I am very happy to see that Samarpan, the Hindu Samaj Temple and Cultural Center’s Newslet- ter/magazine is being revived. Samarpan will help facilitate the accomplishment of the Temple and Cultural Center’s stated threefold goals: a) To enhance knowledge of Hindu Religion and Indian Cul- ture. b) To make the practice of Hindu Religion and Culture accessible to all in the community. c) To advance the appreciation of Indian culture in the larger community. Signification Le yantra est un dessin géométrique destiné à servir de support pour la méditation. Ils sont chargés d'une sagesse et d'une connaissance en vue de faciliter la compréhen- sion et l'intégration des mécanismes de l'Univers. "Yantra" vient du sanskrit et signifierait "substenter, intégrer, reconnaître..." Un yantra est facilement reconnaissable par la présence d'un carré et de ses 4 portes cardinales. Le carré symbolise la terre, l'incarnation, la stabilité et l'enracinement. Les 4 portes sont en relation avec les 4 directions et les 4 océans cosmiques de la Tradition hindouïste qui sont : l'océan de Dharma (le devoir), l'océan de d'Artha ( la richesse), l'océan de Kama ( la félicité) et l'océan de Moksha ( la délivrance). Les yantras peuvent être dessinés sur du papier, ou réalisés avec du sable coloré, gravés sur bois, métal..., ou peints sur du tissu, de la toile. Les yantras qui servent à des rituels sont brûlés pour ceux qui sont en papier; ou balayés et rendus à l'eau d'une rivière s'ils sont en poudres colorées. Pitchford California Institute of Integral Studies Saybrook University San Francisco, CA, USA San Francisco, CA, USA This article utilizes the example of the Aghori, with their radical and unique perspective on death, as a challenge to the Western world to live an authentic, present life by maintaining awareness of mortality. Specifically, three main themes are explored: first, a theoretical engagement of the concept of death based on the (Western) philosophy of existentialism, second, a review of the historical origins and philosophy of the Aghori sect, and third, a depiction of the Aghoris as a living example of vigorously accepting death as an inevitability of life. -
