IMPS Form 1 0-900a 0MB No. 1024-001 a (Rev. 8/86) United States Department of the Interior National Park Service National Register of Historic Places Continuation Sheet TAYLOR MEMORIAL CHAPEL Section number _7__ Page J__ El Paso County, Colorado DESCRIPTION The Taylor Memorial Chapel is located northeast of Colorado Springs in the Black Forest area at an elevation of approximately 7250 feet. It is sited within a Ponderosa pine forest, and there is a dry ravine at the foot of the western edge of its courtyard. The ravine is slowly eroding, and a short wall has been built at the top of the ravine to stop visitors from getting too close to the edge. Walkways on the south side of the chapel have recently been paved with concrete, and lead to a rustic wood gate located in an archway at the western end of the courtyard wall. This walled courtyard, extending to the west from the chapel, is an integral part of the building's design. Landscaping within the courtyard includes a groundcover of pine needles and naruraul grasses, along with mature evergreen trees. t The chapel enjoys unimpeded views of Pikes Peak which rises above the valley beyond. It was built in 1929 as a memorial by prominent Colorado Springs resident Alice Bemis

    Series: Discovering Your Educational Community Resources Saving the Past for Our Future: Historic Sites Colorado #2 - Colorado Springs EDUO 9805 One semester Credit/Unit Instructor – Eric Thompson [email protected] Course Syllabus Course Description The purpose of this course is to provide teachers with the opportunity to relive history by touring landmarks of interest from the National Register of Historic Places and other identified local landmarks and museums in the Colorado Springs Area. Viewing and learning about these persevered sites can bring history alive and make learning more meaningful for classes at any grade level. Learning about the unique educational programs these historic sites provide can then be shared by each teacher with their particular school site and/or classroom in the way of fieldtrip experiences, cultural activities, and additional supplemental learning experiences that will enhance the curriculum of any grade level. Course Objectives In this course participants will have opportunity: 1. To learn what educational programs and other opportunities are available for their students at four outstanding historical sites. 2. To further their knowledge of local history as well as the histories of other community historic sites by participating in tours of the exhibits in the Pioneer Museum as well as participating in one of the walking tours. 3. To gain the knowledge in order to plan and teach meaningful history lessons and supplemental activities for their grade level. 4. To be able to provide field trip information to parent and staff and plan meaningful fieldtrips that enrich the curriculum of grade level taught. Steps to Completion 1. Participants will tour, at their convenience, the Pioneer Museum as well as complete a walking tour of their choice from a provided list.
