Located on US Dept of Interior, Bureau of Reclamation parcels: #25230-00-911, #25233-00-926, & #25262-00-905 of which the only parcel effected is #25262-00-905 where the Estes Park Gun & Archery Club established a trap range in 1980. This land is leased by the Estes Valley Recreation and Park District to provide a recreational shooting area. Common Point Shooting Range, since 1970, has been operated and managed under contract by the renter, Estes Park Gun & Archery Club, a non-profit corporation. (Currently the three parcels are in a land transfer negotiation with Federal Lands to Parks and Estes Valley Recreation & Park District.) • Trapshooting, a clay target is hurled forward into the air, away from the firing line. In order to simulate the unpredictable flight patterns of birds taking wing, the targets are sprung out of the trap house at various angles and in various directions. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) through their manual, “Best Management Practices for Lead at Outdoor Shooting Range” developed by EPA Region 2 with other agencies are providing a view of how lead shot is regulated. We are well aware that commercial interests and unfounded beliefs exist and continue to hold sway over those who refuse to look for or to face facts and accept facts, but we also appreciate that we are (and have always been) speaking to very few people. Anyone in any field, unfortunately, who strives to discover and to present the unvarnished facts, will be speaking to very few people. The majority comes sluggishly over time to acceot facts, preferring stubbornly to be influenced and pushed by that which is popular, and popularly believed. We do note with considerable satisfaction that certain sharp operators who made a fortune by exploiting the gullibility and ignorance of so many in the “martial arts” by insisting on the nonsense that “ground work is crucial in self-defense, and all engagements inevitably go to the ground” appear to be subtly but steadily altering their tune to accommodate the emerging truth that had to come (and has come) discrediting this stupid, dangerous, and inaccurate notion.

E d i t o r i a l What about the rest of your life? WE would guess that the majority of people who first come to the martial arts are between the ages of around fifteen and 25 years. Overwhelmingly, those who do commence training in a martial art do so for self-defense. The mystique of the Asian systems — somewhat diminished from that which it once was in the 1960’s and 70’s, but still present — accounts for some of the attraction, but by and large when a young man enrolls in a school teaching a martial art it is his desire to learn how to defend himself well. Most drop out of training within their first few weeks or months of enrollment. Only the smallest percentage of those who enroll stay with it for a year or more. Practically no one (compared to all of those who begin training) train to black belt first degree — or equivalent — proficiency. And of those who do earn a black belt, fewer still fully develop the grade, or remain in training on a permanent, ongoing basis, for life. The commercialization of martial arts in this Country has of course seen standards and requirements for grading drop enormously.

Izaak Walton League of America 14708 Mount Olive Road Post Office Box 366 , Centreville, VA 20122-0366 Newsletter Volume 51, Number 3 May, June and July 2013 NRA Three-Gun Match – Saturday, July 13th 10 AM to 12 Noon at the Rifle-Pistol Range With the chapter’s permission, the NRA will sponsor and run a .22 caliber rimfire/ 12 gauge shotgun three-gun match at the chapter’s Rifle-Pistol Range the morning of the chapter picnic, Saturday, July 13th from 10 AM to 12 Noon. The match will be open (no fees) only to chapter members and their guests. The NRA will provide the firearms and ammunition, reactive steel targets, safety officials, and judges. Each participant will shoot five rounds of 12 gauge shotgun number 8 pellets at five reactive steel targets at 15 yards, five rounds of .22 caliber rimfire from an AR-15 style rifle at steel targets at 25 yards, and up to ten rounds of .22 caliber rimfire from a semi-automatic pistol at 10 yards. The order of shooting will be rifle, shotgun, and then pistol. The participants will move from one firing station to another. They will not shoot while moving and the firearms will stay at their respective stations. There will be no drawing of firearms from holsters. Scoring will be based on hitting (and moving) the steel reactive targets and the elapsed time used by each shooter. With limited ammunition and the need to hit the targets to score, accuracy is more important than speed. This match will close the Rifle-Pistol Range on Saturday morning, July 13th.
