Université de Aigles Bleus standout forward Allain Saulnier has been rewarded for his stellar first semester in the Atlantic University Sport men’s hockey conference.

Saulnier has been named to the men’s hockey all-star team that will play Canadian national junior team prospects next week.

The two-game exhibition series is slated for Dec. 12 and Dec. 13 in Boisbriand,Que.,as part of the Canadian junior team’s preparation for the world junior hockey championship from Dec.26 to Jan. 5 in Toronto and Montreal.

Saulnier, a fourth-year forward from Cap-Pelé, recorded a country-high 33 points in 18 games during the first semester of the regular season. He’s tallied four goals and 29 assists.

Saulnier is thrilled to get the opportunity to play on the U Sports all-star team. His twin brother, Alex, played in the first series between the two teams last year, registering three points in the two games.

“I am very excited to be part of this team. My brother went last year and all things were positive and quite an experience. I am looking forward to live it myself,”Saulnier said.

“It will be interesting to play the top junior age players in Canada. They are younger than we are and it should be exciting. I will have an added bonus while watching the world juniors on Boxing Day as I will have played against these guys. I am looking forward to the games.”

Saulnier will join his teammates on Dec. 11 and practice in time for the first game the following day in Boisbriand.

“I am happy for Allain. He will have a positive impact on this team,”said UdeM head coach Serge Bourgeois.“His brother Alex was a key player last year. Allain is a great ambassador for our team.”

Riverview’s Jordan Murray, a defence-man with the University of New Brunswick

Varsity Reds,has also been picked to the U Sports all-star team.

The fourth-year player ranks first in the country in scoring by defencemen with nine goals and 28 points in 18 games this season. Murray, who played on the U Sports all-star team last year,was selected the national defenceman of the year last season.

Brett Gibson of the Queen’s Gaels will guide the U Sports squad in the two- game series. He will be accompanied behind the bench by assistants Brad Peddle of St. FX, Mark Howell of the and Marc-Etienne Hubert of the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières Patriotes.

“It is a fantastic opportunity for these 23 U Sports athletes from across the country to showcase how great of a product we have,” said Gibson.“It also comes with a great responsibility to be a small part of the preparation for our Canadian under-20 team in their quest for a gold medal.”

The U Sports team lineup is comprised of 11 players from the Ontario University Athletics conference and six apiece from the AUS and Canada West conferences.

Last December, the U Sports all-stars split a two-game series with the Canadian team hopefuls, claiming a 5-4 shootout victory in the first game and losing 5-0 in the second.
