On Thursday, September 21, the Roncalli Family formally announced the launch of the On This Rock: Building Faith and Family Capital Campaign. With over 350 guests in attendance, the evening was filled with community, hope and excitement! Prayer, student performances and personal testimony all set the stage for a successful celebration.

The evening began with a small reception to thank the volunteers whom have dedicated so much time and effort in the early stages of the campaign. Dr. Joe Hollowell gave a campaign update to the group followed by some initial ground breaking with a bulldozer pushing dirt in the area designated for our new Family Room/gymnasium. The excitement was incredible and carried into the gymnasium for the main event. After dinner, the official program began with testimony from Dr. Hollowell, Principal Chuck Weisenbach, campaign chairs Dr. Dave and Anne Wolf and Dave and Anne Doyle and RHS senior Lizzie Fox. The official campaign video was also premiered for all to see! View the video at www.roncalli.org/capital_campaign. The Rebel Rhapsody Show Choir performed and student volunteers served and attended to the guests.

Through generous pledges to the campaign, at the end of the evening on September 21, we were able to announce that the campaign was well over $5.9 million dollars pledged. That is a fantastic start to this most important effort. The campaign is scheduled to continue in the active phase through June 2018. We still have much money to raise in order to complete all of the initiatives.

On behalf of the entire Roncalli Family, I am hoping and praying that you want to be a part of this campaign. Great momentum and enthusiasm surround making these facility upgrades to our campus. Every dollar raised will make a difference. Please contact me at 317.788.4098 or at [email protected] to make a donation or pledge to the campaign. This is the time to be a part of making Roncalli history!

6 UPDATE MAGAZINE WINTER 2017 RONCALLI • SACRED HEART CENTRAL • CHARTRAND • KENNEDY MEMORIAL 7 Advent: The Season of Hope Fr. Dave Marcotte Chaplain

Imagine how our Blessed Mother must have felt upon receiving the news that the impossible was about to take place within her, that she would give birth to the Savior. How could she tell her betrothed, Joseph? What would her family think? Who would believe her?

“Do not be afraid, Mary,” the angel says to her. “Nothing will be impossible with God” (Luke 1:30, 37). We know the rest of the story. The impossible was indeed made possible, not only at the birth of Jesus, but in the many miracles he performed, and most of all at his Resurrection. If God could accomplish all this, imagine what God can do in your own life. Advent is the season for imagining what is possible, for hoping beyond hope.

But it is also the season when hope can be hardest to find, dreams hardest to believe. The days draw short, the nights are long and the air turns cold. Expenses may loom at a time when resources are scarce. Separation, grief, loneliness, and depression are no strangers to the season. Hope may be in short supply during this time. We need Mary’s inspiring example of courage and trust in the face of uncertainty more than ever.

Mary can’t guarantee us a smooth ride, however. Nor can Mary promise us a season free of anxiety and worry. What Mary can offer us is a remarkable and inspiring example of courage in the face of adversity, patience in the face of uncertainty, and hope beyond hope that the impossible is indeed possible. Our story isn’t finished, either, no matter what challenges or wounds burden us this season. All things remain possible with God. This is the miracle of Advent. We can once again dream the impossible dream- and reach the unreachable star.

RONCALLI • SACRED HEART CENTRAL • CHARTRAND • KENNEDY MEMORIAL 11 Grand Canyon Wanderlust By: Robyn Witty RHS Science teacher I was beyond blessed to receive an all expenses paid teacher seat funded by the National Center for Science Education’s Grand Canyon Rafting trip this past summer. Our patchwork group of scientists, professors, and geocachers spent eight days traversing the canyon and its side streams.

Sleeping under a starry sky surrounded by canyon walls several hundred feet high without light pollution from the city was mesmerizing and powerful.

I took home a variety of information and photos to share with my students about the canyon. I learned about the downstream impacts of a dam, the fragile desert soils, how scorpions fluoresce under black light, and evidence of deep time across two billion years old. We examined fossils, invasive species, faulting, dikes, and volcanic lava flows.

This trip was once in a lifetime for me. Any Roncalli student interested in experiencing the Grand Canyon in person should look into our 2018 summer field studies. The two-week trip will be headed to the San Juan Mountains in Southwestern Colorado. Time will be spent camping and backpacking in the San Juan Mountains and touring the Grand Canyon National Park. The dates for the trip are June 11-24, 2018. Please see Dr. Hollowell for more infomation.

12 UPDATE MAGAZINE WINTER 2017 FOUR REBELS EARN EAGLE SCOUT HONOR Roncalli High School seniors Jason Brown, Kyle Carpenter, sophomore Andrew Goebel and freshman Ryan Sissons each passed their Eagle Board Review and have earned the distinction of being an Eagle Scout, which is the highest honor bestowed by the Boy Scouts of America. Jason Brown R’18 For his Eagle Scout project, Brown built steps on the Roncalli campus to join two practice fields that are divided by a steep hill. A group of 15 people helped Brown complete the project in about 160 hours of work. The cost of the project was $1,400 and was funded by friends, family and local businesses. He is the son of Jeff (R’82)and Joan (R’91) Brown and they are members of St. Jude .

Sissons built a Gaga pit and benches for the students at Abraham Ryan Sissons R’21 Lincoln Elementary in Perry Township. The request came from special needs teachers who wanted a safe place for their students to learn from organized play. Gaga is similar to dodge ball but you can only roll the ball and you are out if you are hit below the knees. He is the son of Sean and Debbie Sissons and they are members of Our Lady of the Greenwood Catholic Church.

For his Eagle Scout project, Carpenter assisted the campus beautification efforts at his home parish, St. Barnabas Catholic Church. He and his volunteers spent 200 hours building barriers Kyle Carpenter R’18 to avoid erosion of a crushed stone walk and also built some storage areas for parish items. They moved more than three tons of retaining wall blocks to complete the stone-edging portion of the project. He is the son of Brian and Coral Carpenter.

Goebel built a mobile concession stand, complete with electrical outlets, for the Franklin Township Soccer Club. He spent 200 hours on this project over a 10-month period. The concession stand is a 12 x 6 foot building secured to a 14 foot landscaping trailer. He is the son of W. Scott and Laurie Goebel.

RHS PARTICIPATING IN THE LATINO OUTREACH INITIATIVE In response to national data showing Latinos to be both the fastest-growing segment of the U.S. Catholic Church and the most under served by Catholic schools, the University of Notre Dame's Catholic School Advantage Campaign founded the Latino Enrollment Institute (LEI) in 2012. This initiative identifies Catholic schools which have capacity (open seats) and favorable demographic potential (growing number of Latino families in the surrounding area), and guides motivated principals and select faculty leaders toward attracting and the serving Latino students more effectively.

Roncalli High School was selected by the Archdiocese of Indianapolis’ Office of Catholic Schools to participate in the Latino Outreach Initiative, sponsored by the University of Notre Dame’s Latino Enrollment Institute.

This past summer RHS Principal Chuck Weisenbach and Co-Director of Guidance Lynn Starkey attended the LEI conference at Notre Dame to kick-off our school’s participation in the program.

Roncalli has now formed an LEI team whose task is to oversee the efforts to generate and implement strategies that will allow our school to better meet the needs of the Latino population on the southside of Indianapolis.

RHS will receive comprehensive, ongoing support from the LEI at Notre Dame. Additionally, the archdiocese has hired Mr. Phil Gonzalez as its Latino Outreach Coordinator. “We are very excited to partner with Notre Dame and the archdiocese in our efforts to grow our Latino enrollment and to better serve the needs of the Latino community,” commented Mr. Weisenbach.

RONCALLI • SACRED HEART CENTRAL • CHARTRAND • KENNEDY MEMORIAL 33 Rebel for a Day!

Between the 10 South Deanery 8th grade classes and individual guests, Roncalli has already hosted over 370 students for shadow visits! For the deanery visits, the classes heard from a current senior who graduated from their grade school, watched a video created by Roncalli graduate Harrison Pogue R’11 and played a trivia game to see how well they know RHS. After the morning program, they were paired with a current freshmen or sophomore, and they attended 3rd and 4th period with their host. Next came lunch, and then they heard from a Roncalli administrator, who spoke to them on how their experience as a Rebel will be unique to them as an individual! Each group ended their visit by watching a performance by the RHS Show Choir.

If your 8th grade son or daughter is interested in being a Rebel for a Day, please contact Director of Admissions, Allie Ross R’04 at [email protected] to set up the visit. She will work with you on finding the perfect host for your student, based on their academic and extracurricular interests. It is a great way for future Rebels to see what it is like to be a student at Roncalli!

A young boys soccer team finished with an 8-10-1 record. Despite graduating nine seniors from last year’s squad, this year’s team advanced to the sectional final for the fourth straight season. The Rebels won two postseason games, including a 2-1 sectional semifinal victory over a 13-win Franklin team on its home pitch. Among the memorable regular season efforts was a home comeback against Franklin Central, when the Rebels turned a 3-0 deficit into a 3-3 draw. Additionally, the Rebels beat rival Southport twice – 3-2 in the season opener and 2-1 in overtime in the opening round of the Marion County Tournament.

Junior midfielder Robert Thang earned the team’s MVP award. He was a Top Team selection and second team All-District selection by the Indiana Soccer Coaches Association (ISCA). Thang was joined on the All-Circle City Conference team by junior goalkeeper Daniel Woodruff. Senior Zach Wallem was named the team’s mental attitude award winner. Woodruff, senior Luke Dow and juniors Wes Cunningham and Mateo Gonzalez were all picked to the Academic All-State team by the state’s coaches.

GIRLS SOCCER

The girls soccer team finished with an 8-8-1 record. The team finished the season ranked 13th in the final Class 2A state poll. It navigated a schedule that featured six games against teams that finished the season ranked in the top 10 in their respective classes. The season was highlighted by a 1-0 road win at Fort Wayne Carroll and a 2-1 victory at Franklin Central. In the Franklin Central game, sophomore goalkeeper Abby Genier made 25 saves, earning her Indianapolis Star Player of the Week honors.

Senior Rita Brockman was named the team MVP and senior Sydney Young earned the team’s mental attitude award. The Indiana Soccer Coaches Association (ISCA) selected Brockman second- team All-District. Young won a Top Team player award from the ISCA. Sophomore Sophia Dietz was named All-Circle City Conference and joined Genier on the All-Marion County team, as selected by the Marion County Coaches of Girls Sports Association (MCCGSA).

Brockman, Young and fellow seniors Grace Elo, Kelly Grube, Morgan Kincaid, Maiya Mahoney were all named Academic All-State by the ISCA. Juniors Ainsley Flask, Sidney Kritzmire, Molly Mullin and Jennifer Murillo were also selected Academic All-State by the ISCA. Additionally, the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association (ICGSA) selected Morgan Kincaid to the Academic All-State team. That same organization named Grace Elo, Kelly Grube, Sydney Young and Rita Brockman to the honorable mention Academic All-State team.

BOYS TENNIS

Facing the graduation of last season’s top four players and a season-ending injury to a returning player, the boys’ tennis team rallied to win the program’s first sectional title since 2014. They defeated Lutheran (5-0) and Frankln Central (4-1) to win the program’s ninth overall sectional crown. The team finished with a 9-14 record against a schedule featuring seven teams in the state’s final top 30 poll and two of the state’s top five teams. Among the team’s victories were two wins over Franklin Central and wins over Lutheran and Lawrence Central, which propelled the team into the Marion County Tournament semifinal round. Senior Bryson Meek won the team’s MVP award. Sophomore Alex Payne earned the team’s mental attitude award.

A veteran girls golf team capitalized on multiple years of varsity experience to put together the program’s best winning percentage in four seasons. They met its goal of advancing to regional by finishing second in a strong sectional field. The team returned to the regional after missing out in 2016. The team was consistently in the upper tier of the field in the larger events, including a third-place finish in the Marion County Championships and second-place finishes in the All-Catholic and Circle City Conference events. Senior Annie Sullivan, who earned all-conference honors for the second straight year, was named the team’s MVP and senior Sophia Egold won the team’s mental attitude award.

RONCALLI • SACRED HEART CENTRAL • CHARTRAND • KENNEDY MEMORIAL 53 The Last Word Chuck Weisenbach R’79 Principal

It is not uncommon for Catholic high schools across the country to develop what is called a “graduate profile.” The purpose of a graduate profile is to give clear direction to a school’s students, faculty, staff and parents as to the desired outcomes for each student during their years in school, culminating in graduation. For many years this practice was more common in Catholic high schools affiliated with a specific religious order (i.e., Franciscans, Dominicans, Benedictines, etc.) but has become more common among all Catholic schools. Last spring Roncalli High School undertook the development of a graduate profile as an initiative set forth in its current Strategic Plan. The process included input from students, teachers, administrators, staff members, parents, alumni and representatives from the archdiocesan Office of Catholic Schools. We are very proud of the graduate profile that was created for Roncalli High School and are anxious to have it serve as a guidepost for all who work with our students!

Roncalli Graduate Profile: As Christ has called upon each of us to “go make disciples of all nations” and to the extent that our namesake, St. John XXIII (Angelo Cardinal Roncalli) was committed to that task, it is Roncalli High School’s intention to create disciples of Jesus in the image of St. John. It is to this purpose that we aspire for all of our graduates to honor and glorify God by:

FAITH: having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and evangelizing the message of the Gospel through their actions.

ACADEMIA: reaching their fullest potential through a commitment to lifelong learning.

SERVICE: serving the needs of others with loving and compassionate hearts.

COMMUNITY: being devout members of the Church, cultivators of the Roncalli spirit, and responsible citizens.

DIGNITY: recognizing that every person is created in the image and likeness of God, having the utmost respect for life, and embracing a diverse world.

As a follow-up to this graduate profile, I wanted to share with you a couple of unsolicited comments shared with me via email or voicemail during the first months of this school year.

54 UPDATE MAGAZINE WINTER 2017 Member of the class of 2017 “. . . the intangible points of emphasis at Roncalli (an expectation of excellence, preparing for class in addition to doing homework, getting homework done in a timely manner, asking questions both in and out of class, and general study skills) are invaluable and something that wasn’t emphasized in other high schools. I’m very grateful the teachers at Roncalli didn’t “baby” us through the classes because the professors at the collegiate level have no interest in babying students.”

Random citizen “. . . I was downtown near city market on Sunday and saw about 3 cars full of teenagers (who had Roncalli sweatshirts on) and my wife and I were just observing because “you never know with teenagers”. They had coolers, sacks, and drinks. They were the nicest kids. They were talking so kindly to the homeless and giving them sacks of food. We could not believe what we were witnessing and what good kids they were. I felt like I had to let the school know what we saw. They represented the school so well and whatever you are doing with your students is working.”

Bus driver “I have been driving a school bus for 35 years. I drove some of your students to and from Olive Garden. I called to compliment your school because I have never seen kids so well behaved. They were beyond polite. I was just so impressed with them and their kindness.”

Local charitable organization “The volunteers that showed up from Roncalli worked tirelessly to accept the food donations, sort them, load them in crates and carry the crates to the truck. We were so fortunate to have them. We couldn’t have done it without them. They all really showed up to work and serve and hardly took time to take a deep breath.”

Local health care provider (email) “. . . 99% of the Roncalli students I have seen over the years have made my job so much more enjoyable than ever imaginable! I get to see kids from all the schools on the southside and around town. There is a distinct difference in the Roncalli kids.”

Member of the RHS Class of 2016 “...I am writing to you both to share some exciting news as it applies to my life after Roncalli. I have just finished my first year in college (making the dean’s list) and tomorrow will finish my lab assistant internship at Eli Lilly and Company. This weekend I leave for Uganda where I will be serving with other undergraduates and health care professionals to provide healthcare to many underprivileged villages in the Bududa district of the country. I have Roncalli to thank for giving me many of the tools for this success and am grateful to all at Roncalli for giving me such a passion to give back and be of service to others.”

Scecina alum/football fan “...Between the first and second quarter of last Friday night’s football game between Roncalli and Scecina, members of the first graduating class from Scecina who were celebrating our 60th reunion this weekend were introduced on the field. As we received a nice reception from the Scecina fans and team I heard applause from the Roncalli side of the field and turned to see the coach and team standing and applauding. Roncalli High School should be very proud of not only of a good football team, but a classy team and staff.”

These are just a snippet of the positive comments that have come my way in just the first nine weeks of the school year. I share them with you not as a proud principal (though I am) but as testimony that our efforts to move our students in the direction of that “Graduate Profile” seem to be working!

In the spirit of the Thanksgiving holiday we all recently enjoyed, I thank all in the Roncalli Family who support the mission of our school in any way. Our school is deeply indebted to each of you!
