Nepean fl mt eliza Founded: 1966 Nickname: Redlegs Premierships: 1983, 1998, 2001, 2005 VFL/AFL players (include): Michael Demaine (Hawthorn), Stewart Loewe (pictured below – St Kilda), Nathan Jones (Melbourne), Mark Foyster (St Kilda), Glenn Harrison (Hawthorn), Bowen Lockwood (Port Adelaide) Mt. Eliza Short history Mount Eliza played in the reserves of the Mornington Peninsula Football League in its debut season. The Redlegs joined the MPNFL in 1968 and won their first flag in 1983. The club’s biggest rival is neighbour Mornington. Great eras The club started to gain strength and recognition in the 1980s. Not only did the club win its first flag in 1983, but the Redlegs also appointed Greg Lambert as senior coach and he managed to mould the club into a force to be reckoned with. The hard work in this time bore fruit when the club won three flags from 1998- 2005, as well as two reserves and five under-18 premierships. Club legends The 1983 premiership laid a foundation for the club to build upon in the following decades. Coach Lambert and captain Tom Faithfull are regarded as club legends for the part they played, as are Adam Woinarski and Andrew Hassett. The club’s strong showing in the 1990s produced players such as Carl Gwnyee and Mark Glen. Defining moments After finishing on top the ladder with 15 wins from 18 games in 2005, the Redlegs went into the premiership decider against Frankston YCW as favourites. But no one could have predicted the outcome. Mount Eliza dominated from the start to score a record 27.17 (179) to 7.5 (47) victory.

Edithvale-aspendale Founded: 1921/1924 Nickname: Eagles Premierships: 1940 (Federal FA); 1965, 1978 (Mornington Peninsula FL); 1987 (Division 2), 1989, 1999, 2000, 2002 (MPNFL) VFL/AFL players (include): Laurie Sharp (Richmond), (Melbourne), (Melbourne), (Melbourne), Michael Moncrieff (pictured below – Hawthorn)Edithvale-Aspendale Short history Edithvale was founded in 1921, while Aspendale began three years later. The teams amalgamated in 1931, becoming the Regents Park Football Club. The club became Edithvale-Aspendale in 1935 and played in the Federal Football Association until it joined the MPFL in 1956. The club’s greatest foe in the MPNFL is Chelsea – its nearest neighbour and a rival since FFA days. Club legends The club is very proud of all Eagles who went on to play at the elite level, but one club icon not to play league football is Brett Wright – one of the great clubmen in Victorian footy. Wright won a league best-and-fairest, seven club B&Fs and played in three premierships among his 300-plus games. He also coached the club to three flags in five years and is a life member of both the club and league. His commitment has not finished, with Wright now coaching the under-18s. Controversy Edithvale-Aspendale was expelled from the Federal association in 1955, officially for the late payment of fees. But the club has always maintained the real reason it was booted out was so the league could avoid having a bye in its draw. All details are provided by the clubs.
