The Australian Capital Territory (ACTRU) was incorporated in 1937. Since that time it has administered a local competition in and around Canberra - the capital city of Australia. ACTRU has also played representative football against Queensland, New South Wales, other Australian States, visiting national and provincial teams.

In 1996, the Super 12 Southern Hemisphere Provincial Competition was inaugurated and the ACT was invited to participate. The ACTRU team entered in the Super 12 was called the 'Brumbies'. A Brumby is a wild horse that resides in the high country around the ACT.

The Brumbies have been very successful in the ACT FACTS first two years of the Super 12 competition.
