Description and Purpose of Module This module introduces the student to the history of the genre of Music Video. Starting in the 1950's with live video performances transmitted on TV programmes such as American Bandstand, Shindig, and The Ed Sullivan Show; continuing on through to the introduction of MTV in 1981; to the rise of the modern music video and its abstracts. This module also investigates the influences of film and television soundtracks on such shows as the Monkees; the preconceived effects in a social context of the media such as the Vietnam conflict and the Civil rights movement; the significance of the medium and how it evolved to its modern contemporaries of auteurship and the rise of MTV and the celebrity of Directors as auteurs from Michelle Gondry to from to Hype Williams. Detailed attention is paid to the auteurs for their visual styling and techniques attributed to their technology and frame composition. The advent of technology is another strong focus within this course as we look at its impact on the style of the . Furthermore the module explores, in context to the era, the effects of the technology available in the development and production of music videos from the kinetoscope to the rotoscopic line art techniques

Learning, Teaching and Assessment Learning will take place through a series of lectures and presentations. Considering the overwhelming gamut of music videos on the internet platform, this is more of a theory based course on structure and open to wide scale debate and interaction amongst the students when it comes to aesthetic analysis of the directors styling and technique.
