12th Biennial International Conference 2 Welcome! Dear Colleagues, It is with great pleasure and gratitude that I welcome you to our 12th Biennial International 2014 Conference at Asilomar Retreat Center in beautiful Pacific Grove, California, USA with the theme “Exploring Diversity in Gestalt Therapy”. Here we are now, convening at a retreat center. It is a first for us. We will be contained and held in new ways where we anticipate the potential for inspired creativity, possibility and intimacy. Walking down the path on the cliffs, we’ll meet by the ocean for early morning breathing and yoga; or perhaps, hanging out and collaborating with nature or gather around a bond fire sharing stories, poems and laughter and an evening of movement exploration for the whole community. We’ve been uplifted by the record number of workshop Gail Feinstein, AAGT President proposals submitted for the preconference and conference. The high quality and interesting range of topics of proposals made it most challenging to choose which ones would be the best fit. We wanted to include almost all of them and sad that we could not. We’re excited to continue our traditions of process groups that support the shaping, framing and grounding of the group and our community meetings threaded throughout the conference. This is a time for all of us to come together to breathe, explore, co-create, discuss and plan the future of our organization as we pause, reflect and assess where we are right now. In this open forum with face-to-face contact, we venture into a rich terrain of diversity. -

Alice took the watch from the Rabbit. The Rabbit heard the beat of his heart for the first time. --Lederman, 1978 Perhaps I shall begin from what prompted me to find ….”the answer”. One day I asked myself, why is psychotherapy divided into two groups one working with adult clients and the other with children? I have come across many theories citing the importance of dividing life into successive stages explaining human development. The child is not an adult person, and adult is not a child nor a teenager. However, after many years of studying, I feel it is strange to divide human life in into adults and children. Although I understand this division, I began to think about other points of view regading human development and I feel as if I am standing at the opposite pole. In reality our life is continuity. For example, after many years working in the field, not once have I seen adults try to fufil their desire to satisfy their childhood needs—i.e. reading a fairy tale. I have experieced first hand children's need to be taken seriously, as if they were capable of full decision- making. Despite not having worked in the office with children in the Gestalt approach, but only through the TRE approach (here also I have found a lot of inspiration), I began to search for profesionals who believe and practice phsychotherapy both with children and adults. -

INTERVIEW WITH VIOLET OAKLANDER CHRISTIANE ELSBREE Introduction: I met Violet at the beginning of my career shortly after her first book was published. Sometimes when you are very close to someone you don’t realize the magnitude of their acclaim, your own relationship with them remains the same — you still go to movies together, have lunch, hang out, share holidays and special occasions. Eventually it sinks in that your dear friend is now viewed differently throughout the world. This is what happened for me with Violet. While she has remained the same friend to me, she has become a world-renowned master clinician. There are personal sacrifices that come with this kind of dedication to work and to heeding the inspiration within. I hope that the excerpts chosen here will inspire you as she has inspired me. Violet’s level of productivity in her teaching and writing show her dedication, and speak to the demand for what she has to offer. Her work, the Gestalt therapy approach to work with children, offers a humanistic alternative. Her approach allows space and time for self-discovery. It is directive, in that it is not passive, but it is not an imposed program or curriculum. It allows each individual child to blossom. She responds to what is emerging in the child and remains ever vigilant about maintaining contact.
