This book opens with Sookie Stackhouse finding the dead body of Lafayette in the backseat of Andy Bellefleur's car, which had been left at Merlotte's the night before. Sookie learns that her friend had recently attended a local sex party. She thinks the members of that group might know something about her friend's murder so she starts "listening" to people's thoughts by using her special mind reading talent while working at the local bar. In the meantime, Bill Compton, Sookie's vampire boyfriend, informs her that they have been summoned by Eric Northman. As a way to get Eric's attention, a known as Callisto attacks Sookie on their way to Fangtasia, Eric's vampire bar. Sookie's wounds are poisoned, and she is healed by a combination of Dr. Ludwig's special treatment, and blood drainings by Eric, Pam, Chow, and Bill. Sookie is later given a fresh transfusion of human blood. [2] Eric informs Bill and Sookie that they need to go to Dallas to help the local vampire leader, Stan Davis, to find his missing "brother," Farrell, who has not returned to Davis' nest for five days. Back in Bon Temps, Sookie avoids Bill for several weeks during which Bill "dates" Portia Bellefleur, who is trying to find out more about the sex club in an effort to clear her brother Andy of any connection to the murder. After seeing Sookie at a football game with Tara, Benedict "Eggs" Talley (Tara's fiancé), and JB du Rone (another male friend), Bill follows Sookie home and they passionately (and violently) reconcile. The next day, Sookie is invited to a secret sex party organized by Mike Spencer. Afraid to go alone, Sookie asks Eric to accompany her as Bill is out of town. At the sex party, Sookie is surprised to see her friend Tara and Eggs and learns that Mike and Tom Hardaway murdered Lafayette. The party is interrupted when Bill, Andy Bellefleur, Sam (in collie form), and the maenad Callisto gather in front of the house. The maenad enjoys the drunkenness and lust of the party participants and eventually kills Mike, Tom and his wife, and another local named Jan. Eggs & Andy, under the maenad's spell, recall nothing of the incident - Tara is the only non-supernatural present with any recollection of the events (she was hidden and thus did not fall under the maenad's spell). Bill and Eric burn the house, and Eric glamours Tara so that she will not be able to remember what happened at the sex party. See also. Characters of The Southern Vampire Mysteries Characters of True Blood. Television adaptation. Living Dead in Dallas has been adapted by HBO into a television series called True Blood. Its storyline forms the basis of True Blood's second season. Its first episode aired on June 14, 2009. Although the main characters and story lines are the same, there are significant differences between the book and the series, most notably: In the series, Jason joins the Fellowship of the Sun, forming a major story arc that is very different from his minor role in the novel. In the book, Jason stays in Bon Temps, dating a girl called Liz Barrett. Lafayette Reynolds is not killed, but rather Miss Jeanette (a character exclusive to the series) is found murdered. Instead, Eric takes Lafayette prisoner for dealing V and to question about Eddie's disappearance. Lafayette is held in the basement of Fangtasia. In the series, Eric's maker is Godric, to whom Eric maintains a deep bond of loyalty and devotion. Godric, while still like Godfrey (see above) a self-tortured renouncer who wishes to meet the sun, is not portrayed as an evil child killer but rather as a compassionate, enlightened sheriff of his area. Bill's maker Lorena is reintroduced. Bill tries to teach his new progeny, Jessica, how to be a good vampire. Jessica and Hoyt (whose character is very different in the series) start a romantic relationship. Season 2 sees the introduction of Sophie- Anne Leclerq, Queen of Louisiana, whereas she does not appear in novel 2, instead appearing in a later book. Callisto, the maenad, is introduced as "Maryanne Forrester." Maryann is played by actress Michelle Forbes. The entire plotline involving the maenad is drastically different in the series from that portrayed in the book. This includes her involvement in the Bon Temps community, her relationship with Tara, and her drive to kill . Luna is not involved in rescuing Sookie from the Fellowship and no werewolves make an appearance in Dallas. A sub-plot involving Sam's romantic relationship with another shapeshifter is exclusive to the TV series. Related Research Articles. Front Blurb [ edit | edit source ] "Cocktail waitress Sookie Stackhouse isn't having much fun lately. In fact, a coworker of hers ends up murdered and no one seems to care. But when she comes face to face with a beastly creature that gives her a poisonous and painful lashing, help from vampires gives her the chance to change things a little." Chapter Summary [ edit | edit source ] Chapter One [ edit | edit source ] The books opens with Sookie working the night shift at the bar Merlotte's, and with a drunken Andy Bellefleur. After Sookie calls Andy's sister Portia Bellefleur to come drive him home, Bill Compton arrives in the bar to greet Sookie. Sookie and the other bar patrons chat briefly with the vampire when Portia arrives to take her brother home. After an awkward exchange between Portia and Bill (Portia does not like vampires), Portia allows Bill to take Andy to the car. The siblings soon leave Merlotte's, and Andy's car stays parked in the bar's parking lot. The next day Sookie arrives at work for the lunch shift, and finds Andy's car with the door ajar. Not wanting the car to lose its battery charge, Sookie gets out of her car to push the door closed. When the door refuses to close, Sookie opens it to see why. What she finds is the dead body of Lafayette Reynolds, the short order cook at Merlotte's. Sam calls the police after Sookie tearfully tells him what she saw. After the police question her, we find out about the secretive and dodgy "sex parties" Lafayette had been attending. We also know that whoever murdered Lafayette had sex with him or raped him. Chapter Two [ edit | edit source ] Sookie leaves the bar after her shift is over to go home and get ready for the drive to Fangtasia with Bill, for Eric Northman,he had a new assignment for the couple. On the drive to Shreveport, Bill informs Sookie that he just bought a small shopping center in Bon Temps, and that if she ever needs clothes, food, or a haircut she is to go there since he has instructed the owners of the shops to let her use their services for free. Furious at being portrayed as a bought woman, Sookie yells at Bill. When the car stalls, Sookie gets out and storms into the woods to get away from Bill, and back to Bon Temps. Since both are being stubborn Bill goes the opposite direction to find a mechanic instead of following Sookie. After walking for a short while, Sookie is greeted by feral but beautiful woman in ragged clothes with a snarling razorback hog. The woman tells Sookie that she is a maenad, and that she has a message for Eric Northman. Sensing danger Sookie turns to run away but the maenad claws at Sookie's back leaving deep and long gashes. The wounds where so painful that Sookie could barely crawl. When she hears Bill sifting through the woods to find her she calls out to him, and he comes to her aid, picks her up, places her in the fixed car, and takes her to Shreveport. Once at Fangtasia, Eric gets Dr. Ludwig (a supernatural) healer to tend to Sookie. The doctor tells Sookie that she needs a tranfusion; for the wounds are poison. Soon after the healer begins her work, Sookie tells Eric of the maenad and passes out. Chapter Three [ edit | edit source ] Sookie wakes up in Eric's office with Pam sitting next to her. Pam informs Sookie on the success of the operation, and the two women have a brief conversation. Sookie showers and puts on fresh clothes; when she is finished, she is introduced to Chow, the new bartender at Fangtasia. After thanking the vampires involved with the transfusion, Eric tells Sookie that he has "loaned" her out to the Area 6 vampires in Dallas, Texas. Sookie agrees to go only if Bill comes with her, Eric in turn agrees to her conditions. After the brief meeting Sookie wonders out loud what the message was that the maenad was keen on giving. Chow then explains the history of , saying that they require offerings from people who serve alcohol and if a tribute is not given, the maenad could cause madness and massacre. On her next day at work, Sookie tells Sam Merlotte of the maenad, and her wounds. Sam becomes angry with the vampires for he feels this would not have happened to Sookie had she not associated herself with them. After her talk with Sam, Sookie, begins work only to be interrupted by Portia Bellefleur. Portia had come into the bar to ask Sookie for a favor on behalf of Andy. Portia tells Sookie that Andy is being accused of killing Lafayette, and that she wants Sookie to "listen in" on people to try and find the real culprit. The Bellefleurs have never been kind to Sookie, so as a result she gets angry at Portia's nerve and tells her that she will not help Andy, that anything she does to help solve Lafayette's murder will be for Lafayette. not Andy. Portia leaves the bar abruptly stating her dislike for Sookie in the process. After this exchange, Bill arrives at the bar to tell Sookie that they will be leaving for Dallas the next day. Bill takes Sookie home soon after and the two make love. Chapter Four [ edit | edit source ] The next evening Sookie arrives in Dallas. As she gets off the plane, she is approached by a priest. He is a small man and asks Sookie whether or not she needs help with her "situation". Sookie, who is frazzled by her first plane ride and preoccupied with the responsibility of getting Bill shipped off the plane safely, barely registers what the man is saying and doing. When the man follows her and persistently tries to get her attention, she begins to sense danger. When the "priest" sees Bill's coffin coming off the plane he abruptly grabs Sookie, and begins pulling her away. Though the airport is crowded, no one seems to realize that Sookie is being taken against her will. Trying to get away from her kidnapper Sookie digs her heels into the ground and calls out to the emerging Bill. The priest suddenly drops Sookie and runs as Bill chases him. After this strange encounter Sookie and Bill wonder how this man could know them, and why he had tried to take Sookie. Unable to reach a conclusion the two begin to take in the sites of Dallas. When they reach their destination Sookie is surprised to meet another telepath named Barry . Not wanting to "out" the boy against his will Sookie keeps this fact to herself. Once she and Bill are settled they meet a vampire in the lobby of the hotel named Isabel Beaumont . She informs them that she was sent to fetch them, so soon after they all pile into Isabel's car and drive to meet the sheriff of Dallas. When they arrive, Sookie and Bill meet Stan Davies the sheriff of Area 6. Stan explains what he wants of Sookie. A vampire named Farrell is missing from Stan's nest. Stan wants Sookie to question humans who may be involved in Farrell's disappearance and use her telepathy to find the truth. The first person they bring in is a young woman named Bethany, as Sookie questions Bethany she also digs in the girl's mind. After sifting through a lot of useless information, Sookie finds that Farrell was last seen going into the bathrooms (of a vampire bar called The Bat's Wing) with a "young" blond vampire and wasn't seen coming out. The next to be questioned is the bouncer of the bar. Sookie quickly realizes that someone has crudely erased the bouncer's memory. So he has no useful information. A vampire named Rachel is next to be questioned. She tells Stan that she did in fact see a blond and tattooed vampire and that she saw him talking to a mysterious human outside the bar. After Rachel leaves, Bill asks if the vampires have a computer and leaves the room to use the internet. While Bill is researching, Sookie searches many other brains, none of which have any further information. Bill returns with the blond vampire's name and history. His name is Godfrey and he is a known renouncer. He betrayed his fellow vampires to the Fellowship of the Sun . Living Dead In Dallas. Sookie lives in her ancestral home, which she inherits after her grandmother, Adele Stackhouse, is murdered in the first book. She has one sibling, her older brother Jason Stackhouse. In the sixth book, Definitely Dead, Sookie discovers she is part Faerie. Sookie has several Fae relatives, including twin cousins Claude Crane and. Games Creatures Play. by Charlaine Harris. Game on! Dead in Dixie. by Charlaine Harris. Publisher : Unknown Publisher Release : 2010 Pages : 614 ISBN : 9781616645571 Language : En, Es, Fr & De. The first three Sookie Stackhouse novels - with a new introduction by the author! DEAD UNTIL DARK Sookie Stackhouse is a cocktail waitress in Bon Temps, Louisiana. You can tell she doesn't get out much, and it's not because she isn't pretty. She is. It's just that, well, Sookie has this "disability:" she can read minds. And that doesn't make her too dateable. Then along comes Bill. He's tall, dark, handsome -- and Sookie can't hear a word he's thinking. Just the guy she's been waiting for all her life. But Bill has a disability of his own: he's a vampire with a seriously creepy crowd of friends. So when one of her coworkers is killed, Sookie fears she's next . . . LIVING DEAD IN DALLAS Sookie is on a streak of bad luck. First, she finds a body in the back seat of a car. Then she comes face to face with a beastly creature that gives her a painful and poisonous lashing. Enter the vampires, who graciously suck the poison from her veins -- like they don't enjoy it! Point is, they saved her life. So when one of them asks for a favor, she complies . . . and soon Sookie finds herself in Dallas, using her telepathic abilities to search for a missing vampire. There's just one condition: the vamps must behave, and let the humans involved go unharmed. Which is easier said than done. . . CLUB DEAD Sookie's vampire boyfriend, Bill, has been a little distant lately. In another state, distant. He's on a secret assignment for the vampire queen of Louisiana, and only his sinister and sexy boss Eric knows where to find him. Soon, Sookie is off to Jackson, Mississippi, to mingle with the über- underworld at Club Dead -- a dangerous little haunt where werewolves, shapeshifters, and vampires go to chill out and suck down some type O. But when Sookie finally finds Bill -- caught up in an act of serious betrayal -- she's not sure whether to save him . . . or sharpen some stakes. True Blood Boxed Set 2. by Charlaine Harris. Soulless and dead. Infected and infectious. Zombies. The epidemic of the living dead is stronger than ever in today’s pop-culture, but long before exotic viruses, biological warfare, and sinister military experiments brought the dead back to life in our cinemas and on our television screens, there were the dark spells and incantations of the ancient Egyptians, the Sumerians, and the Babylonians. Blending the historical with the modern, the biographical with the literary, the plants and animals with bacteria and viruses, the mythological with the horrifying true tales, The Zombie Book: The Encyclopedia of the Living Dead is a comprehensive resource to understanding, combating, and avoiding zombies. More than 250 entries cover everything from hit television shows, books, and movies, including The Walking Dead, World War Z and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, to zombies’ ignominious role in folklore and mythology, such as the Greek god Asclepius, ancient Voodoo religion, and the Native American Wendigo legend. The Zombie Book: The Encyclopedia of the Living Dead examines mad cow disease, the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918, the Centers for Disease Control preparing for the end of the world, and much, much more.
