The last time I had choreographed to The Beatles was in 1993 when I did the Summer section of Seasons. I had been waiting for the right time to find the opportunity again and grabbed it that year for our final show of the season. Act One (Innocence) was done during one summer in Ashland, while we were in residence at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. It opens with "Here Comes the Sun," a bright, luminous song reminding us of our adolescence and the dreams and hopes we had when we were young. In fact, the first act is the story of our search for meaning, wonder, fun, friendship and love in the world we are beginning to discover as young adults, and the consequences of making choices, be they right or wrong. It is set in the world of the "hippies" and "flower people" who create a community that experiences the exhilaration of liberation and free love. 2 In Act Two {Decadence), the awareness has definitely changed to one of jaded and corrupted perception. We explore the worlds of altered states of consciousness, influences of the material world and disappointment in our expectations of love. The act culminates with the powerful song "Let It Be." My collaborators on the project were costume designer Barry Doss and lighting designer Laura E. Glover, who helped bring this vision of the 1960s-inspired material to life. Barry also did the fantastic costumes for Carmina Burana and The Planets, and all of you know Laura's beautiful work. She has lit every DK concert since I became Artistic Director in 1991. Oh, and by the way, enjoy the waves of nostalgia as you hear these timeless songs.
