SUMMARY OF BIOHABITATS TEAMS AND QUALIFICATIONS

As a result of the separation between Penn Trails and Kennett Township, the Kennett Greenway needs a new Trail Engineer. The Kennett Greenway is an initiative to physically connect the Kennett community to its natural beauty through the formation of a 10- to14-mile pedestrian and bicycle loop. This network of trails linking Kennett’s preserved open spaces, recreational facilities, and other community assets, will be interconnected, safe, and well-maintained.1 This Township collaboration includes Kennett Trails & Sidewalks Committee and the Land Conservation Advisory Committee, the Kennett Borough and several private non-profit organizations, including Kennett Trails Alliance and The Land Conservancy for Southern Chester County (TLC).

We recommend the new Trails Engineer for this initiative be Biohabitats. They are an environmental design and consulting firm who was founded on the principles of restoring the earth’s resources and inspiring ecological stewardship. Their team for Kennett Township includes two subconsultants: Meliora, an engineering firm who is committed to sustainability, and Unknown Studio, a landscape architecture practice that strives to create experientially powerful places that are durable, resilient, and timeless. All three companies are highly qualified, have an incredible staff who are experienced in working with Greenways and trails, boast a litany of awards and accolades, and have worked locally in and around the Kennett area.

Biohabitats applies the science of ecology to restore ecosystems, conserve habitat, and regenerate the natural systems that sustain all life on Earth.2 They understand that earth’s resources are finite and, therefore steer projects toward sustainable designs while preserving the “sense of place” unique to each community they work with. Biohabitats recently worked as the ecological consultant for the Brandywine Conservancy and Museum of Art Master Plan, led by Jennifer Dowdell. Their work on the Floyds Ford Greenway Master Plan helped the project earn a Merit Award for Master Planning in the ’s “Designing the Parks” competition.3

Meliora is proud to be an award-winning firm that provides the engineering to implement the vision of their clients. Their mission is to “create better relationships with our environment by developing engineering solutions that build respectfully and enhance our communities, protecting and restoring our natural resources.”4 Meliora is also very familiar with our area. Notably, they have worked with Longwood Gardens, the Stroud Water Research Center, Mt. Cuba, New Bolton Veterinary Laboratory, the Brandywine Conservancy, and Meliora worked with the Borough of Kennett Square on their Sidewalk and Streetscape Improvements Project that was completed in 2104.

The second subconsultant Biohabitats recommends specifically for this Kennett Greenway project is Unknown Design. While they are a relatively new practice that was cofounded in 2019 by Claire Agre, the experience she and her associates bring to Unknown Studio, and to Kennett Township, is anything but unknown. Agre led the landscape design for the $90 million Longwood Main Fountain Garden and Longwood’s 40 Year Master Plan. We have the luxury of seeing firsthand how they, through the craft of design and engaged collaboration, “amplify the culture and ecology of the places in which we live.”5

In conclusion, all three of these companies, led by Biohabitats, seamlessly fold into the direction and desires of Kennett Township to preserve the beauty of the landscape while being as responsible and environmentally sustainable as possible. The mission of the Kennett Greenway is to connect the Kennett community to its natural beauty while promoting health, safety, a respect for the environment and a sense of community6. Michele Principal/Founder, Chief Engineer Adams PE, LEED AP For over 30 years, Michele Adams’ career has encompassed environmentally sensitive site design and sustainable water resources engineering. Her work includes planning and engineering with a focus on resilient design and improving watershed health with each built project. Scalise Project connects an outlying redevelopment area of new businesses and Borough Manager and Director of Public Works residential developments (including a new brewery) to the vibrant center of the Borough of Kennett Square Borough. Meliora led a design team for the documentation of the streetscape 120 Marshall Street Kennett Square, PA 19348 and utility improvements, including porous sidewalks and street trees. Unknown Studio is a landscape architecture and urban design practice with a deep belief in the power of the designed landscape to bring joy, wonder, beauty and improved quality of life to all. We design at all scales and sites, on the spectrum from urban to rural, regional to human scale. We work with our clients and stakeholders to create cohesive, memorable, and experientially powerful places for people.

APPROACH

Our workspace is equal parts studio and laboratory. Through experimentation and cross-disciplinary study, our practice seeks to understand the craft, history, and traditions of the places in which we work. Through engagement with our clients and stakeholders, we pursue a deep understanding of place and develop designed responses that are durable, resilient, and timeless. On all sites, we bring a passion for the making of landscape that embraces both innovative and time-tested techniques.

Our studio is based in Baltimore, MD, a creative workhorse of the Mid-Atlantic. We are inspired by Baltimore’s dynamic urban environment, vibrant, living arts community, and legacy of ambitious industrialism. Locally, our collaborations seek to help reshape and improve the city’s public spaces and promote social and ecological equity.

CREATIVE & RESPECTFUL PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT

Unknown Studio approaches many of its projects in the role of the “outsider.” This enables us to appreciate aspects of a place that are taken for granted, imagine responses that have never been considered, and encourages our curiosity throughout a project. We begin projects without preconceived notions around style, program, or direction; we come to a site and to a community with open ears and full hearts.

Below are highlights of our team’s track record in public engagement; specifically, in how we have built stakeholder groups, gathered inspiration and design ideas, and kept momentum going throughout the planning, design and construction process.

Building Constituency

When Unknown Studio’s leadership kicked off the master planning processes for Governors Island and for the Houston Botanic Garden, neither project existed as a destination or a place for the public. Together with the Trust for Governors Island, the design team created an interactive exhibit for the first season on the island, wherein the public could pitch their desires for the future park. Some of the most popular and compelling wishes were for “kids to run free,” “free bikes,” and “ice cream.” Simplistic as it sounds, these ideas directly influenced the design of the park to be car-free, dimensionally planned for cyclists and pedestrians to safely commingle, and for the visionary design of play areas which are contiguous with the larger landscape. On Governors Island there are no fences hemming play areas in, they are seamless with areas for picnicking and relaxing, and all ages are invited. In a sense, the entire project became a destination play area, for all ages.

At the Houston Botanic Garden, a small group of neighbors had concerns about the conversion of an underutilized public golf course into a botanic garden, fearing a lack of inclusion. During construction at Governors Island and Longwood’s Main Fountain Garden, we worked with the clients to invite the public into the construction site in safe and engaging ways.
