Collegiate Academy Activities Executive Committee The committee met on met on April 30th and August 27th to make plans for the year’s activities. A combined effort of the officers, faculty advisors, and onsite workshop organizers helped to make this year a success and for there to be an increase in participation. This year CANCAS was also able to arrange a site for the Fall workshop before the Annual Meeting instead of mid-summer. Another accomplishment this year, was the nomination and ratification of a Co- Executive Director of CANCAS, Dr. Yuko Miyamoto of Elon University. This appointment will allow sufficient overlap of Co-Directors to allow continuity in programs.

Collegiate Academy Activities (continued) Fall Undergraduate Research Workshop, Fall 2005 The workshop was held at Elon University on November 5, 2005. Dr Jeffrey Coker hosted a spectacular meeting. We had 73 students and 26 faculty in attendance, totaling 99 participants. These individuals represented 14 institutions, although 4 were only represented by faculty speakers. This year’s workshop demonstrated a significant increase in attendance compared with 40 total participants representing 10 institutions in 2005. Highlights of the meeting included: • two tracks of presentations to meet the interests of a diverse group of undergraduates: one track took students through a chronological progression of the research process from getting involved in research to presenting results, the other track included a variety of topics to stimulate student interest in research • a presentation and round table discussion by CANCAS students to encourage and inform students about internships and other research opportunities • good food and fellowship on the lovely patio of the Elon science building

Future Fall Undergraduate Research Workshop, Fall 2006 The 2006 workshop will be held at East Carolina University on November 18, 2006.

Annual Meeting The Annual Meeting was held at Bennett College on March 24-26, 2006. A total of 139 students (compared to only 76 in 2005) representing 17 institutions from across the state registered for the meeting. Highlights of the meeting included the keynote address by Dr. Alan Feduccia on Bird Origins, a thought- provoking ethics panel discussion and a poster session in Steele Hall surrounded by artwork and jazz music.

Collegiate Academy Initiative & Accomplishments CANCAS has grown and improved its programs in several ways this year: • The first electronic version of the CANCAS Handbook with the recent revisions was posted on the CANCAS website to provide the membership with easy access to pertinent information. • Attendance increased at the Fall Undergraduate Workshop and the Annual Meeting • Arrangements for: a site for the Fall Undergraduate Research Workshop was completed months earlier than in recent years • The website is in the process of moving and will be undergoing revision along with the rest of the Academy’s website.
