hen Florida made the decision to expand the mission of the community college system to include four-year degree programs, many worried that the system’s core mission of providing Wworkforce education and two-year, vocationally ori- ented degrees would be compromised. Twelve years later, those fears have been allayed. The four-year degree programs, numbering 175 at 25 dif- ferent colleges (now rebranded as state colleges) have proved to be popular and well-suited for graduating high school seniors and older students. ...[A]cross Florida, state colleges are giving students the opportunity to improve their skills without the bur- den of crushing debt that so many university students shoulder as they receive their diplomas. Employers like the four-year college programs as well. Some col- leges have tailored degree programs to suit the needs of major employers in their areas. Even before Gov. Rick Scott issued his $10,000-degree challenge to state colleges in 2012, the four-year college programs repre- sented an excellent value for Florida students. Maybe a little too excellent. State Sen. Joe Negron seems to think so. Negron, Making space for chairman of the powerful Senate Budget Committee, is pushing legislation that would shut down the state Board of Education’s ability to green-light new four- year degree programs at state colleges. Instead, each more memories new degree would have to be approved by the state Legislature.
