The covid-19 pandemic has brought about many changes, not least in the way we offer church services. When services in church are allowed again we expect to be still following strict guidelines in order to keep everyone as safe as possible. There are only 15 household/bubble seating spaces in order to maintain safe social distancing, face masks are mandatory for attendees (unless they are exempt), hands must be sanitised, there can be no congregational singing. For any updates on church service arrangements during February and March please check the website:www.stbarnabas.org.uk

Swanmore Advent Calendar 2020 Doors without chocolate Remember these? Can you remember what was behind them? On December CSO Gary and the Festive Trail combined forces to create the Swanmore Advent Calendar 2020. Long ago before chocolate advent calendars were invented, children were very excited to open the cardboard door of the Advent Calendar, (no plastic in sight!) and see a colourful festive image be it a robin or a present or something a little obscure. With the help of willing volunteers, we attempted to recreate the early advent calendar magic using several props. We absolutely loved doing this and we hope that you enjoyed it too. Many thanks to all our doors and to all the guessers who made it so much fun. Roll on next year! Lou Hurley

Festive trail Lighting up the village

Christmas seems a long time ago now, it was wet, it was windy, and it was chilly, but the lights were beautiful. Roaming around Swanmore after dark was delightful as lights and decorations were in abundance this year and from early on in December, too. It was a tonic to see the variety of decorations and light installations around the village. It was very clear the effort that people had put into their displays and some houses were remarkable, you had to stop and take it all in, there was a lot going on. If I were discussing trends for a Sunday supplement, I would say multi-coloured lights are on the increase, pallet Christmas trees and snowman are very now, willow sculptures are very hard to make and are unlikely to be big in 2021, and that pre-lit deer are gorgeous and should be everywhere! A big thank you to all of you who offered to go on the Festive Trail map and huge apologies if I accidentally dropped you off (pdfs are not my friend and it was my error if you were left off). Swanmore Magazine Jan2021_v4_AW.indd 41 21/01/2021 16:21 February is the time when many local people head to Park on Sunday afternoons to admire the snowdrops. In Swanmore we can also enjoy the blooms in the garden at Hill Farm House which Jenny and Michael Maunder open each year in aid of charity and where they have planted thousands of snowdrops. Due to covid-19 neither venue is opening this year – so thanks to Berty Ferrone for some photographs instead… and we can all look forward to a return of Snowdrop Days in 2022.
