PERSONAL: • Joel Elias Payamps. • Married to Darvelis and has two daughters, Shanel and Alice. • Grew up idolizing Hall of Famer Pedro Martínez. • His grandpa, Julio “Guayabita” Payamps, used to be a pitcher in Santiago, but he was never signed...Joel is still known as Julio’s grandson in his hometown...His grandpa taught him how to grip the ball. • Also played basketball as a kid and would bet the other kids their juice and toast when they’d play H-O-R-S-E at school. • Originally signed as an international free agent by the on July 2, 2010. LAST SEASON: • Spent the majority of the summer at the Diamondbacks’ aternate training site but made his way into two MLB contests, allowing one run over 3.0 innings. • Made eight appearances for the Estrellas de Oriente in the Dominican Winter League, allowing two runs over 13.0 frames with two walks and 14 for a 1.08 WHIP and a 1.38 ERA.
