Hydropower

• From the word “Hydro” meaning water, we can tell that hydropower is electricity generated using the energy of moving water. • The first hydroelectric power plant was built at Niagara falls in 1879. • Hydroelectric power provides almost 1/5 of the world’s electricity. • One of the world's largest hydro plants is at Three Gorges on China's Yangtze River. HYDROELECTRIC POWER

• Hydropower generates about 24 percent of the world's and 12 percent of the United States' electricity. • Hydroelectric power plants generally range in size from several hundred kilowatts to several hundred megawatts , but a few enormous plants have capacities near 10,000 megawatts in order to supply electricity to millions of people. HYDROELECTRIC POWER

• Hydropower is the most energy efficient power generator. Currently, hydropower is capable of converting 90% of the available energy into electricity. This can be compared to the most efficient fossil fuel plants, which are only 60% efficient. HYDROELECTRIC POWER

• Hydropower functions by converting the energy in flowing water into electricity. The volume of water flow and the height (called the head) from the turbines in the power plant to the water surface created by the determines the quantity of electricity generated. • Kinetic Energy-Mechanical Energy-Electrical Energy A typical hydro plant is a system with three parts: a powerhouse where the electricity is produced; a dam that can be opened or closed to control water flow; and a where water can be stored. The water behind the dam flows through an intake and pushes against blades in a turbine, causing them to turn. The turbine spins a generator to produce electricity. The amount of electricity that can be generated depends on how far the water drops and how much water moves through the system. The electricity can be transported over long- distance power lines to homes, factories, and businesses. HYDROELECTRIC POWER

• The amount of electricity a hydropower plant produces depends on two factors: 1)How far the water falls (distance) 2)Amount of the water falling (quantity) • Hydropower is the • Damming rivers may cheapest way to destroy or disrupt generate electricity wildlife and other today.
