V současné době se rod dělí na dvě sekce. V sekci Diffusae se rozlišují čtyři druhy L. alberto-vojtechii, L. diffusa, L. fricii, L. koehresii. Do sekce Lophophora se řadí jeden polymorfní druh L. williamsii. Takovéto systematické členění rodu je ale povětšinou ignorováno odbornou veřejností a v odborné literatuře se lze setkat s názory, že rod obsahuje jenom dva druhy, jižní typ – L. -

[Blank Page in Original Bulletin] Serious losses in sheep and goats as a result of grazing the ripe fruit of F_laurensia-cernua hm-kern observed on three ranches during the months of January and February. The characteristic pathological rlterations were inflammation, ulceration and perforation of the gastro- ' intestinal tract due to the presence ogsome intense irritant. In all cazes the animals had been subjected to cansiderable handling and were quite hungry when they gained access to the plant. When sheep and goats have continuous access to the plant and are not subjected to-handling during the winter months,there is no evidence that this p&k'of the ~lantis grazed in sufficient amounts to cause toxic effects. The plant has not been associated with similar losses in cattle. 1 The toxicity of the ripe fruit was demonstrated by experimental i feeding to sheep and goats. o In this wark a marked variation in the ~ueceptihility of different iddividuals was observed, as well as a nar- row margin between a sli$htly toxic andqethal dose of the material. Bowlin1,3 ABSTRACT.—We studied the mating system and flower visitors of 2 threatened species of Sclerocactus (Cactaceae) in the Uintah Basin of eastern Utah—an area undergoing rapid energy development. We found that both S. wetlandicus and S. brevispinus are predominantly outcrossed and are essentially self-incompatible. A third presumptive taxon (unde- scribed; here called S. wetlandicus-var1) is fully self-compatible but cannot produce seeds unless the flowers are visited by pollinators. -

Contents Yuccas in the Huntington Desert Garden Milieu The Weird and Wonderful Boojum Tree, Fouquieria columnaris, and its Relatives Curator’s Comments New Additions to the Huntington's Website and a Little Desert Collections History Yuccas in the Huntington Desert Garden Milieu by Gary Lyons, Curator of the Desert Garden The spiky-leaved yuccas are among the oldest plants in the Huntington landscape. Plantings dating back to 1908 and still thriving give the garden much of its character. Their bright festive panicles of white blossoms add a cheery background and accent to the symphony of spring color in the lower Desert Garden. According to the latest authorities there are 45 yucca species and 14 varieties and they are placed in the agave family. Most of the species are found in the Southwest, northern and central Mexico and Baja California. But the genus is more widespread with species found along the Atlantic seaboard, the Great Plains, into Canada, and south as far as Guatemala. Yucca blossoms, with the exception of at least one species (the rose-tinged Yucca endlichiana) are mostly creamy white.
