Introduction

Community first funding for the Great Lever ward has been in operation since 2011. Since its inception it has supported 10 Community projects in the local area which have benefited the local Community.

The following document will demonstrate:

Geographic profile

The Great Lever ward of is situated in the south of the Borough. The ward is bordered by Harper Green, , and .

Demographic profile

Resident Population

. Great lever Resident Population 2011: All People 14,467

. Great Lever has a total resident population of around 14,467 people and covers an area of 394 hectares.

Ethnicity

. Great Lever contains significantly larger numbers of people of Black or Minority Ethnic,(BME), origin than Bolton and . Around one-third of the population are from anon-White BME group, compared to 11% in Bolton and 9% in England.

. The largest BME group within Great Lever is people of Indian origin, who make up around 15% of the total population, compared to 6% in Bolton and 2% nationally. People Of Pakistani origin also make up around 14% of Great Lever, compared to 3% in Bolton and 2% nationally.

. There were also larger numbers of Other Asians, people of Mixed Ethnic origin and Black or Black British in Great Lever compared to local and national comparators, but no other minority ethnic group constituted more than 1% of the total population in Great Lever.

Religion

. Around half the population of Great Lever stated their religion was Christianity, compared to three quarters in Bolton and 72% in England & Wales.

. Around 1 in 5 of the population in Great Lever stated they were Muslim, (compared to7% in Bolton and 3% nationally). Furthermore around 8% in Great Lever stated their religion as Hinduism, (compared to 2% in Bolton and 1% nationally).

. Great Lever as a whole also demonstrated relatively high levels of religiosity with only7% of the population stating they had no religion, compared to 15% in England & Wales.

Community First panel members

The Community First panel for the Great Lever ward is made up of officers working in the local community and local residents. It was imperative that the panel members where actively involved in the local community and have the grounded knowledge of the local area and were aware of the key issues. This enabled the panel to highlight key needs of the local community, promote the grant to local existing groups and projects as well as new and emerging groups and projects.

The panel members include:

. Councillor Madeleine Murray- local elected member for Great lever Ward

. Shahla Holgeth- Great lever resident- Bolton Community college

. Olywyn Cunliffe- Maltby residents Association

. Angela Duffy- UCAN manager Irwell Valley Housing Association

. Shauna Morton- Neighbourhood Manager-Bolton at Home

. Chris wood- Community Development Officer-Bolton at Home

. Richard Haworth- Community First Trainee-Bolton at Home

All of the above panel members have been actively involved in identifying local needs, undertaking informal local consultations, promoting the community first fund in the local area and giving up their time and local expertise at the panel meetings. The panel also completed a local mapping exercise to look at existing projects and activities which were being delivered in the Great Lever ward. See appendices 1 attached.

Consultations and key priorities

Over the past 5 years extensive research and consultations have been undertook with residents in the Great lever Ward to highlight how they feel about living in the local area. Residents were consulted in a variety of settings, networks and forums such as:

. Community fun days

. Primary school open/community days

. Community researchers/surveys

. Local area planning meetings

. Various informal settings such as Community centres, social spaces and local places of worship

Local residents where asked what they wanted in their local area/community?

Common themes included:

. Stronger community with groups working together more cohesively in the local community.

. More provisions for children and teenagers in the local community.

. Nice clean, green environment for all the community to enjoy.

. Safer community and neighbourhood for local families to live grow up in.

Three main priorities which were identified for the Great Lever Ward from consultations, local research and from grounded knowledge from Community First Panel members living and working in the local community included:

. Priority 1 – Bringing Communities Together – Community Cohesion – This priority will focus on activities which bring different people together from Great lever ward who might not ordinarily meet. Examples could be intergenerational, cultural or local neighbourhood activities. The aim of this priority is to create situations in which people can meet in order to recognise common causes and interests.

. Priority 2 – Improving and Protecting the Environment – This priority aims to stimulate community action around improving the Great lever ward environment, both practically and in terms of forming or strengthening interests groups to address local environmental issues such as making the most of our green spaces.

. Priority 3 – Building the Social-Economic Prospects for people in the area – Increase confidence, support people into employment, learn new skills and reduce poverty.

Marketing and publicity In order to inform local groups and residents about the Community First fund we adopted different approaches to disseminate the information: . The panel members have actively promoted the Community first funding directly in the local area

. Information was placed on Bolton at Home and Bolton CVS regarding the fund.

. Community Development Officer actively promoted the fund in local community; disseminated information, and undertook presentations at local area Forums.

. Information was sent to local community groups, resident associations, sports clubs and community schools.

Projects we’ve funded in year 1 and 2 in Great lever

Year 1 Project Description Amount Bolton Community The grant funded Bolton community association to run a Association training programme for children from different religions, Training for the ethnicities and social backgrounds in the great lever ward that £2454.88 Future was run at the community gym at the nightingale centre. Mehmet Yesil Bolton Environmental The grant funded Bolton environmental enterprise to create Enterprise facilities for a pop up cinema in Great Lever that could move Bollywood Nights £982.39 between community centres/spaces and provide a meeting and Community point for all ages through a common interest of film. Film Club Gulnaz Parveen Raise the Youth The grant funded Raise the youth CIC ltd to set up an ‘SOS CIC Ltd drop in’ for young people aged 15-24 providing advice in Raise in Great employment, leisure, health, relationships, money, housing, £2500 Lever Drop In the law etc, advocacy, education, life skills and socialising. Bolton Community Leisure Trust First Steps into the The grant funded Bolton community leisure and trust to set Leisure at Bolton up a project called ‘First Steps into the Leisure at Bolton One’. One This project will give people from Great Lever the opportunity £2444.10 Anne Marie to gain valuable skills, which could lead to employment within Marshall the Leisure Industry.

Year 2 Upbeat Media The grant funded the group ‘Upbeat media’ to launch a Multimedia programme ‘multimedia Monday’s’ for young people in the Mondays community that wanted to try music technology, making £2400 Alex English videos and DJ workshops.

The grant funded the great lever voice project, The funds are The Great Lever being used to enable young people attend and access various Voice Project activities and programmes in a friendly homely place where £1560 SAFE they feel safe and wanted. Some of the programmes include Val Johnson awards, qualifications and life skills such as confidence building, motivation, food hygiene etc.

The pop in and learn project is an informal drop in social Pop In And Learn provision in the Heart of great lever. It provides a drop in Anne-Marie Giles every week and is open to all the local community who need £2000 support around employment, confidence building, advocacy, advice and guidance, life skills, arts, crafts and general employability.

Sports, Training The project has recently been established to tackle the gap in and Education sports provisions in the great lever area. They will be Partnership C.I.C providing inclusive sports activities such as boxing, cricket, £2500 (STEP) karate and wrestling to the local community Latif Jiva The All Natural Health project has been established to inform, All natural health support and provide practical sessions on all aspects of Sheila Vora - Jayes Natural health. They undertake healthy juicing sessions, £1774 Vora health talks and motivation sessions which are inclusive to the local great lever Community.

The Get Growing in Great Lever permaculture project has Bolton Urban been established to support local people to grow their own Growers fruit and vegetables. It will also be an outdoor accreditation £2500 Steve Jones centre where unemployed local residents can gain qualifications to improve their employability.

Community first panel member’s commitments

. Over the next 2 years the community first Panel members will actively promote and highlight local projects and community groups in the Great Lever ward who will benefit from the community first funding.

. The Panel will undertake informal consultations to highlight any areas or gaps which are needed for the local area and community.

. The Panel will update and amend the Community first action plan

. The Panel will meet twice a year or more if required to look through, discuss and approve submitted proposals.

. They will also actively support the Bolton at home organisation in overseeing the fund for the Great lever ward.
