Descendants of Dietrich-August & Magdalena-Christina (Jensen) Nielsen

Generation 1

1. DIETRICH AUGUST5 NIELSEN (Hans Adolph4, Hans Hinrich3, Christian2, Hans1)1, 2, 3, 4 was born on 25 Oct 1836 in , Schleswig-, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany1, 3, 4. He died on 20 Feb 1908 in Buhskoppel, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany3, 4. He married Magdalena Christina Jensen on 07 Jun 18673, 4. She was born on 10 Feb 1844 in Rabel, Schleswig-Flensburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany3, 4. She died on 05 Oct 1931 in Buhskoppel, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany3, 4.

Dietrich August Nielsen1, 2, 3, 4 was baptized on 28 Nov 1836 in , Schleswig-Flensburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany1. He was buried in St. Katherine's Lutheran Church Cemetery, Gelting, Germany5.

Notes for Dietrich August Nielsen: Dietrich's niece Anna (Thomsen) Martensen assumed the control of the Nielsen family farm upon her marriage in 1879 to Nikolaus Martensen. Following the deaths of Anna's parents in 1866 (Asmus & Margaretha Nielsen Thomsen), Dietrich apparently operated the farm on a 12-year lease until 1879. [Source: Martensen, 1997, pg 35a].

Dietrich August Nielsen and Magdalena Christina Jensen had the following children: 2. i. CATHARINE6 NIELSEN6 was born on 20 Jun 1868 in Rabenholz, Schleswig-Flensburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany6. She died on 20 Aug 1955 in Buhskoppel, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany6.

ii. MARGARETHE HELENE NIELSEN7 was born on 26 Jan 1871 in Rabenholz, Schleswig-Flensburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany7.

Notes for Margarethe Helene Nielsen: [RLN opinion] The photos of Johannes, Catharine, and Margarethe Nielsen were originally identified in our family lore as being Johannes & Katharine, children of Dietrich's twin bro. Conrad and his third wife Catharine Steffen. However, RLN believes this is not correct and that they are in fact the children of Dietrich for the following reasons.

1) RLN thought from the beginning that the two photos of "Katharine" in Alma Mundt's possession did not appear to be the same young woman; particularly in the structure of the noses. 2) Additionally, information found in the church record archives in Schleswig (by Klaus Struve) listed only "August Peter" and "Anna Mathilde" as children of Conrad & and his third wife Catharine Steffen, but did not list Johannes & Katharine. 3) Finally, these three children in the photo of Dietrich's family (ca. 1900) in Martensen's history of Christian Nielsen indicates striking similarities with those three individuals in the photos in Alma Mundt's possession.

3. iii. JOHANNES NIELSEN8, 9 was born on 15 May 1874 in Rabenholz, Schleswig-Flensburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany8, 9. He died on 12 Jan 1955 in Buhskoppel, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany8, 9. He married Emma Lorenzen on 12 Aug 1904 in Gelting, Schleswig-Flensburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany9, 10, 11. She was born on 22 Nov 1876 in Stutebüll, Schleswig-Flensburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany10. She died on 03 Mar 1963 in Buhskoppel, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany10.

Generation 2

2. CATHARINE6 NIELSEN (Dietrich August5, Hans Adolph4, Hans Hinrich3, Christian2, Hans1)6 was born on 20 Jun 1868 in Rabenholz, Schleswig-Flensburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany6. She died on 20 Aug 1955 in Buhskoppel, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany6.

Notes for Catharine Nielsen: [RLN opinion] The photos of Johannes, Catharine, and Margarethe Nielsen were originally identified in our family lore as being Johannes & Katharine, children of Dietrich's twin bro.

Catharine Nielsen had the following child: i. WILLI7 NIELSEN12 was born on 29 Jun 1891 in Rabenholz, Schleswig-Flensburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany12, 13. He died on 25 Sep 1915 (Died in the Battle of Verdun, World War I12, 13).

Notes for Willi Nielsen: [RLN Speculation] Initially, I thought Willi was the son of Johannes. However, the description of the Dietrich Nielsen family photo in Martensen's history of Christian Nielsen suggests that Willi is the son of Catharine instead...... "Catharine Nielsen was born on 20.6.1868 in our farm, she died on 08.20.1955 in Buhskoppel. She stands above left in the picture. Her son Willi Nielsen born 29.6.1891 in Buhskoppel, killed on 04.25.1915 at Verdun, stands next to his grandfather Dietrich Nielsen, and his grandmother Magdalene Christine born Jensen." If Willi is indeed Catharine's son, it is not yet know whether he was born out of wedlock, his parents divorced and Catharine gave him the family surname, or she had been married to another Nielsen.

3. JOHANNES6 NIELSEN (Dietrich August5, Hans Adolph4, Hans Hinrich3, Christian2, Hans1)8, 9 was born on 15 May 1874 in Rabenholz, Schleswig-Flensburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany8, 9.

Johannes Nielsen8, 9 was buried in St. Katherine's Lutheran Church Cemetery, Gelting, Germany8.
