SAINT & ALL ANGELS 29 2019

OUR MISSION Aloha and welcome to St. Mark’s Parish of the Episcopal Diocese of Hawai‘i. We are a caring and inclusive church in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. St. Mark's is dedicated to sharing the good news of God in Christ through our celebration of the Sacraments, Liturgy, and Music, and by attending, in Jesus' Name, to the needs of our members and the wider community. We are a welcoming ohana, cherishing our catholic and Hawaiian mission roots, and we rejoice in our diversity. Parish Mission Statement

MEDITATION – ANGELS The scriptural word “angel” means, literally, a messenger. Messengers from God can be visible or invisible, and may assume human or non-human forms. Christians have always found themselves to be attended by healthful spirits – swift, powerful, and enlightening. Those beneficent spirits are often depicted in Christian art in human form, with wings to signify their swiftness and spacelessness, with swords to signify their power, and with dazzling raiment to signify their ability to enlighten. Unfortunately, this type of pictorial representation has led many to dismiss the angels as “just another mythical beast, like the unicorn, the griffin, or the sphinx.”

Of the many angels spoken of in the Bible, only four are called by name: Michael, , , and . The Archangel Michael is the powerful agent of God who wards off evil from God’s people, and delivers peace to them at the end of this life’s mortal struggle. “Michaelmas,” as his feast is called in , has long been one of the popular celebrations of the Christian Year in many parts of the world.

ST. MICHAEL & ALL ANGELS The vestments are white today. Today we pause from the green Sundays after Pentecost for the happy feast of St. Michael and All Angels (September 29). Falling on a Sunday this year, this feast has historically been given greater prominence by the church than the current prayer book calendar affords. Nevertheless, there are two sets of readings for Evening Prayer for this day in our Book of Common Prayer – one set for the Eve and the other set for the day. Even though the BCP does not indicate this feast has an exact eve, both sets of readings are provided in the lectionary. The same situation occurs for the Feast of St. Mary the Virgin (the Assumption). Michaelmas is known for its wonderful hymns, as well as Trinitarian imagery, for the angelic vocation is to worship unceasingly the Unity of the Trinity. On this day, the Preface for Trinity Sunday is used within the Eucharistic Prayers. Eucharistic Prayer D of the BCP is also particularly appropriate.

5 STEWARDSHIP & GIVING

STEWARDSHIP OF TIME Did you know that every Thursday morning a volunteer breaks down the prior Sunday’s flowers? Every Saturday another volunteer creates our flower arrangements. Every Saturday morning volunteers also prepare the church for our Sunday liturgies. Once a month volunteers gather to polish the brass and silver, and every week others meet to fill the candles with oil and wash the votives. Every Saturday morning the Sunday coffee for the early mass is prepped, and early on Sunday morning a volunteer opens the church and turns on the coffee, while another volunteer picks up the trash in the parking lot and along the front yard. On Saturday mornings another volunteer inserts the announcements into the service leaflets. It takes these volunteers and many more to ensure that St. Mark’s operates smoothly week after week. St. Mark’s thanks everyone for their generous stewardship of time week after week.
