Winter Walks Programme 2016 / 2017 Winter 2016 - 2017 Walks Programme Message From The Chair Well, here I am writing one last introduction to our excellent Walks Programme. I often seem to mention the weather which can be so varied. It reminds me of a childhood rhyme that seems apt for Ramblers: We’ll weather the weather Whatever the weather Whether we like it or not Our new mid-week shorter walks have gone well enough for us to put them on permanently, so thanks to all walkers and leaders for supporting those. Our committee do spend time trying to accommodate the wishes of all our members and so building on the shorter midweek walks you will find more regular short morning walks at weekends as well and at a gentler pace! We genuinely welcome new walkers so please try us out! Our social programme is always varied and lively. All the details are in the Programme but there will be skittles in November, the Christmas Party in December and the Annual Dinner in March. Everyone is very welcome to these whether you’re a regular walker or not. A final thanks to all our walks leaders without whom this programme would not exist. Enjoy your walking with Tavistock Ramblers! Ian Gasper Chairman Winter 2016 - 2017 Walks Programme Message From The Walks Coordinator Once again a huge debt is owed to our dedicated band of walks leaders. They have come up trumps again so that we are able to present our best ever Winter Walks Programme in this, our 40 th Anniversary Year. It is all the more encouraging that we have no less than three leaders who have not lead walks for us before. We are always keen to encourage new leaders to provide the variety that is so important to appeal to our members. Could you be one of those next time? On the subject of variety, you will see that we are developing the theme of shortish walks at a leisurely pace. We hope that those members who prefer to take more time to enjoy their surroundings will not only come along but be encouraged to submit similar walks in the future. Inevitably walks have to be changed from time to time for various reasons. This may be due to the weather, footpath conditions, illness or other circumstances. Often this is something that can be dealt with on the day, for example rerouting part of the walk, or asking another leader to take the walk. Very occasionally, the problem may not be so easy to solve. If this is the case, can all leaders please remember: 1. To let me, as Walks Programme Coordinator, know (or in my absence, the Chairman) 2. Do not change the start time at Pixon Lane (as this leads to even more complications) Enjoy your walking. Rosemary Walks Guidance Notes We welcome all Ramblers members on our walks. Non -members are also welcome to join us on a walk or two before deciding to join Ramblers. Walks Meeting Points Our Group encourages car sharing and, other than the shorter weeekday and evening walks, we meet in Tavistock to share transport. The meeting point is the free car park in Pixon Lane, Tavistock PL19 9BB (just below the Market Inn) unless shown in the programme as “Meet at Start” Please note that we do leave the Tavistock meeting point promptly at the time stated. Those wishing to make their own way to the start point of the walk should check with the leader to confirm that there have been no changes in details. Drivers usually appreciate it when passengers make a voluntary contribution. As a guide, £1 to £4 according to distance travelled, is considered a reasonable amount to offer Those wishing to make their own way to the start point of the walk should check with the leader to confirm that there have been no changes in details. Safety Information Walks take place over ground that may be steep, uneven, slippery, muddy or rough and can involve climbing stiles and crossing streams. No liability is accepted by the leader or Tavistock Ramblers in respect of any personal loss, damage or injury that occurs on, or as a consequence of, any walk or event. Walkers should wear suitable footwear, bring clothing appropriate to the walk and weather conditions and adequate food and drink. The leader reserves the right to vary the route or cancel the walk to take account of weather or ground conditions. The leader also has the right to exclude from the walk anyone who is felt to be insufficiently fit or equipped for the planned walk. Walks Gradings The walks in this Walks Programme are graded in accordance with the Ramblers grading system. Easy - walks for anyone who does not have a mobility difficulty, a specific health problem or who is seriously unfit. Comfortable shoes or trainers can be worn. Leisurely - walks for reasonably fit people with at least a little country walking experience. The walk may include unsurfaced rural paths. Walking boots and warm, waterproof clothing are recommended. Moderate - walks for people with country walking experience and a good level of fitness. May include some steep paths and open country, and might be at a brisk pace. Walking boots and warm, waterproof clothing are essential. Strenuous - walks for experienced country walkers with an above average fitness level. May include hills and rough country, and may be at a brisk pace. Walking boots and warm, waterproof clothing are essential. The grades are indicated on the Walks Programme as follows: E Easy L Leisurely M Moderate S Strenuous Dogs Dogs are permitted on walks, except where specifically excluded, but on the clear understanding that they are under complete control at all times and on a lead where there is livestock. Please also note: Walk gradings are provided as a general guide only. If you have any doubt about your fitness for a particular walk please contact the organiser or leader in advance. • Bear in mind the distance of the walk, regional differences in terrain and the possibility of bad weather, which can make a walk more difficult than planned. • If you're unsure of your fitness level, try a short and easy walk first - it's much better to find a walk a little too slow and easy than to make yourself miserable and exhausted. • Leaders may refuse to accept participants who in their opinion are inadequately equipped or unfit. • Walks gradings relate to the difficulty or otherwise of the walk and not the length. A long walk, requiring a degree of stamina, can therefore, possibly be graded as Easy and you should take this into account ICE Cards All regular walkers who are members of Tavistock Ramblers have been given an ICE card. ICE (In Case of Emergency) cards have been purchased from group funds and are for the safety of members. They record identity, next of kin and medical information and should be clipped inside the rucksack (near the top for ease of finding in case of emergency). If you would like another one, perhaps if you have more than one rucksack in regular use or you have mislaid the first one, they are available from Rosemary for £2. Emergency SMS We have been advocating for a couple of years now that all members register their mobile phones with the SMS Emergency Service. Have you registered yours? Information on how to do it is elsewhere in this walks programme.
