CONCERNED ABOUT Risky Cough Medicines for Kids?

How to Calm a Cough—Safely A clear, easy-to-follow method for everyone!

by PEARLYN GOODMAN-HERRICK, ND, DHANP

Anywhere you go during the winter season, you’re likely to hear someone coughing and hacking. Although an acute cough is not always serious, it often sounds terrible! Coughs can also be painful, disrupt sleep, linger on for weeks, and generally wear the sufferer out. And croup, whooping cough, and allergic coughs may even be life- threatening on occasion, especially for very young children.

The Canadian Academy of Homeopathy And the Illinois Homeopathic Medical Association PRESENT Pure Homeopathy with Dr. André Saine Two Courses—Montreal—Spring 2009

Course I: Essentials of Acute and Chronic Prescribing—May 29–June 4 Provides excellent training in acute and chronic prescribing, with methodical instruction in case taking and analysis, prescription, and follow-up. Ideally suited for practitioners wanting to achieve mastery in homeopathy. Live case-taking and analysis vividly illustrate the material. Taught by Dr. Saine for 18 years at the NCH and described by many as an essential prerequisite for successful practice. Past evaluations rated this course 10/10 on all points by 100% of attendees, including a medical practitioner with 25 years of experience in homeopathy! Course II: Illustrated Comparative Materia Medica Pura—June 8–12 Compares and contrasts remedies with a multitude of vivid case illustrations making the remedies easier to grasp. Dr. Saine’s exhaustive research in old journals has unearthed many important symptoms from original provings and cured cases of well and lesser-known remedies. Experienced practitioners gave this course a standing ovation in Germany, 2008 and many have claimed increased clinical success resulting from the course. A live case with analysis will aso be taken mid-week. TESTIMONIAL “Effective homeopathic training is a rarity in today’s world of seminars. In André Saine’s course at the NCH Summer School, experienced practitioners who had studied with various teachers reported that they finally found what was missing to be more successful in their practices. I highly recommend anyone who wants to practice homeopathy effectively to take this course.” —Stephen Messer, ND, Former Dean, NCH Summer School These two courses are offered to physicians and other primary contact health care practitioners and students of these disciplines. Homeopathic Cough Medicines Safe Solutions for Kids & Adults

by GEORGE GUESS, MD, DHt

The homeopathic treatment of coughs, while often rapidly effective, demands very careful symptom observation. It is best to resist the impulse to take “something” as soon as a cough becomes troublesome and, instead, to patiently take note of the distinguishing characteristics of the cough in order to choose the best possible homeopathic medicine. Since many of the descriptions of our homeopathic cough medicines sound similar, careful symptom selection is critical to success. Good home care is adequate for most coughs. But if coughing is accompanied by high fever, chest pain, or bloody spu- tum, or if it is especially severe, associated with intense systemic symptoms, or is last- ing longer than a week or so, it is best to seek medical advice.

Commonly indicated remedies The following homeopathic medicines are frequently indicated for uncomplicated acute coughs. Once the medicine has been selected, try taking it in the 30c (or X) potency, one dose every three to four hours until clear improvement is noted, usually within 12–24 hours. If the remedy hasn’t helped within that time frame, try a different remedy. Bryonia (wild hops). This remedy cor- responds to a dry cough with a sore chest and stitching pains when coughing and moving. The signature characteristic of Bryonia is aggravation from motion, even slight movements. Patients will usually hold the chest when coughing, to splint it. The cough may also be worse after eating or drinking, on entering a warm room, and after a deep breath. Headaches from cough or motion may occur. The pains are better from pressure. The patient is often thirsty, irritable, and wanting to be alone. Nux vomica (poison nut). When head colds descend to the chest and produce coughing that is typically dry and teasing, consider this remedy. Exposure to dry, cold weather aggravates. The cough is often worse after eating and better from warm drinks. Almost always the patient is very chilly; chills result from motion and

Natural Cough Syrups For milder coughs, natural cough syrups can help. A Journal from Africa News from the Homeopathy AIDS Project in Tanzania by JEREMY SHERR

Renowned homeopath Jeremy Sherr is in Tanzania, Africa, setting up a homeopathy clinic. Over the last 3 months, he and his host, homeopath Sigsbert Rwegasira, have treated more than 100 AIDS patients. Jeremy is especially interested in discovering if, from the homeopathic point of view, AIDS is an “epidemic” and if so, then identifying the “genus epidemicus” —the remedy or group of remedies that will help the most people.* The work is part of a larger project being developed in partnership with an established homeopathy clinic in Tanzania. In addition to seeing patients, they hope to do research and are in the early stages of creating a protocol. They are also helping to open The Tanzanian School of Homeopathy. Here are excerpts from Jeremy’s Journal from Africa, selected by Tina Quirk, MS, PCH, project manager for the Homeopathy AIDS Project. (Some entries have been edited/abridged for Homeopathy Today.)
