Why this title you are probably asking. Well honestly, it’s be- cause of what I just experienced and observed last month while reviewing The 48th Grammy events in L.A., the Gospel Her- itage Conference in Houston and the star-studded 31st Stellar Awards in Vegas. These shows hosted the most diverse group of at- tendees I’ve ever seen. It’s also because of the realities of life that occur without discrimination, even to those who know the Bread of Life. Come closer. Every year the Stellar Awards boasts more and more famous folks who are not necessarily associated with ‘the church’ or gospel music, but actually do love gospel music and are Christians. This powerful music has made the most unsuspecting folks jump to their feet with exhilaration. Wendy Raquel Robinson (The Game), Iyanla (Fix my Life) Vazant and LaToya Luckett (former Destiny’s Child) were as thrilled walking the Stellar Awards red carpet as they would have been on The Academy Awards carpet. When presidential candidate Hillary Clinton appeared at our Radio Announcer’s Showcase Satur- day morning and quoted lyrics to “is Eye is on the Sparrow” I about fell out my seat. THEE Clive Davis hanging out with Gospel Gram- my nominees at the Green Room area and granting interviews to gospel announcers was pretty overwhelming. In Houston, U.S Con- gressmen and the Mayor all dropped into the Gospel Heritage con- ference to get their worship on. Major television station staff came to provide daily coverage from the event. That alone brought in the curious and interested worshippers from others not usually exposed to black gospel and worship music. Gospel Artists have become fiscally astute as entrepreneurs and fig- uring out that they are as marketable and admired as a “Kardashian” or the Olsen Twins. Thus you can now purchase Lonnie Hunter’s #getitdone Men’s Wear, Dorinda Clark Cole’s Rose Collection, Vick- ie Winan’s Jewelry Creations and Lexi’s hair extensions at LexiStyle. These artists are drawing us beyond the music to the places that we also frequent. As they realized their magnetism, the enemy has also figured out how to subject them to the same woes that gnaw at unbe- lievers who don’t know to surrender their issues to God. This week, Israel Houghton’s FB page revealed the end of a 20 year marriage; Richard Smallwood confessed struggling with Depression for over 30 years and the ambassador Dr. Bobby Jones 75+, revealed hurt from his recent BET Show cancellation. All of these are everyday human emotions, experiences and challenges. The catch is that they hid their feelings and life events because they were ashamed and feared what would be said about them because of their success in gospel music. This is the dichotomy that comes from being ‘in the world’, but ‘not of it’. The public scrutiny and expectation to do “et- ter”gnaws at those with higher platforms, but it doesn’t change life’s realities. BUT GOD!! He is still able to keep us from falling and to present us faultless before His Presence with great joy. They, like we, can get back up again, look to the Hills from whence cometh their help and STAND. I hear the Lord saying, “f I be lifted up, I’ll (do the real) drawing of All Men…unto Me” May Peace be Your Journey [email protected] holla!

Reverend Thomas James (T. J.) Patterson, Jr., is the second child of T. J. Patterson, Sr., and the late Bobbie Gean Patter- son of Lubbock, Texas. He is happily married to the love of his life, Ursula Patterson, and the father of two wonderful children, Thomas III and Lauren Elise. Reverend Patterson has a passion for serving God and caring for God’s people. This passion has been developing over his life. As a youth and young adult, Reverend Patterson was active in his church, school and community. He accepted Christ at an early age at the Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, in Lubbock, Texas. He graduated from Paul Lawrence Dun- bar-Struggs High School with honors in the top 10% of his Rev. & Sis. Thomas James (T.J.) Patterson class in 1979. Reverend Patterson matriculated to North Texas State University in Denton, Texas, and earned a Bach- elor of Arts Degree in Political Science. Reverend Patterson furthered his education in pursuit of his career goal to be an attorney. In May 1990, he received a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the Thurgood Marshall School of Law on the campus of Texas Southern University in Houston, Texas. During law school, he continued his service in ministry at the Windsor Village United Methodist Church where Reverend Patterson served as a youth leader and was the organizer and leader of the Boys Rites of Passage Program, a mentoring program for boys in 7th through 12th grades. In 1993, Reverend Patterson moved to Austin, Texas to serve on the legislative staff of State Senator Rodney Ellis. In 1994, Reverend Patterson became an Assistant Attorney General and Chief of the Civil Enforcement Section of the Financial Crimes Division of the Texas Attorney General’s Office. While living in Austin, Reverend Patterson met his lovely wife and they joined the Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor A.W.A Mays. Reverend Patterson organized and led the Boys Rites of Passage Program, a mentoring program for boys 8 through 18 years of age. He also served as a planner and instructor for Mount Sinai’s Men and Boys Retreat and as leader of the Mount Sinai Legal Ministry. In 1996, Reverend Patterson was ordained by the Mount Sinai Church to serve as a deacon. Additionally, he was a member of the Junior Brotherhood and the Brotherhood and served as a teacher for the ministries. In 2001, Reverend Patterson accepted his call to preach God’s Word and preached his first sermon in July of that year. As an associate minister, Reverend Patterson enjoyed preaching on Sunday mornings at a local nursing home. In 2001, God opened doors and granted favor for Reverend Patterson and his family to move to Fort Worth, Texas, where he became the first African-American to serve as a Senior Assistant City Attorney in the history of the city’s law department. While living in the Metroplex, Reverend Patterson joined and became an active member of the Cornerstone Baptist Church in Arlington, Texas. While serving at the Cornerstone Church, Reverend Patterson was the teacher for the teenage boys Sunday School class and a regular chaperone of the Children’s Choir. Reverend Patterson organized and led the Legal Ministry and assisted in the planning of the boys mentoring program. He was a faithful member of the Men’s Early Morning Prayer Group and assigned to preach to the children during the Children’s Church service. He was also an active member of the Faith Ministry, an evangelism and outreach ministry for the Cornerstone Church. In 2007, God moved Reverend Patterson and his family to the Bethlehem Baptist Church in Mansfield, Texas, under the leadership of Reverend Dr. Michael A. Evans, Pastor. At Bethlehem Baptist Church, Reverend Patterson served as an instructor for the youth Bible study and as a youth ministry instructor. There are times when the severity of our struggle is so overwhelming; we begin to question our relationship with God. Once we have prayed and entreated others to pray, Amen” has been declared and the situation has not changed, we tend to panic, and think God has abandoned us. So before you start falling apart and asking why me? I hear the word declaring in 1st Corinthians 10:13- No temptation or trial has overtaken you except what is com- mon to mankind. And God is faith- ful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can endure it. Child of God, sometimes our faith is “incarcerated” by the limitations of our human frailty; we can’t believe no farther than we can see, we can’t trust no farther than we can touch, and our faith is only as strong as the facts. Beloved, sometimes the duration of our dilemma is designed to fortify our faith. Delayed does not mean denied! The woman with the issue of blood described in the 5th chap- ter of Mark, had been dealing with this illness for twelve long years. Her medical expenses had left her financially bankrupt, alienation, be- cause of the stigma of her ailment, had left her socially bankrupt, but it was determination driven by des- peration that brought deliverance. Sometimes it’s not until the trap door falls out of rock bottom, that our faith kicks in. This woman vio- lated the Mosaic Law, according to Leviticus 15:25-30 she wasn’t even supposed to be in a public place, much less trying to touch a Rabbi, but it was this kind of radical faith that initiated her healing. Beloved don’t allow the duration of your struggle to cause your faith to fail. “Delayed does not mean denied!” 2010 E.
