35 Critiques

Studio based learning is hands on – a living creative lab experience – and an important part of the AUArts experience . Studio courses involve faculty instruction and facilitation in support of creative projects, and typically involve ‘critiques’ or ‘crits’ rather than exams.

A critique allows reflection and assessment of the characteristics and merits of each student’s work. A simple definition of a complex process that comprises a crucial part of an AUArts education. Tips & Tricks

Each instructor has their own approach, but here are some key things to keep in mind: • Crit is about the work, not the maker; it’s not personal • The environment for crit is one of mutual respect between all of the participants • Crit skills are like any other, they can be learned and improved • Be an active participant – listen, reflect and speak & make eye contact with everyone, and make sure your voice carries • Take notes, or ask a friend to take notes for you – this will give you a chance to look back on feedback before starting a new project • Find new inspiration from the critique, visit galleries, talk to your peers, surf the web and explore new viewpoints and angles
