Today Arezzo is one of the most interesting city of Tuscany.

In the year 1200 the high growth of the city brought the citizens to build new walls, public buildings and house-towers. When it became a ghibelline commune, Arezzo expanded its control on a wide territory of the surrounding hills. It fighted against the big closed cities such as Siena and Perugia, but it was defeated by the guelph city of Florence in the know battle of Campaldino in 1289. The medicean rule (1434/1569) and the domination of the family Lorena (1737/1859) were very negative experiences.

In 1560 the grand duke Cosimo declared the almost total destruction of the city. During 1500 Giorgio Vasari dominated the XVI Century: architect, painter, art historiographer, councillor and arbiter of the artistic life in Tuscany.
