A Thank You To S.J.K.F. By Roger Chewning

I would to express a heartfelt thanks to the South Jersey Kite Flyers for their support and participation in making the 16th Annual WIKF a great success this year. I hope the barbecue was a financial winner for the club - as much as it was a social success. It really is a great kickoff to the event, and the food is great. Thanks for all the help and volunteer efforts, and for the sponsoring of Scott Hampton. Other clubs are asking how they could be a host club to Wildwood. I think the SJKF, with all that they do, is a great model for other clubs. Thanks for the ground and aerial displays as well. I would also like to say that we are open to ideas and suggestions from the club on how to make the event better. See you in 2002. (Wow, I am getting old). Roger

rd 73 Annual Zilker Park Kite Festival By Rob Cembalest (a virgin writer!!) Lured to Austin I was fortunate to attend the 73 rd annual Zilker Park Kite festival. That’s right 73 rd . I t was a warm sunny day and the public turned out in force. It is as you can imagine a well-supported event by non-kite people. Looking at a city map to see where the event was to be held I was astounded to see “Kite Field “ right on the map in the park. Zilker Park runs along the south side of Austin on the river. The main sponsors of the event are the Exchange club of Austin and the City of Austin parks and recreation Department. The days invited guests were the Gombergs, they set up their banner display, Dave and I traded some poles for the day and I set up my banner on the same line. Susan Gomberg spent most of the day keeping Bols and Crowns and Octopi aloft in variable shifting winds on a moist field. By the end of the day the public had encroached far enough onto the field that they had to pack up. The main field ran all day with demos from local flyers and builders. The team Austin EOL was out in force keeping the demo field hopping. It was a family style competition: with highest kite, steadiest kite, strongest pulling, smallest, largest and most unusual. The sky stayed full with small deltas, sleds and diamonds made by the children for schools and scouts. The local vendor had a booth with the latest offerings from China, Spectra Star ships sailed and Top Of The Line planes flew in all directions through out the afternoon. Along with the more traditional mass-market kites I got to add my Southwest motif bulldog with feather socks and my Martin Lester Ref as well as Red Devil #3. I saw many friends that I see to little of that live in that part of the country and I had the opportunity to chat with some of the Austin area kite crowd who at the moment don’t have a club .It keeps me appreciative of South Jersey Kite Flyers and the people that keep the club together.

And what FLY KITES, around 2 pm. There was a guy, Hien Nyugen, a great surprise: Peter kitesurfing as well, very interesting. More pictures are Kouklamanis treated the flyers and available at: staff to Heros and drinks on http://community.webshots.com/album/13686596BSgmmyfdx Saturday. Hi South Jersey Kite Flyers, The Kite Loft has recently developed an Intranet site. This is a site where members can post kite related photos, list club events, establish discussion topics, or just see what's going on in the kiting world. We are building content on this site but we need help from all of you. If you have an interest in kites or you just want to be kept informed on what's going on at The Kite Loft then please join the group. Don't worry, there is no cost to join and no one is required to actively participate. All we ask is that you check it out. You can request to join at www.kiteloft.intranets.com. If you have any questions please feel free to email us at mailto:[email protected]. Hope to see you on our Intranet. Jay Knerr The Kite Loft
