A coach is not permitted to have ANY in-person contact, on- or off-campus, with you during any dead period. • Alumni, boosters, and any other representatives of Indiana University’s athletics interests cannot participate in recruiting. Phone calls, emails, and personal contact between these reps and you or your relatives are strictly prohibited. • You may not accept any benefit, gift, or service, such as cash, clothing, cars, transportation, loans or discounts from an Indiana University staff member or a representative of IU’s athletics interests. 56 • 08/09 INDIANA hoosiers iuhoosiers.com 08/09 women’s HISTORY golf FORMER COACHES MARGARET CUMMINS (1967-79)

Margaret Cummins served as the women’s golf coach from the fall of 1967 to the conclusion of the 1979 season. Although many of her 12 seasons at Indiana were deemed extramural instead of varsity status, Cum- mins was the force behind championship golf teams at Indiana. Under her leadership, the Hoosiers captured regional honors and national recognition, while compet- ing annually for the AIAW national championship. A top competitor and teacher, Cummins was also an area consultant for the National Golf Foundation and served on many regional and national golf committees. Along with coaching the women’s squad, Cummins also worked in the Health, Physical Education and Recreation department, where she counseled incoming students and taught psychology of sport. Cummins graduated from the University of Arizona in 1963 and then earned her master’s at Smith College in 1968.

BRUCE COHEN (1979-81)

Bruce Cohen became Indiana University’s second women’s golf coach in the fall of 1979 and remained until the end of the 1981 season. Although Cohen was new to the coaching scene, he had been around Indi- ana University for some time. Cohen attended Ball State University for two years and was a varsity baseball team member. In 1970, he transferred to Indiana University, where he eventually became a golf professional under men’s coach Bob Fitch. Seven years of professional experience, including three under Fitch, earned Cohen well-deserved respect from his peers. A native of South Bend, Ind., Cohen also served as the Midwest AIAW Sports Committee golf represen- tative. He directed such events as the Indiana State Open Championship and the LPGA Bicenntenial Clas- sic. When not coaching or competing himself, Cohen spent much of his time giving lessons as a Class A as- sistant professional at the IU Golf Course.

SAM CARMICHAEL (1981-2004)

Sam Carmichael, eight-time Big Ten Women’s Coach of the Year, finished his 23rd and final season as Indiana’s women’s golf coach in 2004. Before Carmichael directed his attention solely to the women’s golf program in 1998, he spent nine years as IU’s men’s golf coach. During his time as the men’s coach, Carmichael won Coach of the Year honors twice (1991 and 1998) and the 1991 and 1998 Big Ten titles. In the fall of 1981, Carmichael assumed the position of head coach for the IU women’s team, and led the women to seven Big Ten Championship: 1986, 1987, 1990, 1992, 1995, 1996 and 1998. From 1981-2004, Carmichael’s IU women’s teams earned automatic berths to the NCAA Tournament eight times. The Hoosiers finished 11th in 1985, 12th in 1986, 13th in 1987, 11th in 1990, 13th in 1992, eighth in 1993, 17th in 1994, fifth in 1995 and 13th in 1998. The honors for Carmichael’s golfers did not stop on the course. A Big Ten-record 101 Academic All-Big Ten honors were awarded to IU golfers since 1985. In addition to Carmichael’s eight Big Ten Women’s Coach of the Year awards, he also received NCAA Regional Coach of the Year honors four times. His achievements culminated in his being name Indiana’s PGA Player of the Year Award in 1973, and he was inducted into the Indiana Golf Hall of Fame that same year.
