Monthly Parish News April 2016 SIAMS Inspection

The distinctiveness and effectiveness of St Botolph’s as a Church of England Primary School are OUTSTANDING

On Wednesday 9th March, we received our Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools (SIAMS). The National SIAMS framework is used in all inspections of Church of England schools. The principal objective of the SIAMS inspection is to evaluate the distinctiveness and effectiveness of the school as a Church school. Towards this objective, inspectors seek answers to four core questions. These are:  How well does the school, through its distinctive Christian character, meet the needs of all learners?  What is the impact of collective worship on the school community?  How effective is the religious education?  How effective are the leadership and management of the school as a church school? The Church school inspector used the day to gather a range of on-site evidence. This, together with discussions with Parents, children, Governors and staff and observations of lessons, playtimes and other documentation enabled the inspector to assess the accuracy of the school’s own evaluations. This achievement is a credit to all involved and especially assisted by the close working relationships developed in recent times with members of the congregation at St Botolph’s in a number of different ways. A BIG THANK YOU TO EVERYONE

On the 9th March, some children from years 3, 4 and 5 went on a trip to Highcross Shopping Centre in Leicester. We didn’t go for a shopping spree but to look at the range of careers that are available in Highcross. We were split into two groups and taken to different stores and sections of the shopping centre, where we could meet different members of staff and have the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about their jobs, whilst participating in very fun workshops. Each group visited a restaurant, one group to a restaurant called Bill’s and the other group to Byron Burger. Both groups were given a tour of the restaurant, including the kitchen (which is top secret and not usually seen by members of the public) and were given lots of information on what it is like working in the catering industry. The staff at Bill’s were kind enough to make the children some smoothies to taste and the children at Bryon Burger were able to make their own milkshakes.

Next, we visited the Showcase Cinema de Lux. We met the deputy managers who took us into the Directors’ Lounge and told us all about working in the cinema industry. We were then taken into Screen 3 where we watched a trailer and discussed the purpose of trailers. The trailer was for The BFG, which comes out in July. We all agreed it was a really compelling trailer and made us want to watch the full film. Just before lunch, we visited a place called the WOT Space. ‘WOT’ stands for We Own This Space. Tina who manages the WOT Space told us this is an empty unit used to bring people together, engaging the community and

Page 8

supporting local enterprise. Whilst we were there she also told us about how children can stay safe when shopping with their family at Highcross, using the system called Child Safe. We were even given opportunities to make suggestions which could improve the system.

After lunch, we visited the Build-A-Bear Workshop. The children loved looking round the shop and hearing about what the job of an assistant manager at Build-A-Bear Workshop entailed. One group chose a bear and the other a dog to go through the building process. We were lucky enough to bring our stuffed animals back to school, where they will live in the hall as a souvenir of our day. Finally, we were privileged to visit the control room. Usually, this is a top secret secure place and you need a special authority to go there! We learnt lots about how the CCTV footage allows security staff to keep everyone in Highcross safe. We were fascinated by looking at all the footage on the big screens and even saw ourselves on the screens (waving and dancing at the cameras). There are over 530 cameras in Highcross and the recordings from all of them are routinely kept for 31 days. We had a lovely day learning all about the different jobs available in Highcross and about the skills required for each of those. We now have lots of children who are inspired with new possible job aspirations. Here is what some of the children said: “The best part of the day was definitely the control room – it was so interesting.” “I definitely want to work at Build-A-Bear when I’m older.” “I really liked visiting the Byron Burger – I think I’d like to be a chef.”

St Botolph’s Mother’s Union Report For our March meeting we were visited by Gill Knight and two colleagues from the Women’s Welcome Project and they gave us a fascinating insight into the plight of asylum seekers in this country. The organisation operates in Leicester and seeks to help those who come from war-torn countries. Elizabeth, a volunteer with the project told us how she became involved and explained the different types of people who request shelter here, asylum seekers being those who seek a right to remain under international law. Linda told us how she left Kosovo sixteen years ago with her husband, fleeing from a bitter and destructive war. She described a horrendous journey across Europe in overcrowded boats, making for Germany where they had relatives. They failed in this, but were eventually brought to England in a shipping container. It was the middle of winter and she was pregnant at the time. Not a journey made by choice! We were challenged to consider how we would feel if we woke up in a strange country, knowing nobody. The language, climate, food and culture we take for granted would be incomprehensible. Where would we go for help? Linda was provided with ‘small’ things by the Project – practical help such as a few toiletries; advice; the opportunity to make friends in a safe place. She emphasised how much they mean because they show that someone cares. She expressed her gratitude to God, to the Project and to this country for protecting and helping her at that awful time. Later, we were pleased to enrol Glennis Wilcox, Tricia Shore, Caroline Greenfield and Michael Everitt as new members. Doris again organised our lunch – a Lenten meal of home-made soup, bread, cheese and biscuits. 29 people enjoyed it this time and once again we thank her and her team. All are welcome to join us next month, when we look forward to roast pork, followed by fruit crumble! Do come along!

TUESDAY GROUP REPORT On 1st March we had a talk about the National Trust Property of Ston- eywell, at Ulvescroft. Stoneywell was built as a summer residence by Arts and Crafts architect-designer Ernest Gimson for his brother Sydney Gimson, director of Gimson & Co. Vulcan Works Leicester. Work started on the building in 1898 and to fit the sight it was designed to a zig-zag plan. It is built of Swithland Stone and Slate and originally had a straw thatch roof which was replaced by slate in 1939 after a fire. The design of the house and its furniture in an Arts and Crafts style was influenced by a meeting with William Morris. In 1899 the family stayed there for the first time spending the spring and summer there, returning to Leicester in the autumn. They often spent Christmas at Stoneywell too. In 1947 son Basil retired and moved to Stoneywell living there from 1947 to 1953. In turn his son Donald and wife Anne resided there from 1953 to 2012 updating the house and garden. It was sold to the Nation- al Trust in 2013 who acquired the house with its Arts and Crafts con- tents, gardens and woodland. It was opened to the public in 2015. The speaker was Mr Ernest Miller a friend and neighbour of Donald and Anne which enable him to give a personal insight into Stoneywell and the fam- ily. The Rev. Cynthia led us in a Lent Meditation on 15th March which includ- ed hymns, prayers and readings. Thankyou Cynthia.

“A Child on Loan” a poem by – Edgar Guest

“I’ll lend to you for a little time, A child of mine,” God said, “For you to love while he lives And mourn for when he’s dead.”

“It may be one or seven years Or twenty-one or three, But will you till I call him back, Take care of him for me?”

“He’ll bring his charms to gladden you And should his stay be brief, You’ll have these precious memories To comfort you through grief.”

“I cannot promise he will stay Since all from earth return. But there are lessons taught down there I want this child to learn.”

“I’ve looked this world over, In my search for teachers true. In the crowds of this great land, I have selected you.”

“Now will you give him all your love Not think the labour vain, Nor hate me when I come to call To take him back again?”

I fancied what I heard them say, “Dear Lord, Thy will be done. For all the joy Thy child shall bring, the risk of grief we’ll run.

We’ll shelter him with tenderness, we’ll love him while we may, And for the happiness we’ve known, forever grateful stay.

But should the angels call for him, sooner than we’ve planned, We’ll brave the bitter grief that comes and try to understand.”

The words can easily be changed to reflect either a Girl or a Boy Page 14

CAN YOU HELP? Collectors are desperately needed to help with the door to door Christian Aid collection 15th to 21st May. Just a few hours of your time will bring lasting change for communities living in conflict, fear and poverty. If we all did a bit we could make such a difference. Last year the churches in Shepshed collected just over £2,700 from the house to house collection and the Cake Stall. A lot of the roads are not being collected this year, so we need more help. You could collect with a friend? A list will be at the back of church if you want to volunteer. Roads not covered include : Conway Drive, Loughborough Road, Oakley Close, Manor Gardens, Countrymans Way, Field Avenue, Britannia Street, Church Gate and Street, Highfields Close, Nursery Close, Pick Street, Factory Road, Piper Close, Purbeck Avenue, Queen Street, Wortley Close plus many more. We are also holding a Market Cake Stall in Shepshed on Friday 20th May. If you could help on the stall or make cakes and bring them to the stall, if wet it will be at Christchurch Methodist or help on the stall, just let us know. Collections at Asda on Saturday 21st May – can you collect for an hour or two? Please let me know if you can.

A Perfect World? Have you ever thought how nice it would be to have a perfect world? ● a world in which the sun always shines during the day and there is rain in the night ● where the grass is always green (with no weeds) – and it doesn’t keep growing so that you don’t need to keep cutting it. ● a world in which every loves one another and there are no wars, or even family or neighbourly disputes ● where nobody is ever ill and nobody dies ● a world in which everybody has the same amount of money; and nobody is richer than anybody else and nobody poorer. Sounds wonderful! Garden of Eden stuff! But would it really be that wonderful? What would be the point of life without challenges, without free will to make decisions and to live with the consequences? In that perfect world, we would not need to care about one another because there would be no problems. We would not need to strive to improve ourselves or to help our children. There would be no need for education because we would not need to learn. There would be no need for politicians (Maybe that’s a good thing!). Try for yourselves to imagine that perfect world. I’m not sure that the world I’ve just described would really be a perfect world. To live in that world, we might just as well be robots without heart or mind. No need to be nice to one another, no need to build community. One of the big questions that we Christians are challenged with is ‘Why does God allow suffering?’ and it’s a question that we struggle to answer. Someone once asked an ex Vicar of mine many years ago ‘Why did God make people?’ Good question I think, and one I ask myself frequently when I’m having a bad day and people are being difficult. His answer was ‘God made people because God is love and he wanted people to love him’. Of course, if he’d programmed them to love him automatically then it wouldn’t have been real love. Real love has to be given freely, and it has to be sacrificial, as Jesus taught us. I always tell people that ‘I don’t do pain’, which isn’t strictly true of course because there have been times when I’ve known what it’s like to feel pain; maybe that’s important because if I didn’t know pain, then I

Page 20

wouldn’t be able to empathise with those who suffer continually as I know some people do. I have to say that I am filled with admiration for those people who do suffer, who struggle to walk or to get about, and the way in which some people manage to turn their suffering into a challenge and a daily task. It would be lovely to live in a world where there is no pain, but God decided to give us free will and that free will brought about an imperfect world. I’m glad that we’ve got free will and I thank God for it. He has also given us the opportunity to use that free will, together with His Grace, to turn things around and to do our little bit to make the world better for those around us. This article was previously published in Christchurch Methodist Church Contact Magazine March-April 2016 Parish Magazine 40 Years Ago SUNDAY, the 13th June 1976 I wonder how many people in our congregation remember the above date and the Occasion? This day was Trinity Sunday, and the Golden Jubilee of the re-founding of Leicester Diocese.

On that beautiful Sunday morning, services at 264 churches in the County, including our own, were cancelled as their members congregated at Leicester City Football Ground (Filbert Street), to celebrate the Holy Eucharist. For me, it was a wonderful, and moving experience, as more than 14,000 Christians together shared the bread and wine, exchanged the peace, and joined in singing the well-loved hymns.

To us, seated high in the ‘Stands’, people below looked very small, but our yes were focused on the centre of the pitch. Here, beneath an ornate canopy, was the Altar, draped in a gold cloth, and upon which stood two tall candlesticks. The candles 4ft high, were lit by gas cylinder beneath the Altar, and they could be seen by everyone in the ground.

A procession of Church dignitaries, led by the Cross bearer and Choir, was impressive; it included the archdeacons of Leicester and Loughborough, the Provost, the Bishop of Leicester and his Assistant Bishops, and finally the Archbishop of Canterbury, who was greeted with great applause by the delighted crowds. He later preached an uplifting, and memorable sermon.

The day was rather special for St Botolph’s, as DC was asked by the Rev. Michael Cole, (Our former Curate), to design and produce the Candlesticks, whilst Linda Ball gave assistance with publicity, and the ‘Order of Service’. I hope this will bring back memories too, for others who were there. Derek Carr

ST JAMES' MOTHERS' UNION REPORT The last few months have been a busy time for members of the Oaks Mothers Union. February - Janet and I joined other Branch Leaders at the Akeley* East Deanery Mothers’ Union meeting at Emmanuel Church, Loughborough. We also attended the Leicester Diocesan Mothers’ Union Council meeting at St Mary Magdalen Church, Knighton with guest speaker Bishop Christopher Boyle. March – Members were welcomed to the Women’s World Day of Prayer (interdenominational) service at St Botolph’s Church, Shepshed. Janet Quenby took the part of Yamilka (an adult woman carrying a kitchen bowl full of provisions) and Rosemary Kirkland read a lesson from the New Testament. We were invited too, to Christ Church Mothers’ Union, in Akeley South Deanery for their 81st Anniversary Birthday Tea. After a short worship we listened to a talk on Food Banks by Noreen Mewies, who is Manager of the Ashby Food Bank and MU member. We joined Hathern Mothers’ Union at their Holy Week Service at the Church of St Peter & St Paul in the Akeley East Deanery. The afternoon concluded with good fellowship and a lovely tea. On Monday 4th of April at 2:30 pm we will be attending the Akeley East Deanery Lady Day service at Emmanuel with St Mary’s Loughborough and taking our St James Mothers’ Union banner with us to the event (see photo above). Our next meeting of the Oaks Mothers’ Union is Monday 18th April at 2:30 pm in the Oaks Storer Hall which is Communion with Rev Ed Bampton and enrolment. Plus a Bring and Buy followed by refreshments. We send our love to member Mavis Grainger who last month underwent major Heart surgery and now recovering at home. We pray that she will soon be well and back at meetings with us.

* Akeley – The ancient Oakley Wood which lies just north of Shepshed is the famous wood of Akle. This wood gave the name of the three deaneries of Akeley East, Akeley South and Akeley West.
