Rosen Rhythm andBluesCruise,Rhythm October 2007. onthe Legendary Joe LouisWalker In 1985, after a decade of playing and singing nothing but gospel music with a quartet called the Spiritual Corinthians, 35-year-old Joe Louis Walker decided to get back to the blues. The San Francisco–born singer-guitarist had begun playing blues when he was 14, at first with a band of relatives and then with blues-singing pimp Fillmore Slim before becoming a fixture at the Matrix, the city’s preeminent rock club during the psychedelic Summer of Love, backing such visiting artists as Earl Hooker and Magic Sam. Michael Bloomfield became a close friend and mentor. The two musicians lived together for a period, and the famous guitarist even produced a Walker demo for Buddah Records, though nothing came of it. Then, in 1975, Walker walked away from the blues completely in order to escape the fast life and the drugs and alcohol associated with it that he saw negatively affecting Bloomfield and other musician friends. Walker knew nothing about the blues business when he started doing blues gigs again around the Bay Area with a band he’d put together, as a member of Oakland blues singer-guitarist Haskell “Cool Papa” Sadler’s band, and (for a tour of Europe) with the ad hoc Mississippi Delta Blues Band. -

McCoo and Davis—who celebrated 50 years of marriage earlier this year—are the original lead singers of the legendary pop/R&B vocal group The 5th Dimension, producing iconic songs such as “Up, Up and Away,” “Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In,” “Worst That Could Happen,” “Stoned Soul Picnic,” “Sweet Blindness,” “Wedding Bell Blues” and “One Less Bell to Answer.” They left The 5th Dimension to strike out on their own—and they found instant success. In 1976, their album I Hope We Get to Love in Time topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and single “You Don’t Have to be a Star (to Be in My Show)” went to No. 1 and was honored with the Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance. In 1977, they hosted their own TV series on CBS. Marilyn McCoo later hosted the 1980s music countdown series Solid Gold. She’s also acted in numerous TV series and films. She made her mark on Broadway, most notably playing Julie in the revival of Showboat. Billy Davis went on to a successful gospel music career. He has also been featured on TV and film; McCoo and Davis had recurring roles together as parents on The Jamie Foxx Show. -

As One of Nola Blue Records' Newest Signings, Clarence Spady Is
As one of Nola Blue Records’ newest signings, Clarence Spady is thoroughly motivated when it comes to his career. “Here we are in the saddle,” says the veteran blues guitarist. “I’ve got both hands on the reins right now. So I don’t plan on letting go.” Excellent news for contemporary blues fans who are well aware of Spady’s acclaimed 1996 album Nature of the Beast and his equally impressive 2008 followup Just Between Us. Clarence’s musical career has weathered its share of peaks and val- leys, but playing his singularly funky brand of impassioned, electrifying blues—a talent that has taken him all over the world—dominates his time these days as he writes great new material and prepares to record it. By any standard, Clarence embarked on his musical odyssey at an uncommonly tender age. Born in Paterson, New Jersey, Spady began playing guitar when he was only five years old (his family moved a couple of hours west to Scranton, PA during this period, a town Spady lives in today). Clarence’s musical exploits commenced due to encouragement from two guitarists in his immediate family, his father (also named Clarence) and his Uncle Fletchey. “He was a very good blues guitarist, the likes of Otis Rush or Booba Barnes,” Spady says of his uncle. “He had that nasty, raw feel. He was from North Carolina origi- nally. And he could sing. “When I was five, we were sitting at my Uncle Fletchey’s. He had a blues jam every weekend. And I would sit on my dad’s left knee while he was playing, looking at his hand.
