Please allow me to begin today by acknowledging the traditional owners of the land upon which we meet today and their elders past and present. My name is , I’m the Take Pride Program Learn Earn Legend! Program Manager and I thank the committee for inviting me to represent the Take Pride Program at this important meeting. I have a prepared statement to read to you and I’m looking forward to your questions.

The Take Pride Program was established by the Northern Pride Club in 2008 to deliver Rugby League specific Development programs across the greater region. The organisation has evolved and grown since then to meet a demand for sports for development activity across the broader Far North , Cape York and Torres Strait region. The Take Pride Program operates on a ‘4 Pillar’ model, with activity and programs structured across the sectors of Education, Employment, Health & Wellbeing and Sporting Pathways.

To provide to you an immediate sense of the size and scope of our operations I would like to take you on a brief trip across our catchment area. As of 30 November, in 2012 the Take Pride Program has conducted a total of 295 school visits to 184 individual schools. In addition there were another 122 visits to 48 individual communities. With the exception of the schools in Charters Towers and , we visited every single school from Mt Isa in the west to Bowen in the south and north to Badu Island. We visited small remote communities such as Pentland, Prarie and Greenvale as well as Indigenous communities such as Aurukun, and Mapoon. Significantly as a result of these visits, the Program reached an audience of just under 30, 000 participants. Made up of • 17, 818 males • 11, 343 females • 3, 569 adults • 25, 592 children. And, • 14, 377 Indigenous Australians

Importantly our visits are not structured as ‘fly in – fly out’ generic sporting clinics, but are structured programs delivered in consultation with local stakeholders, be they School Principals and Teachers, Queensland Health and other State and Federal Departments, or local government and community leaders. I have copies of our Monthly Activity Report that I’m happy to provide to the Committee to provide further detail on each of the activities delivered during each visit and illustrate the length of each visit to specific communities.

Under our Education pillar we manage a DEEWR Learn Earn Legend! Contract, a Rugby League & Lifestyle Academy Program delivered in partnership with James Cook University with over 120 participants aged 12-18, coaching support to the Sports Academy at Djarragun College and mentoring participation in a number of accredited vocational programs with partners such as RTO, Skill360 Australia.

In addition to these formal activities, the Program delivers ‘Inspiration & Education’ speeches and activities as well as participation based rugby league activities at schools and communities.

Under our Employment Pillar we deliver Youth Mentoring and Employment Brokerage, Speed Careering, Employment Expos across schools and communities.

Under our Health Pill we deliver and participates in activities including the award winning ‘No Germs on Me’ program, Healthy Nutrition clinics designed to tackle the obesity epidemic and participation based sports clinics.

A key focus of the Take Pride Program is to provide sporting participation as well as high performance programs to people in remote and regional areas. Our Sporting Pathways pillar acts to provide opportunity to athletes and coaching and education to administrators and other sporting officials. The Program helped arrange and support the Torres Cup 2012 and has taken Intrust Super Cup games to MT Isa and Bamaga in the past 18 months.

Amongst the unique achievements of the Take Pride Program is the design and delivery of the first Reconciliation Action Plan ratified by Reconciliation Australia for a rugby league club (Northern Pride RLFC RAP 2010-11). The Take Pride Program has also been recognised as a finalist and won a number of national awards including the NRL One Community Award for Community Service in 2011 and our No Germs On Me Program was a finalist at the National Indigenous Health Awards this year.

The Take Pride Program has established a unique model for community engagement that that is particularly effective in indigenous communities. The number of visits we conduct, the length of each visit and the continuity of contact with participants are key features of the 4 Pillar Model. We receive the majority of our funding as well as a base to operate and the tools of the trade from the Northern Pride Rugby League Club itself with additional support from key private sector groups including Skytrans, Sea Swift and Westpac Bank as well as funding partners in Government, primarily DEEWR. The Take Pride Program is an example of a Rugby League Club funding a development organisation. The support of the football club has allowed us to achieve many of our strategic goals for the period 2012-15 and has allowed us to develop unique access into the lives of many young indigenous Australians across FNQ, Cape York and the Torres Strait. We desperately need more stable funding under each of our four pillars to turn this access into more stable and academically more rigorous development programs with adequate monitoring and evaluation. We have achieved fantastic outcomes using rugby league as the vehicle for profound positive change in communities and have provided the opportunity for yet more in the future. Finding the funding to support these opportunities is our number one strategic priority.
