The 25 Belgian early stage startups on December 2 represent the vibrant tech scene in . During our scale-up track on December 3; we welcome 25 high-growth scale-ups from Belgium & the , handpicked by our industry experts and international partner VCs. Illegally dumped trash is one of the main causes of irritation for citizens, and therefore a priority of the public administration. Little is known about why, how and when people illegally dump trash. Interviews with citizens who have been caught lead to no new insights, and only a small percentage or perpetrators is identi²ed. Ghent has the goal to become a Technology Capital in Europe. How do you want to achieve this? The City of Ghent will continue to invest in the digitization of the city services. In the upcoming years we will invest € 110 million. We don’t want to tackle all the challenges ourselves, we want to do this in close collaboration with the local IT start-ups. The local start-up ecosystem is already very strong in Ghent and we want to boost it even more by involving them in this story. In addition we want to support technological ecosystems such as BioTech, CleanTech, HealthTech and digital technology in their growth.

Ghent was declared scale-up epicentre in Belgium by Venturebeat a couple of years ago. How will Ghent stay on top of the list in the future?

The ecosystem in Ghent was formed a long time ago. The former social network Netlog was founded in 2006 in Ghent and that caused the beginning of a growing ecosystem. Since then a lot of innovative companies were formed and it only kept growing. At this moment Ghent is still the city with the most start-ups in Flanders. The City of Ghent invests in the tech ecosystem by creating a focal point for the tech ecosystem: The Krook and Wintercircus.

Why should an investor invest in companies in Ghent? Recent numbers have shown that start-ups and scale-ups from Ghent have raised the most capital in the last ²ve years in Flanders. Almost twice the amount of the number two on the list. The quality of the start-ups in Ghent is high and they focus on di¨erent technologies: HealthTech, MadTech, HrTech, etc. We also actively support AI4Growth, a community of AI stakeholders in Flanders that was founded in Ghent to incentivize AI projects in a meaningful way. We want to support the technology because of the positive impact on society and not because of the technology itself. Technology is the catalyst of a movement towards a more sustainable economy across all sectors.

What role does Deloitte play in building the start- and scale-ups ecosystem? At Deloitte, we aim to be an active contributor to the start- and scale-ups ecosystem, delivering value in close collaboration with other actors that play an important role in this vibrant community. From corporates to investors and governments to academia, we all share the same goals.

Everyone in the ecosystem works individually and together to support (technology) start-ups and scale-ups in their development. We all aspire to foster economic growth and build the businesses and employers of the future. We address a multitude of economic and societal challenges (e.g. Future of Mobility, sustainability) and drive innovation across industries, allowing traditional players to keep up with technological advances.

How does Deloitte help start-ups and scale-ups on their growth path? As a trusted advisor, Deloitte currently has four key means to deliver value to the start- and scale-up ecosystem. First, we connect scale-ups with our corporate clients seeking new sources of growth or ways to transform their business. We also selectively embed emerging technologies in our Digital O¨erings and establish go-to-market alliances. Through programmes such as Fast 50 (focused on mature companies) and Rising Star and our collaboration with The Big Score, we ensure that start- and scale-ups get the visibility and recognition they need to access clients, talent and capital. Lastly, we provide high-value expertise, helping with growth strategy, ²nancing, compliance, and more. One of the examples of how we share our know-how is through our Booster programme, allowing scale-ups to build a solid foundation to support growth whilst managing risks. 112 #THEBIGSCORE Deloitte has conducted a series of surveys since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. What was the outcome as to the impact on scale-ups on the one hand and investors on the other hand? We ²rst reached out to over 70 scale-ups to evaluate how they were being impacted by COVID-19 and what their response had been thus far. The survey revealed that while they continued to grow, their speed of growth had been impacted, it had almost halved. Not surprisingly the impact of the crisis on the growth trajectory depended on the sector they operate in with, for example, medtech remaining unscathed while the hospitality industry was heavily hit.

Seven out of ten scale-ups expressed con²dence that their business will successfully navigate the COVID-19 pandemic, and that they may come out stronger and continue or even accelerate their growth trajectory. However, the investors polled felt they were slightly too optimistic.

The investors stressed that scale-ups should stay the course, remain focused on why they exist, and avoid jumping on the COVID-19 bandwagon. They also expected valuations would have to be adjusted and that there might be delays to exiting their investments.

How do you see the evolution of the scale-ups scene in the next ²ve years? Scale-ups will continue to be an important source of growth for economies globally and in Belgium. They are the future of work and will o¨er the great job opportunities in the years to come. Globalisation and verticalisation are also becomingly increasingly important to engage customers and drive growth.

At Procter & Gamble we are focussed on being a positive force for the world (#ItsOurHome) – improving the environmental footprint of P&G and our consumers which is captured in our Ambition 2030 program. The recently launched 50litre home initiative, for which P&G is a founding member, focusses on the reduction of water usage in the home as a more and more precious resource. To drive ‘’responsible consumption’’ we focus on where our products have the most environmental impact guided using the principles of life cycle analysis. For cleaning products the ‘’in use’’ phase (use of energy and water in the cleaning task by consumers) is one of the biggest drivers of responsible consumption and we want to improve our measurement of these vectors in real consumers homes so we can further improve our products performance to help reduce energy and water consumption. Another area for improvement is more e¹cient transportation of our goods around the world. One of the driving initiatives is P&G’s collaboration with 4FOLD, providing foldable containers and thus massively reducing CO2 emission of (empty) container shipping. We need the help of the startup/scale up community to help us innovate in these areas, and our problem statements at The Big Score this year are linked to these areas. Accelerating Smart Port innovation collaboration The key challenge in building a smart port innovation ecosystem has been to get the fragmented, fast- paced and highly competitive port environment to adopt an open innovation approach and share their challenges with the smart port technology providers. Technology providers, in turn, have a hard time ²nding applications for their technology and getting access into the closed supply chain.

Here, port users’ challenges are listed and smart port application builders and users ²nd each other to co-ideate, co-develop and pilot smart port application ideas. In a ²rst stage, SPEED has gathered a ²rst batch of 39 smart port challenges from various European port actors. Currently, the platform is building awareness, use-case by use-case, event by event and webinar by webinar. To this end, we are actively engaging challenge owners, potential solution providers and other interested port users to take these challenges further in hackathons, use case webinars, scouting for pilots and tender processes.
